《Gone》Chapter 2- Why

They left him alone after that. Leaving the cell shortly after Roman's demand. Virgil sat alone, his eyes closed as he leaned back and tried to figure out what he was going on and what to do.
They didn't know who he was. So for now that was good.
Logan was smarter than the other two and Patton was kinder. Virgil didn't like Roman. Then again he wasn't supposed to. Virgil and Roman were enemies. Virgil knew that, so far Roman didn't.
It worked in his favor, them not knowing who he was. Names were powerful things, a name could do a lot. Especially if someone had magic, Virgil didn't have enough to do anything harmful with their names. And even if he did he'd have to talk to do the spell which was a strict no. But Logan had magic, and Virgil had no idea how strong he was. So not giving them his name was smart. Not to mention that if they knew his name they would know he was a prince. Or more accurately The Prince. The prince of the DarkRealm. And if they did the attack than... Virgil didn't know what would happen. He didn't want to think about it either.
Hours passed. Virgil was left alone with only his thoughts to accompany him, and they were terrible thoughts. What if Dee was dead? What if they had caught his father as well? What if they were hurting Remus, he'd be considered a traitor to the Light Realm. What if the Light Realm didn't do it? What if Virgil failed?
He tried to muffle his thoughts by doing other things. He tapped his feet and drummed his fingers to a song in his head. He counted the number of cement tiles on the ground. He took the rope that had been tied to his hands and made string figures like Cats Cradle. He even practiced a little magic and singed his cloak, but he didn't do that for long. He didn't want to get caught.
After the fifth or sixth hour, the sound of the door opening caught his attention. Virgil turned to it, his fingers still entangled in the rope as Logan walked in with a bowl and Virgil's bag in hand. "Good evening Ann. The King and Prince Roman wanted me to ask you a few more questions. I have also brought you food as we weren't aware of when you last ate"
Yesterday at lunch, Virgil hadn't eaten dinner because of an anxiety attack and there hadn't been an opportunity to eat before this. Virgil looked back at his hands and dropped two of his fingers, the rope fell and Virgil turned back to Logan, who watched him curiously.
"I will let you eat, and maybe you might be able to answer my questions" Logan pushed the bowl through a small opening in the bars. Virgil looked at the food warily, still sitting in his corner. "There is nothing in the food, it is perfectly safe"
Virgil pointed at Logan and then the food, there was no point in using real sign language if they didn't understand it. "You would like me to try?" Logan asked Virgil nodded. "Very well then, if it'll make you feel more comfortable" Logan took the food back and took a bite, Virgil watched him chew and swallow before Logan slid the food back one more time. Virgil waited for two minutes, watching for any sign that the food had been tampered with before he finally moved towards it.
Logan took a seat in front of Virgil, the bars separating them. Virgil looked at the food, examining it one more time before taking a careful bite. "As you can see there is no reason to fear the meal," Logan said, Virgil hesitated on his second bite, "Roman said you were carrying this bag with you this morning" Logan held up Virgil's satchel and watched him nod slowly. "I have gone through your things, you had hastily packed items for a trip, correct?" Virgil nodded again. Logan pulled two books out of the bag, "you practice magic?"

Virgil froze than nodded slowly. "You are a novice though, here in the Light Realm someone your age would be far past these spells. Is that true in the Dark Realm as well?" Virgil only looked at his food, it gave Logan the answer he needed. "Do you struggle with magic Ann?" He nodded again, it was better, to tell the truth, and have them know he was weak than for him to lie and have them think he's a bigger threat than he is. If they think he's weak it'll be easier to get out.
"You come from a family that is well off," Logan said, "I can tell that much from how nice the items you carry are, and the clothes you wear would signify nobility if they weren't so torn." Virgil didn't give any type of reply and Logan asked another question, "Are you close to the royal family Ann"
Virgil looked at Logan, their eyes locking for a long and silent moment before Logan looked away. Virgil fought back a smile and Logan remained clueless as to Virgil's relationship with the royal family. "Have you ever met the royal family?" Logan asked. Virgil nodded, his family had met every noble person of blood it would be odd if he said no. Plus, he wasn't lying. "Did they send you here?" Virgil shook his head, Remus had sent him away but they didn't send him here.
