《Daughter of Mortis》Coaxium Caper

The feeling stole over her gently, lulling her into a dreamlike state. With a flash of light and a deafening blast, the vision erupted into flames. She ran her hands over the controls, desperate to regain control of the ship. More blasts ricocheted off the ship, knocking her around.
She locked the autopilot on and ran to the cargo hold. The boy was there, using the Force to hold two canisters steady. The ship rocked again, but he held his focus. She ran and joined him, throwing her power around his.
"We won't make it through the Run," she called, vaguely aware of herself. "The ship will crash on one of the other planets but if we have the canisters, we can still leave with the Revolution."
He nodded deftly, eyes screwed shut in concentration. Sweat ran down his face. The ship began to tremble and shake. The floor rocked beneath them and he fell, his focus lost. The boy gasped, as though he had been underwater the whole time. She reached out with her other hand, pooling all of her strength around the canisters.
"See if you can navigate us through this! I've got the canisters!"
The boy nodded and jumped up. She grunted as another shudder threatened to send her to her knees. Footsteps clanged against the floor. "Get down!" The boy yelled!
She didn't have time to process it before he grabbed her and forced her down. The ship rocked harder than before. An explosion roared over them. She was barely aware of someone leaning over her, shielding her from the fire. The ship jolted and stopped entirely. She opened her eyes...and screamed.
"Ania!"
Ania flew upright and drew in heaving breaths. Ezra grabbed her shoulders. "What is it? Are you ok?" She lowered her head for a minute, calming herself. She was very aware of Ezra's gaze intently examining her face, his long hair dangling into his eyes.
"I'm fine," she said at last.
"You were screaming in your sleep." Ezra searched her gaze intently. "What did you see?'
"It was nothing..."
"No, it wasn't."
She sighed and met his gaze. The concern there shocked her. No one had ever looked at her that way before. "We just...we should be careful on this mission," she said. He let go of her arms and followed her to the cockpit.
She took her seat and flipped a few switches. She could feel concern rippling through Ezra. The Force was moving about him strangely. Ania took another calming breath. She would just have to take extra precautions to make sure the vision didn't come true. Ezra began to pace behind her.
"Relax," she said, continuing to flip switches.
"I just have this feeling...something isn't right," Ezra said, pausing.
"I feel it too, but what choice do we have? The Rebellion needs what this ship can offer and I don't need to add another bounty to my head." Ania pulled up a holomap of the planet. Ezra sat down across from her.
"Kessel is divided into northern and Southern Hemispheres. We'll be headed to the North, where the spice mines are running. There is a large matter build up called the Akkadese Maelstrom around the northern part of the planet. The only way through it is the Kessel Run. Once the coaxium is on the ship, we'll have very little time to get to a refinery."
"I thought Tiel wants it unrefined?"
"He wants us to pick up unrefined coaxium, but believe me, he expects us to deliver it refined. The closest refinery that isn't under Imperial jurisdiction is on Savareen. A lightspeed jump at the right coordinates in the Kessel Run will get us there in time," Ania finished explaining.

"Ok, so how do you think we're getting that coaxium? And what even is coaxium?" Ezra asked. "Everyone seems to forget that I've lived on Lothal my entire life."
"Coaxium is what fuels a hyperdrive and makes traveling through lightspeed possible. It's very explosive,"
"Yeah, I've caught onto that," Ezra interrupted.
Ania narrowed her eyes but continued. "As to how, I suggest we come as errand runners for some major crime lord."
"Who did you have in mind? Jabba the Hutt?" Ezra laughed.
"Actually, yes. Tatooine is Hutt controlled and is in the Outer Rim so it wouldn't be strange for Jabba to buy coaxium from Kessel. The problem will be not getting distracted. I'm sure you've heard about the slaves?"
Ezra nodded. "When I first met everyone, they were on a mission to save some Wookie slaves from Kessel. I've been here once, but not the same place and not through the Maelstrom."
"You must've entered the planet a different way. This way is the fastest way to the coaxium vault." A loud beeping interrupted her. Ania jumped up and threw herself into the pilots seat. "Hold on. We're coming out of lightspeed."
The hyperdrive deactivated almost instantly and they were dropped right outside a large debris field. Ezra's eyes widened. "Whoa. That's one big cloud."
"There's the Kessel Run. Here we go!" Ania urged the ship forward. The Run was bumpy flying. Bits of debris were randomly flung through it. They were nearly through the run when Ezra spotted a hulking object blocking their path.
"Um, Ania, did you know about the Imperial blockade?" He pointed to the massive Star Destroyer before them.
Ania's eyes widened. "Nope! Change of plans. We're going to hope this cloaking device works." Ania pulled a lever, initiating the cloaking mechanism. "I've read the plans for the prototype they used in the Clone Wars. They were trying to come up with a way to mask organic life signatures."
"Maybe Tiel's engineer friend figured it out," Ezra said nervously.
