《One For Three》02 - Raffle, Wish, and Regret

'His office is such a drab,' thought Vera as they entered the room. She gave a stink eye towards the boring set up of the room. 'It could use some decorations.'
"Ms. Vera, please take a seat," said Crispin. She took notice of the plain white cover of the chair, 'so tasteless.'
She looked at the eyes of Crispin, and cut to the chase. "Can you explain what is happening? Like, in full detail?"
"Well," started Crispin. "Let me tell you about Afterlife first.
"Many creatures exist across the universe, from humans, elves, dwarves, even giant humanoids in the shape of what you know as ants. Do you follow?"
Vera nodded, thanking Leo as he gave her a cup of coffee. Crispin sipped his chocolate milk and continued.
"Those creatures, including yours, have different beliefs. That is evident even in your world with only one rational race, am I right?"
She nodded once again, thinking about the different religions that she knew about.
"Now, the Afterlife is a place where recently deceased souls are sorted. You can say that it is much like a reception hall, where souls are directed towards there destination.
"Their destinations, of course, are determined by how they lived their life. However, the standards of how they get to paradise or abyss, as well as the shape and form of those depend on their beliefs.
"Normally, souls will form lines on the counter and go to rooms where they'll get to their destination."
Vera remembered the alien who went splat. 'So that's their belief of an afterlife? They explode, like literally?' Her face went green. Crispin did not notice it and still continued.
"However, one Earth year ago, the Great One wanted to have a raffle for 7 lucky souls, so we assigned numbers for each soul in order of their arrival. You're quite the lucky one, he chose that number of yours."
"That's also why you're here and not there!" Bassie remarked.
"Also, that's why you've had us fetch you from the room. Normally, souls just wake up with a map and their profile on a paper." said Leo.

"Wait," Vera processed everything that she has heard. "I am dead?"
"Yes," replied Crispin.
"But how? I don't remember dying."
"Take a look at the paper given to you earlier. Your cause of death is listed there, as well as other necessary information."
Vera remembered the paper she was given a while ago. She took it out from her pocket and sought for the cause of death.
Date of Death: May 17, XXXX
Cause of Death: Drowning
Destination: %¥|>{€|}{^
"I drowned?" uttered Vera as she tried her best to remember what happened. After a few minutes, she gave up. "I can't remember anything!"
"That's fine," said Crispin. "Most creatures do not remember how they died, after all."
'Something really bothers me about how I died,' thought Vera, but she shrugged it off. Strangely, she accepted her death quite easily.
"Now," she changed the topic, "what is that raffle you are talking about?"
"Let me ask you a question first. Do you have one wish; one wish that you're willing to do anything for it?" asked Crispin.
Vera's eyes grew distant as she remembered one regret that she had.
---
Vera is a brat. Anyone can attest to that. She's snobby, immature, whiny. She also was her parent's favorite child. However, she had one soft spot in her heart for her younger sister.
"Crap, I have to go now," said Vera as she remembered the promise she made to her sister. "Cover for me, will you?"
"Fine, fine. Go away," said her colleague. She hurriedly went outside the building, but she fainted.
She woke up at the hospital. She saw her parents frantically speaking at the doctor. Her eyes sought her sister, but she wasn't present there.
"It was nothing serious," said the doctor. "She just needed some rest."
Vera didn't care about that. 'Where is my sister?' thought Vera.
Her sister was waiting for her at the contest she just won. Her sister thought that everyone, even Vera, forgot about her. That day, Vera and her sister became distant, which broke Vera's heart.

