《The Change》Chapter Five

Annabeth couldn't fall asleep. Perseus's words kept running over and over in her head like a song on loop.
"The glass ball broke completely this time."
She could remember their time in Tartarus vividly. She often revisited it in her dreams. Her thoughts filled with Perseus's face as he controlled the poison and turned it against the goddess of misery. His eyes gleaming as if he were enjoying her pain.
On the Argo II Perseus had finally confronted her one night saying that they needed to talk about what happened if they were ever going to stop skirting around it. He explained how when he had controlled Akhlys' poison he felt as if a glass ball had broken inside of him, and he wasn't sure what it meant, but it couldn't be anything good.
Annabeth had been glad that Perseus had chosen to confide in her, but now she would give the world if Perseus would have gotten his new powers any other way.
What am I going to tell everyone. They will expect me to tell them how the conversation went. Annabeth didn't want to share that information. She couldn't process what had happened herself.
How did he get the ball to shatter completely? What dark deed did he perform if putting the goddess of misery in misery only broke part of it?
Thoughts kept running through her head with no real answers visible. As she was replaying their conversation again in her head to check for any hidden clues, she fell into a restless sleep.

In the morning Piper was the first to notice Annabeth's absence. Annabeth and Piper usually woke up earlier than the other campers and were in the dining pavilion the moment breakfast began, but it was ten minutes of waiting after breakfast started at 7:30 before anyone joined her. When the first Athenian camper walked in Piper immediately walked up and asked where she was.

"She's still sleeping. She slept through her alarm and no one wants to be the one to face her 'pre-breakfast wrath,'" Hadley explained in a quiet voice. "You can go wake her up, but I don't recommend it."
Piper nodded still confused before walking up to Leo. "Hey, Leo!" She waved to get his attention. "You are coming with me to go wake up Annabeth."
Noticing Leo's alarmed look she rolled her eyes and walked over to him. "Come on you big pansy. You don't even have to be the person to wake her." She grabbed his arm and dragged him in the direction of the Athena cabin.
"Hang on, Posh Princess," he held his arms up in surrender as she glared at him. "Why do you need my help? Why not get Malcolm? He is actually in her cabin, and she won't kill him."
Piper rolled her eyes as if laughing at his obvious stupidity. "If Annabeth is mad that someone woke her up, I need someone I can blame it on and have her actuality believe what I'm saying."
"Please, you can get one of the Stolls for that. You just want me dead because I'm your competition. I can't help if Jason finds this hot bod irresistible." He flashed her a cheeky grin.
"Shut up and move, repair boy, or you actuality will be the one to wake her up"
Leo started moving slightly faster to keep up with Piper's long legs.
"I'm sorry to disappoint you but I promised Calypso I would take her out the millisecond I fixed Festus's eye twitch, so no waking up people of the Annabeth species today."
They reached the cabin door and barged in without knocking only to be greeted with the sight of three demigods about to pull Annabeth's pillow out from under her head as she snored softly. They were younger campers and obviously didn't understand the danger of what they were about to do if their giggles gave anything away.

Piper rushed to stop them, running carefully so that her Converse didn't make too much noise against the hard floor. Leo quickly ran after her, but tripped on a large pencil case and face planted. A loud crash followed by a groan echoed throughout the cabin. Piper stopped in her tracks and grimaced as Annabeth rolled over in her bed and wiped her eyes. Piper glared at Leo who was staring at Annabeth with wide eyes from his place on the floor.
"What time is it?" Annabeth murmured with a gruff voice. Her eyes blinked open and she pulled her arms out from underneath the covers. The three Athenian demigods began quietly stepping away before Annabeth could yell at them. Hm, I guess they do have some common sense.
Piper checked her Captain America themed watch. "3 o'clock in the afternoon."
Annabeth jolted into an upright position slightly more awake. "Why didn't you wake me up? I have things to do!" She slapped her palm against her face, before staring straight ahead with a scared expression. "di immortales, I'm supposed to be supervising open-practice at the training arena."
Annabeth turned her head towards Piper who was trying to contain her laughter. "What is it? I swear if the Stolls sprayed my hair green in my sleep again, I am going to murder a son of a Hera."
"Creative swear, but, as much as I would have enjoyed the sight, you still have your normal hair color." Annabeth gave her a confused look. "I'm laughing because it's actually only 8 o'clock."
Annabeth fell backwards onto her pillow and let out a large sigh. She faintly muttered something that sounded like, "Then why did you wake me up?" Piper frowned. Usually Annabeth was ready to start the day the moment she woke up.
Piper raised an eyebrow, "Are you gonna go back to sleep?"
"Yeah," Annabeth replied half-heartedly. "I didn't get good enough sleep last night."
Leo and Piper glanced at each other. "And why is that?" Leo spoke up.
"Demigod dreams about Perseus."
Piper took a step forward. "What did they show?"
"The showed him shattering the ball and getting his powers by murdering Tartarus."
Annabeth started snoring before her sleep muddled brain could understand the importance of her words.
