《Daughter of Mortis》Resolution

Sabine made the jump to hyperspace as soon as they cleared the atmosphere. Feton Ralius had bid them goodbye and jettisoned the ship using the escape pod. Tolsa remained in the back of the ship, deep in meditation. Sabine's hands flew across the controls. Several warning lights blinked at her. Ania's Force push had damaged parts of the ship unintentionally.

Sabine shuddered to recall the amount of power within that one action. Tolsa had screamed at her to bring the ship down but she hadn't listened. Ania's orders still burned in her ears. She dropped her head into her hands. "How am I going to explain this to everyone?" she muttered to herself.

Footsteps clanged on the metal floor and Tolsa entered the cockpit. She slumped into a chair, gaze hardened. "She's alive. I felt her through my mediation." Tolsa crossed her arms. "We should go back. They'll kill her!"

"They'll kill us too. I'm sorry, but right now, we have to get back to base. Ania knows them. She's been trained to withstand interrogation. She can make it," Sabine said, as much to herself as to Tolsa.

"And if she doesn't? How are we going to explain this? How do you think Ezra will react when he learns that he's lost another friend to the Empire?" Tolsa raised her hands in exasperation. "Stars, Sabine, how do we tell Ahsoka that her daughter has been taken by the Empire again?"

"I don't know," Sabine spat. "I don't know." She turned away from the Twi'lek.

They came upon Atollon all too soon. Two A-wing's appeared, escorting them down to the landing zone. Hera was already waiting, with Zeb and Captain Rex at her side. Tolsa and Sabine wordlessly stepped off the shuttle. Hera took one look at their faces and sighed.

"What happened?" She asked, putting a hand on Tolsa's shoulder.

Tolsa remained silent. "We completed the mission. We couldn't do anything to postpone the vote, but we gathered all the intel we could find. There was a prisoner that was going to be executed. They put him on trial during the senate session. Ania insisted we rescue him. It worked until the bounty hunter her and Ezra met on Kessel showed up," Sabine began.

"Ania covered our escape, but had to meet us at a different landing pad. She was injured and told us to leave. The stormtroopers fired rocket launchers at us, but Ania used the Force to push the ship away."

"She couldn't fight back," Tolsa broke in. "The power it took to move the ship completely drained her. The Empire captured her."

"What about the prisoner?" Hera asked.

"We got him to safety," Sabine replied. "His arrest was partially Ania's fault, when she first left the Empire. That's why she felt like we had to help him."

"Hera, let me organize a rescue mission. We can save her, I know we can!" Tolsa pleaded.

Hera sighed. "I have to talk to Commander Sato first. You two go and rest. We received a transmission from Ezra a little while ago. They're on their way home." Hera turned towards the war room with Captain Rex behind her.

Tolsa followed Sabine towards the huts where everyone stayed. Tolsa entered her tent and was asleep a few minutes later.

Ania opened her eyes to gray walls and a hard bunk. She sat up, still aching from the ordeal. Someone had applied a bacta patch to her shoulder wound. Her weapons and comm had been removed and unusual cuffs were locked around her wrists and ankles.

The doorway hissed open and a familiar face strode in. Grand Moff Tarkin stared her down. "I trust you are quite pleased with your accommodations?"

"Oh yes. I especially love the aura of depression and disillusion," Ania sneered. She went back to working the restraints on her wrist.

"I'm afraid that will do you little good. Those restraints are modeled after one of Cad Bane's inventions. They are made specifically for holding Jedi. The more you struggle, the tighter they get. Try to use the Force, they electrocute you. Come too close to the door and the same thing happens," Tarkin explained.

Ania wracked her brain for the name Cad Bane. She recalled a few stories Ahsoka had told her, as well as one of their shared memories. "Cad Bane was a bounty hunter. Why would you ever implement his works?"

"He was one of the best," Tarkin said almost reverently. "Anyone with impressive skills such as his are highly marked in my book. Speaking of which," he waved a hand to someone outside of the cell. The Nautolan bounty hunter stepped inside of the cell and cast a mocking grin at Ania. "This is Kein Rei. I'm rather surprised you didn't recognize him. Once trained beside you as an Imperial Inquisitor, Kein was reassigned to bounty hunting when he did not possess Force sensitivity."

