《Contrasting Similarities》27. Ski-what?

Third POV.

Nico watched Amira's actions for a moment, moving his gaze only when she started staring at her feet.

The brothers were getting settled, letting Rose sit where she wanted first, then getting seated themselves.

Lucian sat in the middle, with Asher and Jayden at his sides.

Rose sat in the armchair beside Asher, beside which Damien had placed his chair. Josiah was sitting on the opposite side armchair, beside Jayden.

Nico leaned against his desk, crossing his arms and his legs one over the other.

"She's suffering from schizophrenia," he stated, watching mixed reactions.

"Ski- what?" Damien asked, scowling.

"Schizophrenia," Nico said, before he started explaining. He looked between Lucian and Asher while speaking. "The patient starts hallucinating, which feels so real, they can't differentiate from reality sometimes. They start zoning out, staying out of it. That also explains the stuttering or saying incoherent things at times. Like a garble."

Lucian's face was expressionless, while Asher looked like remembering everything and piecing it together.

"And they hear voices. Most patients hear someone whispering, saying or yelling at them in anger. These are mostly voices of people we know, who are no longer alive. Dead relatives or friends or an acquaintance. She didn't identify the voice though. She doesn't know whose voice it is," he continued. "She didn't want to tell me this, for some reason."

Lucian looked out the window at her, a frown prominent on his face.

"I don't know why. But this was an important point and the most common symptom," Nico said, looking at her himself. He stood up straight suddenly and walked to the door.

Opening the door, he saw her in her own thoughts.

He clapped his hand three times making her look up absentmindedly, still lost.

"Close your eyes," he said, before moving his open hand over his own eyes and closing them. He opened them and repeated what he said.

She closed her eyes. Once she did, he moved forward and snapped his fingers near her ears. Her thoughts were getting interrupted by those sharp sounds.

Snapping for about five times, he spoke.

"Do you hear me, Bunny? Can you understand what I'm saying?"

She did. The small daze she was in was interrupted.

She nodded.

"Okay. Open your eyes." Nico said, stepping back.

She looked at him then looked down.

"Was the memory good?" He asked, crouching down before her.

She shook her head. She was seeing Lucas.

"Happy memory, Bunny. Try to have some control over your mind. Make up happy stories or think about everything happy that has happened after you moved in."

She nodded. He smiled and stood up.

"I'll ask about what you were thinking."

Lucian saw the interaction closely, retaining everything Nico did to memory, so he could help when it happened.

Nico walked back in and shut the door softly.

"And what happened today?" Asher asked.

"That was another one of many symptoms. Hearing everything but not catching what was said. Sometimes they listen to the voice so much, they make bad decisions or get so into their own thoughts that it becomes hard to catch up with things. Memory loss is one of them, forgetting what someone said, a minute ago," he said, watching all of their expressions turn to scared.

"Mood swings. Sudden anger, sudden crying. It messes with your mind badly. Her thoughts are jumbled. Everything that happens, slightly similar to something that happened in the past, takes her back to that memory. That's why she zones out and it seems scarily real to her."

Jayden and Josiah looked at Lucian, looking for some kind of solution from their eldest brother. Lucian could do anything, he could do something about this too.

Lucian, however, was staring blankly at the table, the wheels in his mind turning at a high speed.

"So what do we do?" He asked, fiddling with his ring. He looked up with both eyebrows raised.

"I'll prescribe some medications of course. But you have to work a lot," He said, looking at all of them. "That means all of you. One mistake and you might take her back to where we started from."

"There will be no mistakes," Lucian said. The sentence had double meaning. He was assuring Nico as well as threatening his siblings.

"I get she listens to Rose and Asher more?" Nico asked.

"And Lucian, if he scares her enough, which isn't hard," Jayden said, as him and Damien stifled a laugh.

"Poor baby," Nico said, causing Rose to nod her head in agreement.

"You will have to break her." Before he could continue, Damien cut him off.

"A punch would suffice or do we have to get the hammer out?" Damien couldn't help himself.

"We have a Thor Hammer. It's big," Jayden said, nodding his head slowly.

"Ha ha. Very funny, Dex." Nico rolled his eyes. "Si escucho una broma más mientras hablo, te enterraré en el sótano debajo de mi escritorio."

(If I hear one more joke while I'm speaking, I'll bury you in the cellar under my desk.)

Nico said that threat in Spanish partly because he switched to Spanish whenever he got annoyed or mad but mostly because Rose was sitting there. Those little ears didn't need to hear such a threat.

"Okay. Chill," Damien said, going silent when he noticed the look Lucian was giving him.

