《Westwood School》Honky Tonk Women

"Oh my god Caspian, hurry up, we haven't got all day," Matteo shouted back at Caspian who was flirting with a bunch of other tourists.

I shook my head and laughed, as we wandered lower Broadway in Nashville for the second night in a row, hoping to get absolutely wasted or at least get a girl. I looked up at a glowing sign for a honky-tonk bar. It seemed like an older one, definitely not a new touristy destination like some, but seemed to be bustling. I could hear someone singing"Me and Bobby McGee" inside.

"Hey, let's go in here," I said to the other three boys I was traveling with. Matteo, Caspian, and Laurent. I didn't pay attention to what the other guy's responses were and we opened the door and wandered in.

The smell of beer, cigarette smoke and leather was the first thing that hit me. The place was bustling with people, all laughing and talking, but my eyes went straight to the girl on stage. She looked to be about my age, and if she was, she was also way too young to be in here. She nodded her head with the music. The song seemed to end and we made eye contact for just a moment, and I saw her do a double-take, casting her eyes back on me, or rather us. She turned around and whispered something to the bad, possibly what she was gonna sing or play next. She turned around and flipped her obviously thick dirty blonde hair confidently.

"Thank y'all, umm I'm gonna sing a song y'all-all should know considering it's by Dolly, y'all know how much I love her. Nothin' else really needs to be said," She laughed. Her voice was breathy and imperfect, but somehow also smooth and sweet. It was innocent and passionate, and she had this cute accent that wasn't overpowering or fake, but definitely there.

She turned to look at the band and they counted off the beats, and she turned around and sang quickly, catching me off guard.

"Why'd you come in here lookin' like that!" She started to sing, dancing as she did. I knew the song, it was a super upbeat country song. One of Dolly Parton's more country songs, and that's saying a lot.

Her voice was so expressive and full of emotion, but not only that, the way she moved dramatized the song. She sang and winked and then, she climbed off the stage and onto a table. She danced and sang and people gathered around. I stood there dumbstruck and the other boys pushed towards her. She was dressed in these super high waisted ripped jean shorts that showed off her insane thighs, and a cropped 70's looking crochet top, revealing a piece of her visibly tiny wait compared to her curves. She bounced around singing until the whole bar was too. Stomping her cowboy boots and swaying to the beat. Acting out the words.

"All decked out like a cowgirl's dream?" She sang and I found myself somehow right in front of her. She bent down on the table so she was almost eye level with me.

My heart stopped as she sang "Why you're almost giving me a heart attack!" Dear god I could be saying the same thing to her, I thought to myself.

When the song stopped the whole bar erupted into applause and cheers. I saw Laurent wander over to her open guitar case and put some money in it.

"Aww bless your heart! Thank you!" she said, maybe to him, maybe to the audience. "OK this is my last song, so stick around to hear it. I know y'all probably hear it a lot down here, but look, I love myself a British boy band."

My head popped up at the mention of a British boy band, and I saw my guy's heads do the same. But as soon as the music started I knew exactly what the song was. Does this girl really think she can sing the stones?

"I met a gin-soaked bar-room queen in Memphis-" She started singing.

Ok, maybe she can. Caspian threw me a glance and smirked. I saw Laurent had gone to the bar and brought us all a beer with his fake ID. but hey we can all drink in Britain so it's fine.

"It's the honky tonk women!" She sang and picked up a guitar. She began to play the guitar solo and I dropped the beer Laurent had just handed me. Holy shit.

"I am not buying you another one," Lauren scoffed, elbowing me. I didn't care as I watched her sing and sway to the music. She seemed out of the wrong decade like I would not be surprised to see her dancing at Woodstock or as a groupie in the 70's.

"Alright, y'all! It's past my bedtime," she joked with the crowd. I watched her pack her stuff up and climb down from the stage. She pulled her hair up into a thicky blonde ponytail and put on a leather jacket. I caught Caspian studying my face, no doubt showing every inch of awe I felt. Then I watched in horror as he walked right up to the girl with a big smile on his face. I knew that damn smile. Caspian was quite the flirt.

