《Everlasting ღ Newt TMR¹》11. They Want Me Out in the Maze

I feel wind blowing through my hair, as I open my eyes. My head is on the side, so all I can see is that I'm moving forward. But I am still horizontal. What? How is that even possible?
I look up to see Newt looking ahead, carrying me towards the Homestead.
A blush blossoms within my cheeks. Oh, that's how.
His face is serious, his jaw set like stone. I reach up a hand and touch his face, causing him to nearly drop me in shock. "Why do you look so serious, Mr. Grumpy" I laugh.
He shifts his hands to get a better grip, holding one hand underneath my knees, and the other below my neck.
"And you're awake" he states.
"I believe so" I laugh. I feel a sudden sadness wash over me, as I remember what happened before I fell asleep. Another memory. I wonder if Thomas somehow sent me that memory like he did with the last one. But what if these memories, aren't even real memories. He could have created them. I have a sudden fatigue draped over my body.
I feel myself grow faint, and my eyes begin to grow heavy.
"Lori?" I hear Newt mumble, as if I'm below a water surface, and he's talking from above. "Lori, are you alright?"
Then, without warning, the water cleared. "What? Yeah, I- I'm fine" I mumble. "Can you uh, put me down?"
He laughed humorlessly, "You just looked like you were going to bloody pass out, and you think I'm going let you walk on your own?"
"Kinda, yeah" I shrug. He just shakes his head and continues to walk. I groan and fling my head back, causing Newt to stumble.
"So why are you carrying me?"
"Because you slept there all night, and the doors are opening soon. The Runners will be stampeding out there any bloody minute. Plus, the new Greenie will be arriving later."
"So you didn't want me to get crushed?" I smiled.
"I didn't want the Runners to trip over you" He mutters, colour rises in his cheeks.
I nod my head, humming to myself as I swing my legs slightly.
We arrive in the Homestead, and he carries me up the stairs, walking into Minho's room. Once we are in the room, I attempt to stand, but Newt does not allow it. He walks over to the bed and lays me down on it.
"You should get some rest in an actual bed before the new Greenie gets here. We get supplies, so the other Medjacks will need your help taking them back to the hospital rooms" He says, no emotion on his face.
As he goes to leave, I call out for him to wait. I pat the bed beside me, and he cautiously makes his way over before sitting down. "I just want to say, that I'm really sorry" Before I continue, I see he is about to talk, so I hold my hand up in front of his face. "Please, just let me finish. I have been a total shuckface ever since I got here, and I'm sorry for that. I really don't want you all to hate me. The Glade is a small place, and I just- I don't want to be that person" I say fast enough that he can't interrupt me.
I see a small smile curve his lips as he looks me in the eyes, "No one hates you. Especially me" He says. My eyes go a little wide, and he notices.

"I mean, that, I don't want you to think I hate you, because I don't. I've just had a bit of a rough time in the Glade, and, I don't know. I guess I kind of took it out on you, because you were the closest target" Newt says as his smile droops into a frown.
"It should be me apologizing."
I can't help the grin that plasters itself onto my face "Why don't we just say we're both sorry and leave it at that."
He doesn't hate me, I smile to myself.
Newt nods his head in agreement, his dirty blonde hair bobbing slightly.
"Get some rest."
////////////////
It is late afternoon, when I wake up to a loud alarm sounding throughout the Glade. I sit up in shock of how loud it happened to be. That must be the Greenie alarm, I think to myself.
As I stand up, a little dizzy, the alarm stops and someone knocks on my door. Groggily, I tell them they can come in. I turn around, to see Jeff enter the room, a little out of breath.
"New Greenie is here, Lori! Come one, let's go. We get new supplies today" He grins and holds out his hand. I can't help but smile at his enthusiasm, it's so enlightening in such a dark place. I nod and take hold of his hand, jogging to keep up with his long strides.
We reach the Box, just as everyone else has arrived. I see Newt on the other side of the Box, staring towards the ground. No, not the ground. My hand.
I suddenly feel really self-conscious, so I slip my hand out of Jeff's slowly so he doesn't notice. He doesn't seem to though, like the other Gladers, he is too wrapped up in excitement for the new Greenie.
I look around, to notice that none of the Runners are present. Meaning that the Greenie must come while they're out running.
The alarm had been silent for a while now. I looked around, but no one seem fazed by this.
The Box started to make a groaning, scraping sound, suggesting that the lift inside the Box Hole was making its way to the Glade.
After about ten minutes, the noise slowed to silence, and the Gladers and I stood in the quiet for at least twenty minutes.
Finally, the doors began to slide open, and two of the Gladers jumped down to pull open the other set of doors. As the doors opened, and the Gladers saw the new Greenie, they started to shout things down to the Greenie and to each other, saying things like
"Look at that shank."
"How old is he?"
"Looks like a klunk in a T-shirt."
"You're the klunk, shuck-face"
"Dude, it smells like feet down there!"
"Hope you enjoyed the one-way trip, Greenie."
"Ain't no ticket back, bro."
All joyful thoughts to cast upon the newest addition to the Glade.
Newt lowered a rope into the Box, and I decided to try and get closer. Just as I reach the edge of the Box, the boy is being heaved up with the rope, one leg in the loop and his hand clutching on tight. Once he is at the top, lots of the boys reach down as lift the Greenie out of the Box.
The boy has dark hair and eyes, with olive coloured skin, and is not too bad to look at either. The boy stays on the ground, and is welcomed by one of the Gladers saying "Nice to meet ya, shank. Welcome to the Glade."

