It was about 3 am and I heard something outside of the window. My eyes shot open and I slowly sat up in bed. Shadows. I could see shadows lurking around the back of the club house.

“Shit.” I said to myself as I quietly got out of bed and ran to the phone out behind the bar.

I had Jax’s number crumbled in my fist and with shaking fingers I dialed it.

“What?” He said his voice thick with sleep.

I took a deep breath and ducked down.

“Jax I think someone’s outside.” I whispered quickly.

“McKayla?” He said. I could hear him start to wake up.

“Jax! Someone’s outside!” I said a little louder.

There was a beat of silence before he answered.

“Stay in the apartment. I’m on my way.” He said before hanging up.

As quietly as I could I hung up the phone and ran back to the bedroom and closed the door.

He found me. He fucking found me. I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m dead. I’m dead.

The club door opened and I heard footsteps. I ran to the bathroom and closed the door.

“McKayla?” It was Jax.

I sighed and opened the door. He had a gun in his hand and was holding it down to the floor. He smirked a little when he saw my nightshirt. I blushed and he tucked his gun in the waist of his jeans.

“Is it safe?” I asked him.

He sighed and took me in his arms.

“I don’t know yet.” He said into my hair.

I closed my eyes and held him tighter. I could feel myself shaking and so could he.

“Hey, I promise I won’t let anything happen to you.” He said softly.

I nodded and we pulled away. I heard more footsteps down the hall and saw Clay and Gemma. She was holding Abel.

“You two stay in here with Abel. We’ll get you when it’s clear.” Clay said.

I nodded and Gemma grumbled. Abel started to cry and Gemma sighed loudly. I reached out and took Abel from her.

“Why don’t you try and sleep?” I told her.

“Yeah right. Like I can sleep now.” She said.

I nodded and slowly lied Abel down on the bed. He fell asleep with ease. I smiled softly at him and caressed his cheek.

“What did you see?” Gemma asked me.

I sighed and rubbed my eyes.

“I heard a bottle break outside then when I looked out, I saw shadows. Four of them.” I said.

“Christ.” She said under her breath.

We sat in silence for what seems like hours. The only noise was the clock ticking on the wall and Abel's deep breathing. Gemma threw her hands up and defeat and stood up.

“Where are you going?” I asked her.

She turned and looked at me.

“To make some coffee. I have to be at work in two hours.” She said as she opened the door.

“Gemma no! They said to stay put!” I said as I got up to follow her.

She shook her head and walked down the hallway. What happened next, I swear was in slow motion. I looked to my left at the window and saw a man standing in it. He raised his arms and I grabbed Gemma and pulled her to the ground. As I was doing that, there was a loud pop and the glass shattered from the window as we fell. It rained down on us and I covered my head and face with my hands.

“McKayla! Gemma!” Jax shouted through the club house.

“Over here!” I called back.

He dropped his gun to the floor and crouched down beside us. Gemma and I both sat up and looked at each other slowly. Above our heads was a single bullet hole. Jax put his hands on my face and turned me to look at him.

“Are you alright?!” He said loudly.

I blinked and he shook me a few times.

“McKayla?” He said again.

I nodded and looked at him.

“I’m fine, Jax. I’m okay.” I said.

My voice sounded distant. He kept one hand on my cheek and looked at Gemma.

“Mom, you alright?” He asked her.

She nodded and leaned up against the bar.

“Yeah, I’m fine.” She said.

My hands were burning. I looked down and saw blood dripping from them.

“Shit.” I said under my breath.

Jax looked down and put his hands on my arms and helped me up.

“Come on, I’ll clean you up.” He said gently.

Clay and the others came running in and went to Gemma. Jax looked at Clay and he nodded then Jax led me into the bedroom. Little Abel was sleeping safe and soundly on the bed.

“He’s still asleep.” I said as we passed him.

Jax smiled and sat me on the toilet. He took a towel from the cabinet and soaked it with water. I held my hands out to him and he gently cleaned them up.

“What the hell happened? I told you two to stay put.” He said in a low voice.

He sounded so angry. I rolled my eyes and winced when he started using alcohol on the cuts.

“Gemma went out to make coffee so I went to bring her back. That’s when I saw the man in the window and pulled her down before he fired.” I said.

Jax groaned and patted my hands dry.

“That’s my mother. She never does what she’s told.” He mumbled.

I looked up at him and he sighed.

“I think you’ll be alright. They’re not deep and I don’t see any glass.” He said.

He took some gauze that was under the sink and wrapped my hands up. There was a knock on the bedroom door. Abel woke up and I went to him. Tig was standing in the doorway. He nodded for Jax to come out of the room. I picked up Abel and bounced him on my hip and walked around the room.

“I know I know.” I said to him.

He started to sniffle and he stopped crying. I smiled at him and we walked out of the bedroom.

“Watch your step Mckay.” Chibs said.

He accent made it sound like Mickey. I smiled and walked over to the couch. Gemma was talking to Clay at the bar and Kip was sweeping up the glass. Clay saw me sit down and he walked over to me.

“My wife told me what you did. You saved her life.” He said.

I blushed and adjusted Abel in my arms.

“It’s not a big deal really.” I said with a shrug.

He sat down beside me and took Abel.

“Yes it is. It shows loyalty. To the club, to us.” He said seriously.

I picked at the bandages and he chuckled.

“Thank you.” He said.

He stood up and took Abel to Gemma. I sighed and relaxed in the couch. The next thing I knew, I felt someone beside me.

“Hey, you alright?” It was Kip.

I slowly opened my eyes and smiled at him.

“Yeah, just tired.” I said.

He nodded and handed me a cup of coffee.

“Thank you.” I said.

He smiled and got up. I took a drink of the coffee. Around me I could hear Jax talking to someone on the phone and someone typing on a computer. I pulled myself up from the couch and saw Juice sitting with a laptop. Jax smiled at me before turning his back to continue his conversation. I didn’t see Gemma or Abel anywhere so I figured they went home or to the office. Jax hung up the phone and came over to me.

“That looks good at you.” He said with a smirk.

I raised my eyebrow then remembered I was wearing his Reaper shirt. I blushed and tugged at the bottom of it.

“I’m gonna take a shower.” I said.

He chuckled and I went into the bedroom. I closed the door and leaned against it. I knew it was him. I knew he found me. And I know I’m not safe.
