Chapter 17

Alex's POV:

My heart stopped when I heard the gunshot. The next thing I knew I was seeing red. I attacked Niall with all I had. He just shot my mate, killed my pups, and was the reason I lost my first mate. This was all his fault, everything that's ever gone wrong was his fault! I lost control of Quill and for the first time, I didn't feel guilty about it. It took him two minutes to kill Niall, he didn't even get the chance to shift before I ripped him apart. I scratched until not even his bones were whole. Remains of Niall were scattered all over the room from my rampage, the rogues looked at me and soon Chaos erupted.

Niall's followers began attacking us but we had the advantage. We were a trained pack and three hundred rogues had nothing on the eight hundred fighters Jacob and I had gotten rounded up. As a fight broke out around me I grabbed Baila's shirt in my mouth just as a wolf lunged for me. It was either he smash into Baila or me. I closed my eyes, waiting for the pain to hit when a brown wolf came out of no where and killed the attacker. Seth. He shifted and quickly pulled on shorts while I did the same. When I did, I couldn't help but stare in shock.

"I didn't deserve her. You do, and I'm not about to let my mistake take that away from her or your kids. Now, lets get her out of here. I don't smell silver so her body might just be in shock."

"We need to get her to the pack doctor, there might be a chance she'll live. As for my pups, there's about a one in one million chance..." I mind linked Rachel to be prepared for our arrival as I scooped up Baila and together Seth and I ran to the pack hospital.

"Alex, what happened?" Rachel asked as we ran up. She already had a stretcher and everything set up for us.

"There was an attack, she got shot and the pups are gone." Rachel froze as my voice cracked.

"Gone?"

"The leader crushed them. It was either Baila or them and I chose them. Then, he shot Baila anyway." My wolf was still crying deep within my mind. Neither of us were doing well.

"Lay her down on the stretcher, we'll need to operate right away to get the bullet out of her chest. At least he hit her on the right side though, that doubles her chances of surviving this because he didn't hit her heart. A lung or ribs, a wolf can heal. Damage to the heart? Even without a silver bullet, it's hard to fix that."

"Do what you can."

Rachel wheeled Baila away and that's when I broke. I walked down an empty, dark hallway and just leaned against the wall with my head back. I felt weak as tears streamed down my face, I wasn't strong enough to save her. How did I just let my own pups and my mate die right in front of me and I was helpless to stop it? I punched the wall as hard as I could, leaving a huge crater in the cement. If Baila didn't make it, I'd be done. There will never be another girl like her. I'd have to give the pack to Jake and follow in the footsteps of all the other wolves who lost their mates. Life wasn't worth living if Baila wasn't there to live it with me.

"She's gonna make it, you know." I heard Seth say as he looked at me with pity.

"No she won't, you and I both know that won't happen. It's improbable." I said with my head in my hands.

"The thing with Baila though, she is the definition of imprbable. She always defeies the odds it's just who she is. She's also a hard core fighter, she'll go down swingin for something that she loves....or someone that she loves." He corrected himself.

"You think she pull through?" I asked bringing my head up and just staring at the wall.

"I don't think, I know. She loves you way too much to not come back to you."

"I'm sorry, by the way." He looked at me like I'd grown two heads.

"I remember from my first mate, it always sucked to see her with another guy. Your wolf wants nothing more than to kill him and take back what was yours originally. It almost drives you to the point of insanity if you don't control it." He nodded at me. He knew exactly what I was talking about. "Why did you save me? You could've just let that rogue kill me and take Baila to the hospital then when she recovered just gone ahead and married her, became Alpha, etc. Why didn't you?"

"She'd never forgive me." We both chuckled. "Plus, I see the way she looks at you. She clearly loves everything about you. It's obvious. The love and respect you two have for each other is something she'll never have with me. She loves and adores you to the ends of the earth and I know the feeling is mutual. I could never love Baila that way, it's just not my character and she needs that both mentally and physically. Everything you are, is everything I am not. In the end I did what was right for her." I nodded solemnly. He must of grown up because it takes a true man to do what he's done.

"Thanks," Seth just nodded.

"Now, should we go check on the status of your mate?" He changed subjects with a smirk, like he knew something.

"What do you know that I don't?"

"Well, while you were having a pity party for yourself in an empty hallway, your mate came out of surgery and is wide awake asking for you."

"I've only been here for a few moments."

"No man, you've been sitting here for a few hours. Now c'mon, get off your ass and lets go."

He held out a hand for me and I took it without hesitation. I couldn't help but smile at this change. I never thought my mate's ex-mate would be telling me to pick myself up in the hospital on my territory. Somethings just work out funny that way don't they? Weird... As he pulled me up I couldn't help but grab his arm as he was walking away.

"Artemis would be stupid to not give you a second chance for all you've done. You know that right?" He turned to me with a smile

"I like to think so. In all honesty though, going to take this day by day." I nodded. Fair enough. With that we walked into the lobby and through the doors to my mates room. My breath left me as soon as I walked in.