Logan watched Virgil put his bowl down, signifying he was finished. He handed Virgil a notepad and pen, it was the same one as last time. Virgil took it warily. "How long were you running?" he asked Virgil.
Virgil looked down at the notepad as he wrote, 'All night.' He showed the paper to Logan.
"Just one night?" he asked, Virgil nodded, "You must have been in close proximity to the border if you only had to run for one night.
'I'm a fast runner.' Virgil wrote, 'And I didn't stop'
"Were there others with you?" Logan asked. Virgil shook his head, no, but he wished there had been. He wished Dee or even Remus had been with him. If they had been with him then maybe he wouldn't have gotten stuck here, and maybe they'd have been able to stop the soldiers. If they had been with him he wouldn't be feeling so useless. "Why were you running?"
Virgil stopped, he tried to give the notepad back but Logan pushed it back, "I can not and will not leave until I know why you were running."
Virgil glared, 'You should know.'
"That is not a clear answer Ann, why were you running?" Virgil dropped the notepad before going back to the corner he sat in. "Ann, I need you to answer my question." Virgil picked up the rope again, ignoring Logan as he formed the string to look like a spiderweb. Logan watched him carefully. Virgil's eyes showed anger, his fingers were carefully bending and folding and moving as they dropped the form of the spider-web and made a new figure.
They sat in silence for an hour, Logan would carefully watch Virgil for any sign of an answer and Virgil continued to play with the rope. "Ann, are you going to answer my question?"
Virgil shook his head.
"Very well then," Logan said before he stood up, taking everything except the notepad and pencil with him."You are more stubborn than I originally assumed" He looked back at Virgil one more time, but the boy continued to look at his fingers. Logan nodded before leaving the room. He entered the room Roman and Patton was in a few minutes later. Ann's satchel still in his hands as his two friends turned to him.

"Did he say anything?" Roman asked
"He never said a word to me however he did answer many of the questions." Logan said as he sat down across from Roman, "He claims he was alone, and the trip only took him one night. He confirmed he is noble, but I am unaware of any relationship he may have with the royal family. He does practice magic, but it doesn't seem he's very good at it."
"And why was the kiddo running?"
Logan shook his head, "He wouldn't tell me. All he wrote down was that we should know why, but I can not recall any reason we may have given the Dark Realm to feel the need to flee"
"That's because we haven't," Roman said, "We haven't had any Light Realm soldiers leave our territory in over four months. If he was running, it wasn't because of us" Logan and Patton nodded in understanding, all silently wondering what they were gonna do with the boy downstairs.
Virgil was still asleep when the three boys entered the room with the cell again. He was turned towards the wall, his body looking smaller than it really was as he curled up slightly. His breathing came out slow and even, his eyes moved under his eyelids as a dream took place. His hair, which was dyed purple, hung in front of his face. "He's a lot calmer asleep" Roman said as Patton opened the door to the cell, a new plan in mind, "Come on guy's, I don't know how long it's gonna take for my parents to take control of the situation"
Patton nodded, kneeling next to the sleeping boy and placing a hand on his shoulder, "Ann," Patton said as he gently tried shaking Virgil awake, "Ann wake-" Virgil shot upward, grabbing Patton's wrist as he spun to face him. Logan and Roman took a step forward "Morning kiddo, how are you feeling?" Patton said with a large smile.
Virgil looked at Patton, staring at the other boy's smile before dropping his wrist 'Don't touch' he signed to them. The three Light Realm boys looked at each other again.
"What would you like us to not do Ann?" Logan asked him, the night before he had taken the time to learn some sign language but he was far from fluent, obviously. Virgil hesitated before slowly putting a hand on Patton's shoulder, he looked to see if the others understood before quickly pulling back.
