《Throwin' It Back》21.) Waking Up

My eyes fluttered open, and the first thing I saw was white. Slowly, the sound of beeping machines filled my ears, and once the feeling came back in my hands, I noticed I was gripping something tightly. I let out a deep breath and slowly turned my head to the side, only to see Axel, my Axel from my generation, sleeping in the chair beside my hospital bed. He looked exhausted, and his hand was what I was gripping, yet he was still the most handsome guy I had ever seen. I glanced around the rest of the room, seeing millions of flowers and balloons, before I looked at him again and squeezed his hand.

"Axel..." I whispered, my voice scratchy, and he shifted before his eyes opened. When they finally landed on me, a huge grin broke out on his face, and his eyes filled with tears.

"Michelle!" He stood from the chair and wrapped his arms around me. I slowly lifted my arms and wrapped them around his neck, holding him as tightly as I could. I buried my head in his shoulder and smiled. He held me a little longer before he pulled back and pressed a gentle kiss against my cheek. "I'm so sorry, baby. I'm sorry for everything."

"It's okay, Axel. What matters now is that you're here with me."

He pulled away, and I could see tears trickling down his face. He sat on the edge of my bed and I wiped away his tears, smiling gently at him. He held my hand in his and smiled back. "The doctors weren't sure if you would make it. They said there was a small chance, and knowing that I could have really lost you... I couldn't live with that. It's not okay, Chelle. I wasn't good to you like I should have been. I'm sorry for hurting you."

"I don't want to think about that stuff, baby." I gripped his hand and smiled. "I just need to hear you say you love me. Tell me those words and we'll be okay."

He let out a chocked laugh and leaned closer to me. "I love you so much, Michelle Hawley, and I always will."

"I love you too, Axel. No matter what happens, I'll always love you." I wrapped my arms around his neck again and pulled him to me, crashing my lips into his. Axel's arms wrapped around my waist, and I smiled through the kiss. I was back. Axel was here, and everything was okay. We were okay, and we were happy.

When we pulled away, the doctors walked in. Axel sat back in his chair, but he never let go of my hand. The doctors ran some tests, and took some of the cords hooked up to the machines off of me, and then they went to discuss what they were going to do with me next. While they were gone, I glanced at Axel and smiled.

He grinned back, his thumb absentmindedly stroking my hand. "What is it?"

"You would not believe the dream I had in that coma." I mused, and he nodded, motioning for me to go on. So, I told him the whole story. From waking up in a different generation, to fifties Axel leaving for war, and the whole time, he had the biggest grin on his face. When I was finished, he pressed a gentle kiss to my hand, his smile growing bigger.

"I wondered why you kept saying my name in your coma." He replied, and we busted out laughing. The doctors came back in and smiled at us before the main doctor handed Axel papers.

"Everything looks good. You'll have to be on crutches for a while, and your arm will have a cast, but other than that, you should be able to go tomorrow." The doctor smiled at me. "You're very lucky, Miss. Hawley. If it wasn't for this man calling the ambulance as soon as it happened, you might not be here today."

The doctor smiled at us once more before he left. I motioned for Axel to sit beside me on the bed, and he slowly sat down, wrapping his arm around my waist. I leaned my head on his shoulder and threw my arm over his stomach, letting out a content sigh.

"I missed you so much, Axel."

"I missed you too, baby."

I glanced up at him and smiled, "And I love you. I love you so much."

He smiled back, pressing a gentle kiss against my temple. "I love you too, Michelle. I always have, and I always will. No matter what."

As I laid in that hospital bed with my Axel, I realized just how tough love was. You had fights, you broke each other's hearts, but you could always make up, and you could always fix anything broken. Love was unconditional. Sure, love could be tragic. It could kill you, it could break you, but most of all, love was a beautiful thing. It gave you this out of world feeling that could never be achieved by any other feeling, and to be loved so greatly by someone was the best thing you could have in this damaged world.

And if this was what it felt like to be in love with Axel McCarthy, whether we threw it back to the fifties generation or lived in the 21st century, then this was the way I wanted to feel forever.

He was my one true love through every generation, and love like that can't be changed, no matter what. I love you, Axel McCarthy. For Yesterday, today, and forever.