The cloaking device appeared to be working. They were flying under the belly of the Star Destroyer. There was no sign of TIE fighters yet. They both let out sighs of relief when the Star Destroyer was behind them.
"We should keep the ship cloaked as long as we can," Ezra pointed out.
"It has to recharge sometime but if I convert auxiliary power to it now, it will last for a while."
Ezra furrowed his brows, thinking. "What if we leave it on until the ship is hidden, then turn it off? When we take off, we can turn it back on again."
Ania smiled. "I like that plan."
"Are you putting your helmet back on?" Ezra asked. Ania shook her head. "Well, let's hope no one here knows you."
"If they haven't been on Tatooine for a while, they won't." Ania brushed her hands beneath the control panel. She hit a button and a compartment dropped open. Inside were several pairs of flight goggles, monoculars, etc. "I'll wear one of these, just in case," she said, picking up one of the goggles. She quickly slid them on and closed the compartment.
Minutes later, the two of them were standing outside one of the many spice mines. Slaves carted around canisters of spice. Several carried pick axes with dulled tips. Overseers watched them with shrewd eyes; masks covered their faces. One of the overseers approached Ezra and Ania. The Quarren held up a hand to stop them.

"What is your business here?" He asked.
"We're here to pick up a shipment for Jabba the Hutt," Ania said smoothly.
"A shipment of what?"
"Coaxium."
The Quarren pulled a datapad off his belt and checked a list. "There is no coaxium shipment listed for Jabba."
Ania put her hands on her hips. "Of course not! Do you think one of the biggest crime lords in the galaxy would want his shipments traceable?"
"We won't be giving you anything unless you can provide us with the shipment details," the Quarren said firmly. Two overseers nearby held up their blasters.
Ania glanced at Ezra and motioned him closer. She pulled out her own datapad and pretended to type something into it. She handed it to the Quarren. "See? The shipment info is right there," she waved a hand subtly in front of him.
"Jabba will be expecting his shipment. You'd better take us to get it," Ezra added, waving his own hand before the Quarren.
He nodded slowly and handed the datapad to Ania. The other two overseers turned back to their work, seeing that they wouldn't be needed. Ezra winked at Ania as they followed the Quarren down through the mine shaft. Ania struggled to keep her expression neutral as they witnessed the brutalities the slaves endured.
"Did you ever have targets sent here?" Ezra whispered.
"No, mine were all taken alive and then killed, or killed on sight."
They reached a large metal vault at last. The Quarren typed a code into the vault's keypad and the door hissed open. "We only need two canisters. You will help us put them on a cart," Ania ordered, moving the Force through the Quarren's mind again. He nodded and pulled a cart over to them.
Ezra grabbed one of the heavy canisters but paused. "There are subzero units in here. We could put the coaxium in there for extra precautions." Ania nodded and he quickly loaded the canister into the unit. Ania placed the second one in and helped Ezra put the unit on the car. The Quarren grabbed the cart and pushed it back to the surface.
A scream split through the mine. Ezra instantly turned towards it. Ania followed his gaze. A young Twi'lek girl lay on the ground. Her mother held back by another overseer. The young girl tried to sit up, but a Zygerrian whip struck her again. Ania gritted her teeth. The whip struck again and the girl cried out. The overseer raised his hand again. Its decent was stopped. Ania tightened her grip on the overseer's wrist.
The second overseer ran towards her, but Ezra's foot collided with his head, knocking him to the ground. "Release me at once!" The overseer hissed at Ania.
She wrenched his wrist the wrong way. He cried out and dropped the whip. Ania swiped a card from his belt and tossed it to the Twi'lek woman. The woman quickly freed herself and her daughter. She looked to Ania momentarily and nodded.
"You scum! You'll never make it off Kessel alive!" The overseer growled. Ania pulled a blaster from her holster and stunned the overseer.
"We'd better go. That coaxium will be heating up fast." She began to sprint for the exit.
Chaos was erupting all around them. The Twi'lek woman had set to work freeing the other slaves and they were quickly over powering their oppressors. Outside was no better. Ezra spotted their coaxium but the overseer was dead. They grabbed the cart and began to run towards their ship.
A blast bolt narrowly missed Ania's head just as they were nearing the ship. She turned and spotted a Nautolan chasing after them on a speeder. He fired again, this time aiming for the coaxium. "Get it on board!" Ania ordered. She let go of the cart and whipped out her lightsabers. She continued to run after Ezra but blocked the blast bolts. The Nautolan maneuvered his speeder between her and the ship.
He jumped off and pulled out a pair of plasma blades. "Hey there little traitor," he crooned. "Vader's gonna pay me a fortune for your head."
"Bounty hunter," Ania hissed. She lunged at him, bringing both sabers down on his head.
