《Dark Roses #Wattys2019》Chapter 1

I took my first step inside of my brand new, and empty, house. It was decent in size, and smelt of fresh, but oddly scented, wood.

All throughout this house there are beautifully rich dark wooden floors waiting to be mopped, even upstairs.

My parents have showed me pictures of the house weeks before moving here, and we have definitely upgraded: it's much bigger in person, and beautiful inside and out although it needs to be cleaned.

The pastel blue walls give off a sense of comfort , while the wide windows let in warmth, brightness, and happiness into a house that would be so bleak without it.

We went from living in a small apartment to this, so honestly, I'm grateful. However, for some reason, I still do not feel pleased.

This situation is great for my parents, but just not for me. They've struggled for years with their marriage and financial issues, but finally here we are secure for once.

With my dad transferring jobs more money is going to be coming into the house, and there will hopefully be less stress.

My parents already seem happy for once, and I'm glad for them, but all of my friends, all of my childhood, is 6 hours away from me on a plane.

It's great to start fresh every once in a while, but not going into senior year. School out here started about two weeks ago, and my first day will be this upcoming Monday.

I guess you can say I'm nervous and scared, who wouldn't be?

"Rose it's beautiful isn't it?" My mom questioned disrupting me from my thoughts. She had a huge smile across her face, and seemed super happy. Before, my parents were grouchy all of the time due to past circumstances.

I wish they had another child so I could have had at least someone to stick with through those rough times.

I guess that's a con of being an only child.

I looked around and smiled as well, "Very, it needs to get cleaned though" I laughed crouching to the ground. I slid my pointer finger across the dark wooden floors, and pulled it up showing my mom how dusty these floors truly are.

"Very true, I agree, thankfully though the cleaning ladies should get here and be done before the movers arrive. How about you go upstairs and pick out what room you like the best for yourself?"

I was going to do exactly that, and started heading upstairs.

I can tell that this house had just been built not too long ago. As I went up the stairs, the wooden floors didn't squeak one bit like how I know a lot of older homes do. Only one family lived in this house before us, I think they had an older daughter around my age.

As I reached the top of the stairs, not only did I realize I need to workout more, but that this house had five bedrooms.

If we're a family of 3, why didn't my parents get a smaller house? Maybe they got sold on the gorgeous updated kitchen we have downstairs, and just couldn't say no.

After realizing which room is of course the master bedroom, I explored the other four rooms trying to determine which one I wanted to be mine.

One room had a beautiful bathroom in it, one room had a good amount of space with its' own built in loft, one room had an excellent view where you could see the mountains from, and another room had a huge walk in closet.

I decided to choose the room that had the bathroom in it. It's easier to go to the bathroom at night if you only have to take a couple steps to it, rather than run down the hallway to get to it fearing monsters will come after you.

When I walked into my now official room, I went to the window that overlooks the neighborhood street, and the house across from me.

It's made out of dark brick, and completely seems like it's filled with negative and evil energy.

It looks nothing like that house off of the movie Monster House, but you sort of get the same vibe from it.

Like something or someone is watching you.

I backed away from the window and tried to picture how I want my room to turn out. Do I want it to be painted a magenta color, or a popsicle cream orange with a pinkish undertone? I know for sure I want to get a lot of decorations for my room, and a huge long mirror.

Since the other rooms wont have any usage, I'm sure my parents will turn two of them into a guess room, and maybe they'll let me have the last room so I can turn into my own chill room.

If the people at this school are nice, maybe I can make a few friends and invite them over from time to time.

I could put in a few sofas and chairs, an air hockey table, and much more.

There's definitely enough space.

The sound of a doorbell ringing disrupted me from the vision I was having. I walked towards the top of the stairs to see who could ever so kindly be visiting us to introduce themselves.

Or maybe, they're just nosey individuals trying to see who the knew people down the block were and if we're suspect, or possibly dangerous.

Of course my parents opened the door, since I'm never allowed to open the door by myself unless we're 100% expecting someone.

With everything going on in the world we live in today, people will come up to your front door and automatically snatch you if you open it.

I saw my dad walk towards the door with my mom behind him, and opened it.

In the doorway stood a tall woman dressed in bright colors, a tall man wearing the typical suburban dad outfit, and a young handsome guy that looked around my age.

"We're your neighbors!! Welcome to the neighborhood!" The woman shouted with excitement along with the man. The boy just rolled his eyes, I'm guessing he was embarrassed.

I would be too.

I saw my dad do his fake smile-the type of smile you give off when you're uncomfortable, but still trying to be nice.

He probably thought they were weird. Having new neighbors shouldn't be that exciting.

"Hi nice to meet you guys. I'm Pete, this is my wife Clara, and that's our daughter, Rose" My dad spoke pointing to me at the top of the stairs. I quickly walked downstairs standing beside my parents.

"Wow such a beautiful family, oh and um I'm Jess, that's Mark, and this is our son, Danny" Jess spoke placing her hand on her son's shoulder which looked awkward because he's a bit taller than her. He had to be about 6'1, or even more than that.

I waved as my parents and them began to converse.

They should have invited them inside of the house instead of holding the door wide open, but again our furniture and everything hasn't arrived yet.

I'm pretty sure the cleaning ladies are going to be here soon though. It's not that we can't clean the house ourselves or that we're lazy. It's just that, this house needs a professional deep clean.

Deep, deep, clean.

"How old are you Rose?" Jess questions with a smile on her face.

"17, I'm going into senior year" I smile back making eye contact with her, and then Danny.

Awkward, why did I do that.

"Really? So is Danny! Well I mean he already started school, but, maybe you guys will have a couple of classes together!"

Why does it seem like this woman is excited about mostly everything.

I can bet you ten dollars she makes her family play board games with her every Friday, and is a stereotypical stay at home mom.

"Maybe, that would be cool considering the fact that I have absolutely no idea where to go, and I do not know anyone" I started to laugh at the end. I'm more nervous about starting this new school than what I thought.

Or maybe I'm just nervous and uneasy about speaking to them.

My mom began to speak "better yet, how about Danny and Rose drive to school together Monday-" my mom looked at Danny.

"-Maybe you could help her out and walk Rose to her classes just for the first few days?" She finished.

Danny gave a simple, and nice response.

"Sure, absolutely, I would have no problem with that" he spoke looking at me. He had tan skin, bright green eyes, and light brown hair. I bet he gets all of the girls at school, and I bet he's "popular" as well. I mean come on now, who wouldn't want him? He looks like he could be a model for crying out loud.

He's not exactly muscular, but still. He's just the right amount of everything.

Maybe I'll have a chance at becoming friends with him.

After a few more conversations made, we all said our goodbyes, and the family walked away.

Thank God.

However,

Turns out they're the neighbors to the left of us.

Unfortunately, I think I'll be seeing them more often.

At the end of the day, mostly every family on the block came to our house, and introduced themselves to us. They all seemed so nice, welcoming, and gave us their information as well in case of emergencies.

Right now my curiosity about this neighborhood had vanished.

Now I know where mostly everyone lives, what type of people they are, and everything.

However, I still have questions about the mysterious dark, and haunted, house across the street.

They never came.