"So as I was saying, you'll have to break her. Just because she told you about the abuse and some things does not mean she's opening up. You have to break her by Love. Keep the atmosphere happy, love her so much that she starts telling you everything she did during the day. That will be the real opening up."

"That's all that you can do," he said, before being interrupted again.

"This brat," Damien gritted, looking out the glass.

Everyone's gaze moved to the window, even Nico's, to see her stand up and simply walk away from the chair and out of their vision range.

Lucian stood up and rushed to the door. He stopped suddenly and turned to look at Nico.

"Does that mean I'm not allowed to scold her?"

"You can. I simply mean you can't hurt her, physically or with words." Nico shrugged, putting his hands in his pockets and watching Lucian closely.

Lucian nodded and walked to the door. He swung the door open and stood in the doorway, with his hands in his pant pockets.

"Amira Levi!"

His voice shook the walls. Rose flinched and looked at the glass sadly.

A small pitter patter of footsteps was heard, as Amira ran back to the chair and sat down.

But she had a puppy in her arms this time. She glanced up at Lucian, who was staring her down, then looked back down.

The puppy made noises, to which Amira reacted by scowling at him.

"Sh sh," she said, putting her index finger on her lips, shushing him. She sat silent for a while. Lucian wasn't moving, he was just glaring at her slightly. According to her at least.

What he was doing actually, was try to hide the smile that tugged on his lips. As a result there was a twitch in his lips.

It dropped as soon as Amira glanced up again.

He cleared his throat and moved back into the room, shutting the door behind him.

"God! She's adorable," Nico muttered, looking at her, watching her breathe a sigh of relief then interacting with the puppy again.

"Why is there a puppy here?" Jayden asked, furrowing his eyebrows.

"There are two actually. The other one was sleeping, so they couldn't bring it here," Nico answered.

He had puppies in his section of the building. They help keep the patients' mind off of their thoughts. That's exactly what he wanted to do, because Amira was getting too lost.

"Yeah. So, you can still scold her but you can't in any way abuse her, obviously. Now, because Rose knows her better than anyone in this room." He turned to Rose aka a deer caught in headlights. "What changes have you seen in her?"

Rose looked horrified at first, struck with all the attention. Then she slumped down and mumbled things, scared of the attention.

"Speak properly, Rose," Dex said, in a reprimanding tone.

"Don't stare at her," Nico said, looking at all of the brothers with disapproval.

Rose straightened up a little and tried answering. She looked at Amira for support, who was playing with the puppy, sitting in the chair thankfully.

Her nerves calmed down considerably.

"Like she's started acting more like how she was before Dad's death," She said, a little louder. "But sometimes she goes back to acting like she was after his death."

The brothers frowned at that. She really loved her Dad and they wanted nothing more than to give her what she wanted.

"She's become more vulnerable due to what happened that night, that led her to have this condition," Nico said. "Her actions vary from time to time. Sometimes she acts like she did before her Dad's death, sometimes she's closed up and acts like the present her."

"You will need to be very cautious around her. Rose will do the important tasks." Rose snapped her head to him with wide eyes. Smiling, he continued. "This treatment is important for her. Sometimes she will not want things she needs and you will have to help her through it and persuade her to do it."

Rose nodded her head, thinking hard. Levi is the decision maker, she's always been the one who helps her. Now Rose is being asked to help Levi and she's more than ready to do anything for her.

Nico got distracted from the calculations going on inside his head, when he saw Asher focussed somewhere and smiling.

Turning his head, his own amused smile made its way to his lips.

Amira had two fingers touching the seat of the chair, while she was stood up and reached out to grab something from the floor that seemed out of reach, considering she was struggling not to 'leave' the seat.

She didn't want to be in trouble for leaving that seat again and she was trying to reach for the puppy, who had jumped down and shuffled away from her.

"Get back here." She gritted, glaring at the little ball of fur. The puppy barked once then ran away.

"Why don't you go with her and find the puppy?" Nico said, turning to look at Rose directly. Rose nodded and stood up.

As soon as the door shut, he turned to address the brothers.

"Rose might be the soft sweet kid, but she's not the weak one. She's the stronger one, actually," Nico said, looking at them. "As much as I know from what you've told me, Bunny wants to protect her all the time. Everything she does is related to Rose in some way. That's what needs to be stopped. She's caring for Rose so much, that she isn't thinking about herself."

"Bunny is the delicate one, no matter how strong a front she puts on," he continued, seeing the guys were all too focussed in what he was saying. "Don't try to seperate them. That's her pet peeve. You will lose points quickly, if you try to compare them or make them stay away."

