《Between Two Worlds (Aizawa x Reader)》Chapter Sixty-Three: Out of Time

The second day went as fast as it came. I thought the day would go by excruciatingly slow, where the minutes felt like hours, and hours felt like centuries.
I mean, it's how I felt every time I was at work. Well, back in my world, that is. But instead, it felt like I didn't have a grip on time at all here. It seemed to slip by every time I checked the clock.
I never was able to get back into my world the night before once I woke up. Everything was blank. The anxiety of not knowing how the test went was driving me nuts, and putting me even more on edge. Not only that, but I could feel myself dragging when the nights went on like this, and moreso than what I was used to. It felt like an extra weight was added to my body with every night I didn't make it back to my world. I couldn't help but wonder how this was effecting my body here, and back home.
Was the fatigue connected to my inability to return home?
Was I slowly losing it?
What happens when I can no longer write checks my body can't cash?
Would I cease to exist here?
What about in my world?
"...Miss Doe?" I heard All Might say. I instantly came out of the mental fog that had it's hold on me for most of the day.
"Sorry? What?" I said, blinking quickly as I tried my best to seem less oblivious.
"Are you alright?" he asked, his sunken eyes looking worried as he furrowed his brows.
"Y-yeah, I'm fine." I said with a slight chuckle, "I'm sorry, I didn't think I had zoned out for that long."
"You've been relatively quiet most of the day. Are you sure you don't need anything?" he asked, "I can get you some more tea, or-"
"No, no. I'm fine. Just a little tired is all." I said as I took my already empty cup to the sink. Right as I got to the counter and turned the water on, my vision started to blur. I blinked a few times and rubbed my eyes, momentarily helping the blurriness. But just as I began to feel a tad better, I started to feel a numbing and tingling sensation in my arms and legs. As I began to look down at my limbs, the room began to spin, and the blurriness started to ramp back up.
I could vaguely hear All Might's voice as my world started to slow down. Before I knew it, my eyes began to roll back into my head as I fell backwards.
Last thing I could somewhat recall was the feeling of All Might catching me before I hit the ground as I passed out.
...
"...Results..."
...
"...inconclusive?"
...W-what?
"In the event...need to..."
I...can't hear them clearly.
"...standard procedure regarding advance directives and her power of attorney."
Wait...Did I fail?
"We'll run more...tests...before..."
No. No! Everything's fading out! I need to hear what they're saying!
...
"...No, no. Don't do that." I heard off in the distance. The voice notably different than the doctors I heard moments before, "You have a job to do. Let me do mine."

I slowly opened my eyes as I began to re-enter this world from mine. I could barely see anything in the darkness. The only light that remained was coming from outside the door that was slightly ajar.
'What time is it?' I thought as I shifted myself to get up.
As I sat up, I immediately felt unbelievably exhausted. My body felt like it could use 100 years worth of sleep, I felt so deprived. You would think I'd feel better if I had been out for some time, but for some reason, I wasn't.
"Has this happened before?" I heard from outside the room. It was All Might, who sounded like he was downstairs, "Did Nezu warn you about something like this occurring?"
Despite my body begging to stay still and relax, I somehow managed to get up and move closer to the door to listen in.
"That's a little reassuring. We at least have some insight as to what might have caused this...," he said, "...She's currently upstairs, resting."
Was he talking to Aizawa?
"...Yes. You stay with the students and let me worry about her. There's nothing more you can do as of now." I heard him say calmly.
'Guess that answers that question.' I thought to myself.
"...Of course." I heard All Might say one last time before there was nothing but silence filling the room.
I quietly tip toed back to the bed, and let out a sigh as I plopped back down onto the mattress.
I checked my phone to check the time.
2:10am.
'Jesus! I've been out for the last 8 hours.' I thought as I sighed and fell back into the pillow.
It's been that long since I've been out, and I still felt like I had been running on empty fumes.
'What the Hell is happening to me?' I thought as my body tried to fight off the stress that was slowly sinking in, 'I feel like I'm running out of time.'
The next morning came, and the realization that the third and final day of the training camp was here made the pit of my stomach drop. The best I could equate this feeling to was going into a big exam you needed to pass in order to graduate and knowing you didn't study enough. Or being called into the office by the GM and not knowing why.
In other words: It was terrifying and you knew the outcome was likely not going to be good.
But I knew I couldn't let anyone know something was wrong. If anyone got a whiff that something was about to go down, the timeline would potentially be fucked up beyond repair.
I was thankful All Might was able to keep Aizawa at the camp last night, rather than come all the way back to check on me. Despite how much I missed him, he needed to stay put. Last thing I needed was another wrench thrown in.
All Might had spent most of today watching over me, making sure I wasn't expending anymore energy than necessary. And honestly, he was taking things to a bit of an extreme at times. Like, 'not letting me out of bed' and 'acting like my body was made of glass' kind of extreme. It seemed pretty overbearing, but I kinda understood where he was coming from, especially given how much his health and well being deteriorated over time.