After a while of the Greenie and Alby talking, the Greenies looks a little scared. Who can blame him though? I have slowly migrated towards Newt, who has just slapped Alby on the back of the head "Wait for the bloody Tour, Alby" Newt says in his strange, yet amazing accent. "Kid's gonna have a buggin' heart attack, nothin' even been heard yet."
Newt smiled as he reaches a hand down towards the Greenie, helping him to his feet, "Name's Newt, Greenie and we'd all be right cheery if ya'd forgive our klunk-for-brains new leader, here."
I stand there mesmerized by his voice, as he and the Greenie converse about the Glade with Alby. Seriously Lori? He apologizes and you're back to 'oh my shuck, he's the most beautiful human being I have ever met'! Not that you're wrong, but that's not the point of the matter.
As I stared, I realized that if I continue to do so, he'll notice, so I quickly tear my eyes away. I notice Newt sizing up all the supplies in the Box, then looking me up and down.
"Tell ya what, Greenie, Lori here won't be able to carry all this" Newt points towards the supplies in the Box. I raise my eyebrows, waiting for him to notice what he said. He finally picks up on it and continues "No offense, Lori. So, the shank here can take you to find Chuckie. Wee little fate shank, but nice sap when all's said and done. He'll set you up a bed for the night." And with that he walks away.
I smile at the Greenie, and he shyly looks at the ground.
"Let's go and find Chuck, I guess" I grin, trying to seem friendly.
As we walk, a veil of silence hangs above our heads, and I can practically feel the confusion, pain and fear radiating from the Greenie.
"You doin' alright shank?" I ask quietly, looking up towards him.
He nods, before meeting my gaze. "This might seem like a strange question" he mutters, "but are you the only girl here."
My eyebrows crease at his question, and he look at my feet as we continue to walk, "Um, yeah, I am. I don't know how or whatever, but I showed up here one day, just like you. Except, I woke in a grave, not the Box."
His head snaps back towards me, eye wide and his mouth forming an 'o'. I laugh at his shock, and shake my head. "And before you ask, I have no idea how I woke up in a grave, and why I was the only one to have woken up in a grave."
He just nods his head, before continuing to talk in a low voice "So you know nothing about this place either?"
I think about the memories I was sent, and I shake my head "Nope, nada. We're all the same. Wakin' up in the bloody Box with basically nothing in our shuck heads." My throat tightens, as I realize that I not only used Glader slang, I used Newt slang. I cleared my throat, "Well, like I said before, everyone except me."
"What makes you different?" The boy ventured.
I just shrugged in reply, as I spotted Chuck near the edge of the tree line.
He smiled as he saw us walking towards him. "Hey, Lori, how are ya?"
"Not too bad Chuckie, what about you?"
"Good, good. Who's the Greenbean?"
I raised my hands and displayed the Greenie, "This is-" Then it hit me. "Ya know, you never even told us your name, Greenie, and I know that you must remember that."
The boy looked at Chuck and I, before replying "Thomas"
"Tho-Thomas?" I stutter. "Your name is Thomas?" He just nods.
"Okay, um, I have to help put supplies away. I'll see you later."
I run into the Homestead, where I have been told a box of supplies waits in my room.
Once I've found the box, I open it to see what WICKED gave me.
Some clothes, a pair of boots, undergarments, hair supplies, some stuff for that special female time, and a small bottle of bright purple powder along with a note.
I read it carefully as I picked it up
'The Maze awaits.'
What? They want me out in the Maze?
"Lori I need to talk to you." No not now. I feel my heart rate speed up, all the thoughts racing through my head. My chest begins to ache, as I realize I'm having a panic attack.
Thomas walks into the room, "Sorry for just walking in, but I need to talk."
I pour some of the purple dust into my hand, as an idea forms
"I can't stay here. They want me to go into the Maze. There's something out there for me, there has to be. I can't deal with you right now. You can't be here. You- you can't really be here."
"What are you going on about? I just want to know why I feel like I know you."
"No, I know you remember. You-you spoke to me first! I can't take this" My heart beat is going absolutely crazy, whilst I am walking towards the door. As I'm passing him, Thomas grabs my arm.
"No Lori, you need to talk to me. How do I know-" but before he can finish, realizing he's not going to let me leave, I blow the purple powder in his face, resulting in him passing out. Huh, so that's what that does. I put the container in my pocket, and run out the door.
As I'm running, I hear people shout out to me. But I don't stop. The doors are closing, but I run for it.
I'm finally inside the Maze, and the doors sound like they're almost shut. I lean forward, my hands on my knees as I catch my breath. I hear a slamming sound, and I turn back towards the doors, just to make sure they're shut. But when I turn around, what I see makes my veins run cold.
In front of the doors, someone is standing, staring right at me. Emotions running across their features; fear, anger, worry, concern and regret.
It hurts me when I realise that in front of the doors, is Newt.
P.s. Ben is not stung in my version. sorry should've mentioned that earlier. There may be more small changes, but it's only so everything fits together.