"But you said, we need to stop her caring for Rose all the time. How's that possible if they're glued to each other?" Jayden asked, biting the inside of his cheek.

"Leave that to Rose. She's smart. It's her who will have to push Bunny out of her shell. Bunny does everything that she thinks Rose wants. It depends on what they choose." Nico shrugged. "I've explained how she affects things. It's up to her now."

Lucian nodded slowly, looking up when he saw movement outside.

The twins had returned, with the puppy in Bunny's arms again. Rose was trying to pet it but the puppy kept licking her hand, making her scrunch up her face.

"I'm happy you have them back," Nico said, adoring both of the kids. "And I get you're trying to find that bitch?"

His voice turned colder at the end. Damien had explained the situation from their point of view. Everything that had happened and everything that she shared.

"Duh," Damien said, clenching his hands into fists.

"Give me a call when you do." That's all Nico said, before he dropped the cold look on his face to adore the two. His two sisters. They may not be related by blood but these kids had his heart.

He was serious when he said he missed out. That nickname annoyed him, but it became the most prized possession he had. A name from his two sisters, who he couldn't even see.

Alessandro Mazzanti didn't want it and he used every way to cut any old contact from his wife and the two 'bad lucks' as he called the girls.

"What about that old man?" Nico gritted, feeling anger bubble inside him.

"He protested but I had proof," Lucian answered. "He's made everything a mess."

"I kinda pity Claire because she was stuck between Lucian and Dad and none of them could influence the situation more than the other," Asher said, letting out a bitter chuckle.

"I met him yesterday," Lucian said. "He was the one who hung up on them. I don't know what he did, but we couldn't receive their calls after that. He was being smug about it. I swear if he wasn't my father..."

Lucian's eyes turned dark and his fists clenched, so hard, his knuckled made a cracking sound.

Every single man in that room, shuddered at the tone he was using.

"I think we're done here," Nico said, before starting to repeat every point they had discussed. Like a teacher.

The brothers listened silently, trying to remember everything. When he was done, they stood, shook hands and were ready to take their leaves.

"Asher," Nico called out, when he suddenly remembered. Asher stopped and turned to him. "Bunny might ask you for help in her hobbies. Or she might not ask and try for herself. Make sure one of you is there with her the whole time. That will help you bond."

Asher nodded his head.

"What are these hobbies she told you about, if she doesn't mind me knowing?" He asked.

'She might not even try.' Nico thought.

"Oh yeah. It's cooking, gardening and photography. Make sure she does one of these today," he said.

Asher nodded and turned back towards the door again. The brothers had walked out.

"Bunny," Lucian said, in a warning tone.

Amira had put the puppy in the big hood of Rose's hoodie, because Lucian said they can't take it home. She tried to hide it and sneak the puppy to their house, but Lucian knew what she did.

Rose giggled suddenly, drawing attention. Nico walked out of the room and furrowed his eyebrows when he didn't see the puppy.

"It tickles," Rose said, squirming a little, when the puppy licked her neck again.

Josiah chuckled and walked behind her. Pulling the puppy out of the hood, he got a tissue out and wiped where it licked.

Rose stepped away, smiling at the puppy. Josiah put the puppy down and it ran off immediately.

"You guys go ahead, I'll see her out," Nico said, nodding his head towards Amira. Lucian nodded and glanced at her. He turned around and walked away followed by his brothers and Rose.

Nico bent down to Amira's level.

"So, Bunny. Tell me what you thought of."

"Uhm," She stammered turning red from embarrassment, much to Nico's amusement.

So she did think about something happy but embarrassing.

"Go on." Nico cleared his throat.

"When I, well, sat alone in the garden and then Asher sat with me to help, in his way. Everything he did matched so much with what Dad did and he was acting just like him," She mumbled, hoping Nico didn't hear it and think of her as a baby.

"Now that's adorable," He cooed, watching her look down in embarrassment. He chuckled and stood back up.

"So, Asher acts like your Dad," he stated. "Now I can imagine how he was so loveable."

Amira nodded, smiling a little herself.

"You're going to heal, Bunny. Don't give in to what that voice tells you." Nico looked over his shoulder to check if they were alone.

"Don't tell Lucian I said this. But that voice just spews bullshit. None of it is true," he said. She smiled and nodded.

"Alright then. Goodbye. I'll see you soon," he said, smiling sweetly. So sweet Amira's own smile widened and she nodded again.

"Take care of the puppies, Stinky-butt," she said. He let out a deep smooth chuckle and answered with an 'I will.'

This had gone better than expected.
