《Ever Since New York》Chapter 13

It's been a week since I talked to Harry, since the night he told me that we were nothing.
Today marks the beginning of fall and the weather is crispy.
I rolled out of bed and dressed into a pair of dark skinny jeans and a long sleeved black t-shirt.
I grabbed my converse and slipped them on as I grabbed my phone, putting it in my pocket.
After making my way downstairs, I grab a banana and open it, taking a bite as I grab my keys and head to the door.
I look around for my jacket and remember I left it in my locker at work.
Sighing, I walk out to my car and get in, peeling out of my driveway as I make my way to work.
Ms. Jana scheduled me for morning shifts this week and I was running a bit late.
When I pulled up to the café, there were a lot of cars in the parking lot and I mentally shot myself at how horrible I was for being late.
Jumping out of the car, I ran inside and into the back room where the lockers were.
"You're late!" Jana calls out to me as she hands a drink to a customer.
I grimace and open my locker, tossing my phone and keys in it and grabbing my apron, putting it on quickly as I walk back out.
"I'm sorry, Jana. I just haven't been feeling well." I tell her as I grab a plate full of food from Alyssa and deliver it to a table.
Jana gives me a knowing look and continues handing out drinks that she's making.
Alyssa and I continue working until our lunch break and I let out a groan as I sit at the table closet to the work station.

Alyssa grins as she sits next to me. "That bad, huh?" she asks.
I nod and rest my head in my hands. "I haven't been sleeping well. And I just can't..I can't stop thinking about him, Alyssa. And it hurts so much. I thought that if we could continue with...something, then it'd be okay, that that weight would be lifted off of my shoulders." I tell her.
Alyssa rubs my back and the bell on the door rings and she sighs.
"Speak of the devil." she mutters.
I look up and see Harry standing at the entrance, looking around the café.
I swallow hard and shake my head as he sits down at a table, taking off his jacket.
"I got this one." Alyssa says, scooting her chair out to stand up.
I shake my head and stand, getting my order pad out. "I can do it." I say.
She gives me a sympathetic smile and I walk over to where Harry is sitting and clear my throat. "Welcome to Java Dave's. What can I get you?" I ask politely.
Harry looks up at me and I swallow when I see the dark bags under his blood shot eyes.
"Y-yeah, uh. Can I get a coffee? Black." he says.
I nod and turn away, walking to the back and grabbing a cup and the coffee pot.
I walk back to Harry and set the cup down, pouring the coffee into it.
"I'll let you have the pot, just incase you want more." I tell him.
Harry takes the cup and looks up at me. "I do."
I pause and look down, fidgeting a bit. "Anything else?" I ask.
Harry nods and swallows. "Birdie..can-can we talk?" he asks me, reaching out and touching my hand.

I move back and shake my head. "I'm working, Harry. I can't talk right now." I tell him.
He nods and moves his hand back to his coffee cup. "After? I can meet you at your place. Or anywhere you'd like." he adds quickly.
I look at him, then over at Alyssa who waves me over.
"Hang on." I tell him as I walk over to Alyssa.
"What is it?" I ask, looking at her.
"Talk to him, Bird. He looks miserable, like he's hurting just as bad as you are." Alyssa tells me.
I look back at Harry and watch as he rubs his eyes and sips his coffee.
"I don't know.." I mumble, biting my lip.
Alyssa looks at me, taking my hand in hers. "Do it. Just see what happens, okay?"
I hesitate before nodding, turning back and walking towards Harry.
"Come over after I get off, okay?" I tell him.
Harry smiles small at me and nods, downing the rest of his coffee.
He stands up and nods again. "Okay, great. You get off at 3, right?"
I nod and we stand together awkwardly before he kisses my cheek and walks out of the café, leaving me there blushing.
I turn, looking around at the people that had watched and blush more as they all grin and smile at me.
"Eat your pancakes." I tell them with a laugh as I walk back to the work station.
Jana leaned against the register and smirked at me. "Eat your pancakes? Smooth, criminal." she says jokingly.
I smirk and look over, seeing Alyssa and Dylan talking in the kitchen as she helps him wash dishes.
I smile at the sight of them and look over at Jana who's watching them as well.
"How do you feel about them?" I ask.
Jana looks and me and shrugs. "I've known that he's had a thing for her longer than he has. And I really like Alyssa, she's a sweet girl. Dedicated. I've known her for a while and if I had to pick anyone for my boy, I think it'd be her." she tells me.
I nod and smile, looking back at the couple.
Alyssa giggles at something Dylan says and splashes him with water.
Their affection towards each other and how sweet they both are makes my chest ache with envy, but I'm happy for them.
We all spin around when a crash is heard and I sigh at the broken plate in the corner.
"Guess we gotta get back to work, huh?" I say, looking slyly over at Jana.
She smirks and pushes the broom in my direction.