A tear slipped from Vera's eyes.
"I take that as a yes," said Crispin.
"You are lucky!" said Bassie.
"You just won one wish, " said Leo.
She tried to focus on other things. 'I sense a but here,' thought Vera.
"But there's a catch!" Bassie was squirming from excitement.
'Called it.'
"You have to do something first. We can't tell you unless you affirm it first," finished Crispin.
"Are you up for this? We can just send you to your destination, you know, if you don't want to."
'That sounds promising.' Vera thought for a moment.
"Be warned, however, that the Great One will be displeased."
"He can make your life a living hell," said Bassie. "Wait, you're dead already! Then a dying hell? Perhaps a dead hell? No, that does not sound right..."
That surprised Vera. She realized, 'The Great One must be the creator, or something of that extent.'
"May I ask something first? You've said that there are 7 souls that will be eligible for this." Crispin nodded at both of the questions.
"How many have won before me?"
"There were two souls that have won the raffle before you." said Leo. Bassie's eyes lit up from excitement.
"Yes, I remember them!"
"Can you tell what happened to them?"
Bassie looked up, trying to remember them. Her eyes widened in recognition.
"Ah! The first one won around 10 Earth months ago, I guess? I don't remember what he did, but he succeeded."
Leo snickered. "The first one? He actually wished to be back in his world, in his body. Sadly, he worded it poorly and found himself six feet under. He was back in Afterlife once more after a few minutes."
'What the? He must be so stupid or careless. Or both.'
"As for the second one, he's still finishing his task." Leo stood up, and said, "Let me get the screen for his room first."
"Hmmm," Bassie was looking up, tapping her undex fingers on her chin. "I think his task was to finish a women's gymnastics routine, full costume and all? That one performed by Katelyn Ohashi from Planet Earth on January 12, 2019?"
'A male performing a gymnastics routine? Even if I don't recognize this Katelyn, this is going to be hard for him.'
"Yeah, that's the one Bassie," said Leo as he gave her the screen for the man's room.
Her eyes widened at what she saw. In the room, there was a huge man practicing splits, tears forming beneath his eyes.
'What the hell?' Then she guffawed. 'He's a body builder!'
The man's body was NOT suited for gymnastics, especially with the costume. Crispin and the twins just stared at her.
'What's their problem? This is so funny!' She took a deep breath and composed herself.
'It shouldn't be that bad. Plus, I can finally end that regret of mine.'
"I accept."
Bassie gave her a thumbs-up." That's great!" Vera ignored her.
"Very well," said Crispin. "As selected by the god of random, Randell, your soul will be sent in three different worlds. In those worlds, you will play a role there, but in the end, you must grant a selected person's wish."
"So I must play fairy godmother first before I can get to be Cinderella, huh?" mumbled Vera. The twins just looked at her blankly.
"You can say that. Furthermore, the failure to fulfill their wish will add two more worlds to your quota. Is it clear?"
Vera pondered upon it. "Would I get any background knowledge about the world or the person assigned?"
"Don't worry about the world, you'll be a human or somewhat identical to a human, like an elf. However, no information will be given for the person. You'll gain the ability to hear the wish, though. You just have to determine who that is."
Vera took a deep breath. "Okay, fine. When do I start?"
"Tomorrow."

Beast
A threat to the galaxy has come from another, and the Union of intelligent life will go to any length to stop it. Military Quarantine has held for hundreds of thousands of cycles. Traders, merchants, colonists, and Pirates live risky lives along the fringes as the politics from the inner systems fail to see the larger threats beyond their borders. A lone human finds himself far from home with no memories to how he arrived. A failing Trade vessel plays on a desperate gamble, while a malicious parasite searches for a suitable host. ............................................. Author's note: Beast is a story that I wrote a long, long time ago. Some of you might have read it then, back when it was posted on reddit over at r/HFY. It was my first webfiction and made in the spirit of that subreddit's "genre" of humanity being awesome. But, it is also a story that has bothered me a little bit. Just like most new writers tend to do, I made mistakes and errors that feel painful to reread. A Space Opera will be a Space Opera, but I had prose that makes present-me cringe. Still, at the same time, the story is still very much a tale I've never given up on. It was my first adventure into fiction: Beast was a crazy adventure with bodysnatching aliens, galactic war, threats from across the universe... Posting this story here is a way to try and redeem myself a bit. I won't call it a complete rewrite, because it's not, but I have wanted to go through and correct some of the major issues Beast has for a long time and put it somewhere more accessible to read (instead of as posts/comments on reddit) and I figure that now is as good a time as any. Additional corrections you might notice are welcome.

Captain Critiques: A Grumpy Pirate Review Book
(CURRENTLY OPEN)When it comes to reviews, I'm probably as harsh as the hellhole most story ideas crawl out of. I'm blunt, sarcasic, to the point and I know what I like in a story. As you can probably guess, you don't wanna take my advice if your like an overprotective mother about your story. Who am I kidding, EVERYONE is like that about their stories. But, if you could find the courage to pry the story out of your cold, crabby hands so I can give my brutally honest opinion then be my guest. Just don't try and start a fight once I provide it. You DON'T wanna fight a pirate. .................................. I reserve the right to decline stories as this will be taking up quite a bit of my time and if I say no, I mean NO. If your blurb is unreadable I will decline it. If it includes the genres mentioned in my 'Hell No' section then I will send it back where it came from.Do NOT critique the Captain.
