《Peter And Wendy》Epilogue

Wendy Darling sat in her new room at her new home. She was about to go to sleep and trying not to think about the old house. That old place and all the adventures she had had.
Her mother opened Wendy's door and peeked her head through. "Are you going to sleep, Darling?"
Wendy turned her head and smiled, "Yes. I just have to unpack my blankets."
Her mother took a few steps to Wendy's bed and sat down beside her. "Are you okay, honey?"
Wendy shrugged. She wrapped her arms around her mother's waist and leaned against her chest. Mrs. Darling put her arm around Wendy's shoulder. "It's okay, my love. I know it's hard."
Wendy nodded, squeezed her arms and let go of Mrs. Darling. She scooted over to the side of her bed and stepped off. She walked over to the boxes on the other side of the room. She opened the box in the corner and pulled out a few blankets from the top. Mrs. Darling took the blankets from Wendy's hands and spread them across her bed.
Wendy lifted up one corner of the blanket and settled under it. Mrs. Darling leaned across the bed and kissed Wendy on the forehead.
"Goodnight, my Darling. I will see you in the morning." Mrs. Darling smiled softly and blew out the lamp before walking out of the room.
Wendy turned on her side and stared out the frost covered window.
Even though she was trying to forget her old home, a wave of nostalgia washed over her and a few tears escaped from her eyes.
As Wendy was about to fall asleep, she heard a large thump against her window. She immediately opened her eyes and jumped out of bed.
This could be it. Was all that was rushing around her head in the few exhilarating moments that lead up to opening the window, for she never once thought that Peter would abandon her, not once.
Her night gown billowed behind her when the cold air rushed through the room. A bright light, which must've been the thump, fell onto the floor.

The room was filled with a strange tinkling, which Wendy had almost forgotten.
Wendy bent down closer to the light and squinted her eyes. She gasped suddenly. "Tinkerbell?"
The tinkling stopped. The tiny fairy flew off the ground before Wendy could blink her eyes again.
Tinkerbell flitted around Wendy, inspecting every angle, she wondered if this was the Wendy-bird she had tried to shoot down all those years ago.
Then the fairy stopped at a point on Wendy's chest. Wendy glanced down.
They both spotted the giveaway at the same moment.
Peter's kiss.
A victorious shriek filled the silent air and Tinkerbell flew out the window.
Wendy raced after her, but she was too late. Her last chance is gone.
Wendy slowly closed the window, staring at a certain star the entire time. The star lit up as she locked the window. Wendy smiled the tiniest bit before going back to bed.

Wendy slept soundly as a strange boy and a bright light tried to open the window.
It was different from the window before, but the two were managing.
Just as the boy had almost lifted the lock, Tinkerbell slipped off the window ledge and hit the window, just like before.
Wendy immediately sat up in her bed and turned her head to the window.
The boy was too startled to move. But Wendy wasn't hesitant at all. She jumped off the bed, her blankets following her and she almost tripped. The boy's eyes widened just a hair.
Wendy stood before the window for a few moments before throwing it open. The boy and the bright light fell onto the floor before Wendy. She stared down at them while the happiest of tears filled her eyes.
"Peter," she whispered.
Peter lifted his head and smiled weakly at Wendy before he picked himself up off the floor, literally, and set his hands on each hip.
Wendy closed the gap between the two of them and hugged Peter tightly. The tears slipped from her eyes. Peter glanced down at her. "Wendy? Are you alright?"

Wendy nodded. She wiped her eyes and stepped back from Peter. "You found me," Wendy whispered, her voice thick with joy and tears.
"Of course I did, Wendy! Did you think I would let you move, having not seen you again?" Peter asked, his grin widening.
Wendy sat down on the floor, cross legged. She beckoned Peter to sit next to her. He did, of course he did.
"You wanted to know what was happening in Neverland?" Peter asked.
Wendy nodded vigorously. "Yes, yes!"
Peter chuckled. "Okay, calm down."
Wendy leaned her back against the backboard of her bed and stared in admiration at Peter while he excitedly explained all the things she had missed while not in Neverland.
As Peter finished his tales, the sun was just coming up over the horizon and Wendy realized how tired she is.
"Peter," she whispered hesitantly.
"Yes Wendy?" His eyes were following Tinkerbell, who was flying around Wendy's room, examining every surface.
"It is almost morning."
"Is it?"
Wendy took a deep breath. "I think you should maybe go soon."
Peter's eyes met hers in a split second. "What?"
"I wish you could never leave, Peter. But it is almost time for my family to be waking up! I do not want you to be discovered, Peter."
Peter lifted up into the air without realizing, his expression wild. "I have spent ages trying to find you Wendy Darling. And you want me to leave so soon?"
Wendy stares up at him, horrified. "It's not like that Peter! I want you to stay! I really do. But you can not! I am sorry." Her eyes filled with tears for what she thought is the millionth time that night.
"Wendy. Come with me back to Neverland. Please. I miss you all the time. I can't stand not seeing you!" Peter's own eyes were shining. But Wendy couldn't tell if it was tears or not.
"Peter.."
"Wendy, please."
"Peter I can't."
Silence filled the room. The girl and boy not meeting each other's eyes.
"Why not, Wendy?"
"I can't fly anymore, Peter, I have tried so many times. I have thought so many happy thoughts and I have never once been able to get off the floor."
"You just need Pixie Dust. Tink!" Peter mumbled incoherent words as he searched for the fairy.
Tinkerbell flew out from Wendy's closet and landed on Peter's shoulder. Peter lifted her up and sprinkled dust over Wendy.
They wait what seemed like hours, but is really only minutes. And Wendy never left the ground.
Peter's face was streaked with tears as he realized what this meant.
"We can find a way around this though! I can just carry you to Neverland! You can come with me Wendy and we will live there happily, forever!"
"Peter, you know it can't work."
Peter turned his back on Wendy and crossed his arms.
"Peter. Please look at me." Wendy tapped on Peter's shoulder and tried to turn him to face her. After a while he faced her and he pulled her against him.
They stood there. Hugging. Until the sun was almost completely risen.
"I have to leave don't I?" Peter mumbled through the fabric of Wendy's nightgown.
"I think so," Wendy whispered.
Peter pulled away from Wendy. "I want you to promise me something Wendy-Bird."
"Anything, Peter, anything."
"Will you keep telling stories?"
"There is no one to tell the stories to, Peter."
"You can write them down until there's someone to tell them to."
"Okay. I promise."
"And one more thing."
"Yes?"
"Don't forget me."
Wendy wiped her tears away, she smiled as brightly as she can. "Me? Forget? Never."
And Peter smiled, too.