"That explains how he knew all of my moves," Ania hissed.

"I'm almost offended that you don't remember me, Commander." Kein smirked again. "I always thought we had a...personal...connection."

"The only thing personal I remember about you is an unshakeable loathing."

Tarkin raised a hand, silencing Kein. "I think you will find, Miss Tano, that such remarks will not render you kind treatment in this facility."

"It's Bonteri!" Ania hissed.

"Your name will soon make little difference in the Imperial death records. I will personally oversee your interrogation. Lord Vader has other matters to attend to." Tarkin waved Kein Rei out of the cell. "Good day." He stepped out and the door sealed again.

Ania lay flat on her back, crossing her hands across her stomach. By now, Sabine and Tolsa would be closer to Chopper Base, she reasoned. Hopefully the Rebels would send someone to help her. If they didn't, Ania sighed. She didn't want to think of the possibilities. As skilled as she was, it seemed that this time, there would be little chance of escaping.

Footsteps clanged outside, followed by the unmistakeable humming of a machine of sorts. Ania gulped, bracing herself. She knew better than anyone that any kind of monstrosity could come through that door and no one would care. The footsteps stopped and the door hissed open. She closed her eyes and braced herself.

The Phantom touched down and the door flew open. Sabine had come with Hera, Rex, and Zeb, leaving Tolsa still asleep. Sabine gasped as Kanan stepped out of the ship, guided by Ezra. Bandages covered his eyes. She looked past them. There was no sign of Ahsoka. Sabine caught the glance between Ezra and Rex and understood. Hera ran to Kanan and wrapped him in a hug. Rex moved away from the group, isolating himself in his grief.

Ezra made his way over to Sabine. "I'm so sorry," she said.

"Where's Ania? I should tell her," Ezra asked.

Sabine bit her lip, wondering how to begin. She sighed. Ezra looked up, worry filling his gaze.

"Sabine, where is Ania? Why wasn't she here to meet us?"

"I'm sorry, Ezra. She was...captured when we escaped."

Ezra raised both hands to his face and began to pace. "No, no, no. She promised that she would come back! They can't both be gone." He scrubbed at his face.

"Calm down. Hera has already talked to Commander Sato about a rescue party," Sabine said soothingly. "I'm sure we can help."

"How? How was she captured?" A weight seemed to press down on Ezra and he slumped onto a rock.

"The bounty hunter you met on Kessel was there. So was Governor Pryce. Ania saved us."

"That bounty hunter knows all of her moves. He knows everything about her and now he's taken her back to the Empire. What if Vader takes control of her again? What if we try to rescue her, but she's gone!"

"Sabine, Ezra," Hera waved them over. They joined her quickly. "I talked to Commander Sato about a rescue mission and,"

"There won't be a rescue mission," Commander Sato said, stepping up to the group. "I am sorry, but given these latest developments, we must focus on the task at hand. Helping the Rebellion grow. We can't risk more numbers by attempting to free Ania from the heart of the Empire."

"What?" Ezra burst out. "No, you can't just leave her there! We have to help her!"

Hera placed a hand on his shoulder. "Ezra, think. What would Ania tell you to do?"

"I don't care! We can't leave her in the hands of those monsters!" Ezra's hand drifted into the bag slung across his shoulder.

"I'm sorry," Commander Sato said again. "But I cannot risk anymore lives for the sake of one. Ezra, you and Tolsa will be under close surveillance so that I know you won't go after her."

Ezra's gaze hardened into a glare. "You're asking me to abandon her."

"With all due respect, Commander," Rex interrupted. "Ahsoka is my general. She told me before she left that it is my job to look after Ania if anything happened to her. I will follow my general's orders."

"Captain, that is not," Commander Sato began.

"Don't try to change my mind. I owe Ahsoka everything. I will be going after Ania. You won't stop me." Rex glanced at Ezra.

"Very well, Captain, but we will be unable to help you." Commander Sato dipped his head respectfully. He turned and made his way back to the base. Hera and Sabine took up places beside Kanan and led him to the medical bay.

Ezra turned to Rex. "Thank you."

"Don't worry, kid. I'll bring her home."

Sadness lingered in the clone's eyes, but was backed up with resolution. Ezra nodded. Yes, somehow they would bring her home. They had to.