"No touching. Got it kiddo no problem." Patton said and moved backward from Virgil so he would feel safer. It didn't do much, "We brought you some breakfast." Patton pushed a plate of bacon and eggs towards him.
Virgil looked down at it then back at the three boy's 'Water' he signed to them.
That was one Logan understood, "I'll be back, he is requesting water" Logan said before going towards the door.
Patton picked up the notepad and pen from where it had been left the night before and put it next to the plate, "Can we ask you a few more questions, Ann? You can answer while you eat if you want"
Virgil looked at the food, it looked normal, and it had been fine yesterday. Virgil looked at Roman, before nodding. "Alright Ann first, and we should probably have asked this earlier, but are you hurt?" Roman asked him. Virgil shook his head as Patton handed him the plate of food. "Okay, that's good I guess. Are you scared of us?" Virgil nodded. "Why?" Roman asked. Virgil looked at the two of them. He put the plate down and picked up the notepad.
'You attacked' He wrote.
"I thought you had been sent to hurt my kingdom," Roman replied. Virgil glared, he was about to write down that he didn't mean attacking him in the woods. He meant attacking them in general but stopped and instead put the pen down. "Are you still scared of us?" Virgil nodded
"Kiddo, we're not gonna hurt you. But we need to know why you're here" Patton said, they reached a hand towards Virgil, and almost immediately Virgil pushed himself back against the wall.
"Patton," Logan said as he came back into the room, closing the door behind him and walking into the cell, "I thought it was made clear he doesn't want to be touched"
Patton pulled their hand back, "Oops, sorry kiddo. I like hugs"
Virgil nodded once but didn't come any farther away from the wall. Logan handed him a darkly colored canteen, and after doing the best he could to make sure it was water he took a long sip. He ignored how the three boys watched him drink. "Are you done, Ann?" Logan asked him. Virgil nodded but didn't give the canteen back. "Can we continue asking questions?"
Virgil picked up the notepad again, 'You need to let me go'
"Trust me, we'd love to, but until we know you're not gonna put the Light Realm in danger we can't," Roman told him
"The sooner you answer all our questions the sooner we can let you go," One of the others said, "That means telling us why you were running"
'I'm not telling you something you already know the answer to'
Roman glared at him, "Listen Emo if your silence puts my kingdom in danger than I promise you'll regret it" Roman said, before reaching for him and pulling him to his feet. "I'm not gonna- what's wrong with you?"
Virgil had frozen in Roman's grasp. His normally blue eyes had turned a magnificent purple, he began shaking in the others hand and the other two boys jumped forward. "He must be a seer, he's having a vision," Logan said as he took Romans hand away from Virgil's arm. "They're not normally this long. He must be trying to control it." He said, placing Virgil back on the cot.
"Lo will he be okay?"
"As long as he doesn't strain himself, yes" Logan replied. A second after he finished speaking Virgil gasped, his eyes returning to their normal color before he lunged at the notepad on the floor, startling the other three boys. He was frantic to get the words onto the paper before shoving them into Roman's hands.

Macabre Mim
*Note: This story is on hiatus. I intend to pick it up again, but the mood of my life has shifted for the time being and I'm going to be working on a side project for a bit.* What would you give to live the life of your dreams? What kind of deal would you make? And when you were there, forced to stare your dreams in the eye and live them every day, how long would it be... before they broke you? Author's note: This is my first excursion outside the realm of villain fan fiction and I welcome feedback. The thing I've loved most about RRL so far is the potential for writing to be an interactive experience with excited readers. That said, also, the primary genre this is intended for is the blossoming realm of LitRPG. Namely, a slice of life tale in the manner of Grimgar or Re:Zero. So, likewise, I don't expect there will ever be a clear beginning-middle-and-end type of pattern to this story. It will likewise always be a bit more of a reactionary, exploratory novel into realms unknown - much like the 1800 travel-novel theme used by Jules Verne. Or, at least, that is my ambition.