But still, it was a bit much.
"I appreciate you looking out for me, All Might," I said as he brought me another tray of food, "but honestly, you don't need to be putting in this much effort. I can take care of myself, you know."
"I'm only taking necessary precautions." he said as he sat it down in front of me, "Last thing I need is an angry call from my colleague, or worse, an unpleasant visit."
I chuckled.
"I would never had thought the great and powerful All Might was intimidated by the mysterious and illusive Eraserhead." I teased as I ate a dumpling from the plate.
He smiled.
"Well, in my prime, maybe not. But I think you and I both know that he's one Hell of a fighter. And in my current condition, I'm in no position to be placing bets between me and someone like him."
I smiled back at him as I took another look at the clock.
My body stiffened.
8:37pm.
'Fuck.' I thought, 'It's already happening. At least, I think it is. Only one way to confirm it. All Might's police scanner downstairs.'
"...Is everything okay?" asked All Might, who noticed the shift in my demeanor.
'Don't let him catch on.' I told myself as I quickly beamed a smile.
"You know, you've spent the whole day looking after me, and it got me thinking. You should really spend more time treating yourself." I said.
He raised a brow.
"In what way?" he asked.
"Well, why not relax? Give yourself some much needed R&R. Maybe take a nice, hot soak after a long day?" I suggested, trying to appear as genuine and sweet, even though I wanted to go into a full blown panic attack, "You've spent so many years protecting and helping everyone else. Why not spend a little time helping yourself for once?"
All Might stood there and thought for a moment.
"Hmm...It has been awhile since I've done something like that. Are you sure you'd be fine by yourself for awhile?" he asked as he looked at me, still a little unconvinced about my suggestion.
"Absolutely!" I said, "Even pros need a break. I'll be fine. Besides, it's not like I'm going anywhere anytime soon." I said.
'Come on, take the bait.' I thought as he stood there for another moment, thinking it over.
"I guess it wouldn't kill me to take a few minutes for myself," he said with a soft grin, "If you need anything at all, just holler for me, okay?" he said as he began to walk out of the room and down the hall towards the bathroom.
I waited a few more minutes until I heard the doors shut before moving the tray away and slowly hobbling out of the bed. When I heard the shower faucet turn on, I slowly made my way down the stairs, as quietly as possible, in an effort to not alert him on my whereabouts. My body still felt weak, but my adrenaline seemed to carry me enough to make it down the steps without completely falling over myself.
I slowly made my way over to the scanner and looked it over. It only occurred to me now that I had never used on or knew how they worked. I played with a couple of buttons and figured out which was the on switch before being loudly greeted to white noise from the speaker.
I cringed and quickly turned down the volume, looking towards the stairs to check and see if he had heard me from the bathroom. After a few minutes of silence, I put my attention back to the machine and fussed with the scanner, trying to find the right channel to listen in on.
After some buzzing and random spikes in dialogue, I finally found the right frequency that allowed me to listen in on the dispatch. For awhile, it was quiet.
Until...
"Control to 7821." *beep*
"7821, go ahead." *beep*
"Control to 7821, we've got an 11-71." *beep*
"10-20?" *beep*
"Mustafu City Forest, located one hour south east of the city." *beep*
"Control to 7821, we need an 11-41. We've got a large number of kids injured, and three suspects apprehended." *beep*
I could feel my heart sink as those words echoed through the living room. I leaned on the counter for support. My legs started to shake from the panic that was beginning to overwhelm me.
"Control to 7821, we've got a 209a. Standby for BOLO." *beep*
Suddenly, three quick beeps came from the radio.
"All units, standby for BOLO over 7821. Go ahead." *beep*
"7821, we've got a 209a. Be on the lookout for several suspects at large with a child by the name of Katsuki Bakugo, age 15, blonde spikey hair, red eyes. Last seen at the Musutafu City Forest at 8:12pm, wearing a black t-shirt and pants. Suspects include a male with scarring on face and limbs. Last seen wearing-,"
As the dispatch continued to list off the team from the League of Villains, I heard a slight creak behind me and then a voice.
"Doe?"
I turned around to find All-Might in a white robe, behind me. I was so consumed by the radio that I didn't even hear him come down the stairs. I wasn't even sure how much of it he heard, but I could tell by the look on his face that he had heard enough. His expression was filled with shock and dispair as we both heard the radio continuing to ramble on.
We stood there, looking at each other, completely still and not knowing what to do or say next.
The jig was up, and the dominos were already beginning to fall one by one. And even though I knew this was going to happen, I still couldn't help but feel unbelievably sad and terrified by what was happening and what was to come.
Nothing but the dispatch played for awhile, until after a minute or two, everything went quiet.
And all I could think to say was one thing.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry."
---------
Author's Note: To those of you who actually work as officers or in dispatch, forgive me. I tried to research this as best as I could. I'm also fully aware that some of these radio codes are more than likely the wrong ones, given that many of these are US police codes, but this was all the information I could find regarding police/dispatch talk.