But, as I watched, it was hard not to stifle a laugh. The girl didn't seem to fall for his tricks like almost every girl at Westwood Academy had. She rolled her eyes at him but ended up nodding and following him towards us. I felt my heart start to beat at an unprecedented rate. I felt hazy, even though I had nothing to drink. She walked with such confidence I hadn't seen before.

"Hey, so y'all needed a tour guide around here?" She seemed to joke sarcastically and strode out the door. Matteo, Caspian, Laurent and I looked at each other and quickly followed her onto the street. It was much darker than when we came into the bar she was singing at. The flashing neon lights lighting up the crowded street that people were walking in.

"I'm Magnolia, by the way, I know, I promise it's not a stage name." She seemed so sweet but confident and assertive.

"This is Matteo, Laurent, and Rowen," Caspian introduced us. I threw a glare his way and no doubt so did Matteo and Laurent, annoyed that he had spoken for us.

"So y'all are all from the Uk?" She tilted her head, looking up at us, despite the fact she was fairly tall for a girl, maybe 5'8 or 5'9'?

"No, I am Parisian and Matteo is from Madrid," Laurent explained. She just nodded and we began to walk together down the street.

"I love Madrid, Paris, and London," She said, excitedly. Magnolia seemed to have a lot of energy, as she almost skipped, bouncing down the street in front of us.

"You've been?" I said, unable to mask the shock in my voice. She doesn't seem exactly like the kind of person to have been, well, she didn't seem wealthy enough to, to be honest, I thought to myself.

"Many, many times. Why, heck, my dad grew up in the countryside of England." She paused and looked around at our no doubt surprised faces, "What, didn't expect me to have traveled far 'cause you think I'm some sort of backwater hick redneck?" She demanded, seeming both genuinely angry and teasing at the same time.

"No no of course not-" I started. And then, to my surprise, she started speaking fluent French to Laurent. I spoke French well enough to know that her accent wasn't one you could just gain from Duolingo.

After they finished their rapid-fire conversation, she smiled smugly and Laurent looked at us dumbstruck.

Before any of us could say anything, she started prancing towards another bar. We followed her blindly like puppies.

"I call dibs on her tonight," Caspian whispered to me, insinuating a night similar to last night's where he had wandered off with a bachelorette party, and came home this morning claiming he got with the bride.

"Cas, no. She seems young, not like some bachelorette we found plenty of the other night." I said with maybe too much assertiveness in my voice.

Caspian shrugged but nodded, seeming to respect my demand.

"Come on y'all, we haven't got all day!' She said, waving and motioning us to follow her to the bar. When we went in, the old man bartender seemed to know her and went around the bar to give her a hug. She smiled at him and chatted as she ordered herself an RC Cola. I realized there was no way she was over 21.

The music started up, and she grabbed my hand and pulled me onto the dance floor. I was too awestruck to resist her. I probably couldn't resist her if I wanted to.

We danced and danced. Most people seem to dance shyly, especially if they were sober which I assumed she was based on her lake of alcoholic beverages. But she moved her hips to the music and danced like she didn't have a care in the world. Bouncing and grabbing me by the hand. I twirled her around and watched her dance. When the song ended she laughed, clapped her hands and walked back to the bar where the other guys were sitting.

"Alright who is my next victim?" She laughed and Caspian jumped up, volunteering himself. She smiled brightly at him as he pulled her onto the dance floor. The music was just as fast if not faster then what we had just danced to.

I sat with the boys as we watched her dance.

"None of you are taking her home, do you hear me?" I said to Matteo and Laurent. I didn't think either of them would, I was mostly worried about Caspian The Flirt. They both nodded and assured me they wouldn't. I felt the need to protect this girl despite the fact she didn't seem scared of anything. I'm not sure if she was reckless or naive or a little bit of both, but either way, she seemed to not have a care in the world.

She continued taking us one by one to dance with her, as I watched as the boys whispered stuff in her ear or vice versa. She seemed to laugh at her own jokes she made more than anyone else.

It was about midnight when we went out into the street again. She turned to look at us and simple said, "Do y'all want ice cream?"