The Nautolan blocked easily and kicked her stomach. Ania backed away, coughing. "I expected so much from you. Don't tell me I'll be disappointed." This time, he attacked first. Ania blocked his blows but missed her own strikes. The Nautolan grabbed Ania and flung her onto the ground. She heard a rumble as the ship took off. Ezra must have activated the autopilot because suddenly the ramp lowered and he was there. Ania clipped her lightsabers onto her belt and took a running leap. The Force propelled her onto the ship.
The Nautolan hurled something at her. Ania gasped and fell short of the ramp. Ezra reached out and caught her. He levitated her closer until he could grab her. Once she was on board, he closed the ramp and ran back to the cockpit. Ania screwed her eyes shut and pulled the plasma blade out of her side. She held the wound tightly and stumbled into the crew quarters where the med kit was stored.
"Ania, I could really use some help here! Your new friend is chasing us!" Ezra yelled over the intercom. Ania grimaced as she stuck herself with a healing stem. She checked her bandage once more before running into the cockpit.
She set the coordinates and checked their navicomputer. "We're almost to the jump point." A blast hit the ship and something clanked in the cargo hold. "Get down there and keep those canisters steady! If they blow, we're done!" She ordered. Ezra jumped up and ran. Ania kept her eyes glued to the navicomputer. "Come on, just a little closer!" She urged. The computer beeped at her and she instantly activated the hyperdrive.
Safely out of danger, Ania ran back to the cargo hold. Ezra had dropped the canisters back and was strapping them down. Ania helped him with the last strap before collapsing against a wall. Ezra slumped down next to her and glanced at the bandages on her side.
"Are you ok?" He asked.
She nodded, closing her eyes. "I just need to let the healing stem work a little." She rubbed her forehead. "I need to figure out who that guy was. He knew my every move, where to strike, how to defend himself. It was like he was trained right beside me."
"You should rest. I can watch the ship for a while," Ezra suggested.
A flash of a mutilated body crossed her vision and her eyes flew open. "No, I won't be able to rest." She stood. "I'm going to the crew quarters. I'll check the databanks and see what I can find on this guy." She left without waiting for an answer.
Her investigation didn't last long. Savareen appeared before she was even a fourth of the way through known Nautolan bounty hunters. Ania shut off the holotable and returned to the cockpit to help with the landing cycle.
The mute Savareen people met them as soon as they landed. "We have two canisters of coaxium that needs to be refined," Ania explained. "We can pay you." One of the people made a series of hand motions. A protocol droid turned to Ania.
"They say they will be most happy to refine the coaxium for you. No payment is required," the droid said.
"Are they sure they don't want payment?"
The woman made her hand motions again. "She says that the Jedi are welcome here and they will not accept any payment from them," the droid pointed at Ania's lightsabers. Four Savarian people grabbed their canisters and left for the refinery.
"What is her name? Is there at least something we can do to say thank you?" Ezra asked.
The woman made a few more hand motions. "Her name is Alfhad, young Jedi. She says the only thanks her people will accept is to view your lightsabers and perhaps see how you build them," the droid explained.
"We'd be happy to oblige," Ania said, glancing at Ezra. He took out his lightsaber and activated it. The people grinned at the sight of his blue blade.
"My design is a little different than most," Ezra grinned. He deactivated his blade and aimed at a pole. He pulled the trigger on his hilt and instantly, a ball of energy shot towards the pole. The people grinned wider and clapped.
"And yours, Togruta," the droid prompted.
Ania bit her lip. "I am not a Jedi, exactly. I guess I'm what you would call a Gray Jedi." She activated her lightsabers. The Savarian people did not clap. Their eyes widened in wonder. The old woman, Alfhad, began to make frantic hand gestures.
"She would like to see you construct your lightsabers. If possible, she wants to see your crystals. Alfhad has never heard of two colored lightsabers before and their unique colors astonish her," the droid translated.
Ania deactivated her blades and sat down cross legged. She closed her eyes, letting the Force wrap around her. The parts of her lightsaber came apart and twirled around each other. The purple kyber crystal floated in front of Alfhad, before being called back to her blade. The pieces swiftly came together and her lightsaber was whole once again. Ania opened her eyes and glanced at Alfhad. The old woman's eyes had filled with tears. She made a few hand motions to the droid.
"Alfhad says that her son was once a Jedi. He was killed during the Purge and she has longed to see a lightsaber so that she might feel close to him again," the droid explained.
Ania replaced her lightsabers and stood. The four Savarians were back already with the refined coaxium in a case. They loaded it onto the ship for Ezra and Ania. "Thank you," Ania said. Alfhad dipped her head in reply.
The two of them climbed back aboard the ship and set their course for Corellia. The trip was silent. Ania crept into the crew quarters where Ezra was sleeping. She watched him for a moment. Her vision had not come true, but still, when his mutilated face flashed before hers, her heart lurched at the thought. Ania returned to the cockpit and watched hyperspace fly around them. At least this coaxium caper is over, she thought with relief.
