《The Fox and the Wolf》Chapter 2: Finding him

"Are you hungry?" He asked as he changed course. I followed him curiously until I found we were in a kitchen. He went to the fridge and my eyes widened when I saw him pulled out a piece of ham. I jumped up and snatched it from him in an instant. I quickly scoffed it down and he fed me more. I haven't had ham in so long. He closed the fridge and walked out of the kitchen. Of course I followed him. He went into the lounge room and collapsed on the couch. Before he could say anything I jumped up and draped myself around his shoulders, resting my head on my front paws.
"I've got my own self-heating scarf." Jack said with a chuckle. He switched on the TV and searched through the channels when I saw one my head shot up and I shot off towards the TV. Jack went past it and I looked back at him, silently asking for him to change it back. It went back to the station I wanted and I watched as the foxes on the TV played around in the grass. The show ended a few minutes later though. I walked back to Jack and curled up beside him.
"Hey Jack." I looked over when I heard a male voice. A guy walked into the lounge room and when he saw me staring at him and let out a yelp of surprise.
"Why is that in here?!" He said loudly, frightening me. I buried my head under my paws.
"A rogue chased her in. She's grown attached to me I think and she doesn't want to leave." Jack explained.
"It could have a disease or something." The other guy said.
"She doesn't. I had Emma check her over." Jack retorted.
"How do you think Derek will react to having a fox running around?" The guy asked.
"I don't know, Kyle. Maybe it'll be just like having a pet." Jack said.
"Ok good luck with that. I've come to get you for training." Kyle said and I felt Jack get up. I raised my head, jumped off the couch and followed him outside. He walked to the backyard and when we got there I saw around a two dozen people ranging from the ages 13 to 25.
"Pair up and start sparring. I'll be coming around and watching." Jack said, his beta voice coming out. I watched as people paired up and shifted into their wolves, making grow a little uneasy. I sat off to the side and watched as they fought while Jack walked around. I narrowed my eyes when I saw an older wolf bite savagely into a younger wolf's leg. I shot up from my spot and ran towards them. The wolf was bigger than I was obviously but that didn't stop me. I stood in-between the two wolves and growled at the older one who looked at me in surprise before growling back. My ears were pointing forward, showing that I was on the offensive. Out of the corner of my eye I saw Jack running over. He knelt beside the injured wolf and checked his leg before ordering two other wolves to take him to Emma.

"What were you doing?" He demanded to the older wolf whose ears flattened against his head and had his head bowed.
"I don't care. Leave." He hissed and the wolf slunk away. Jack knelt down and scratched my ear.
"I don't know how you knew but I'm grateful that you did. Good girl." He said and I purred in delight. I walked back to my spot on the sidelines and continue watching as the training continued. They're really good, I'll give them that. By the time they were done the sun was starting to set and everyone was sweating profusely. I ran up to Jack and he picked me up, putting me back on his shoulders. I guess this is my new spot. My body bounced slightly as he walked back towards the pack house. Jack went up the stairs gently so I wouldn't bounce right off his shoulders. He walked into a room and placed me on a bed before walking into another room which I assume is the bathroom. I sniff the scent of the room and find that it's Jack's. I roll on to my back with my legs in the air and close my eyes. I had just drifted to sleep when I heard a laugh. I opened my eyes and looked at a shirtless Jack who was watching me in amusement.
"Comfy there, Mel?" He asked as he pat my belly. He walked off and put a shirt on.
"Hop on." He said and I quickly jumped on his shoulders. I like it up here, it makes me feel not as small as I usually am. My tail was flicking around as he walked down the stairs.
"Hey. What's for dinner?" Jack asked the ladies that were fluttered around the kitchen.
"Wait and see." One of them said without turning around.
"Do you think we could get an extra plate of meat for tonight?" Jack asked.
"Sure. Who is it for?" A different one asked, not turning around yet again.
"Melody." He said and I let out a yip. The women instantly spun around and stared at me with wide eyes before breaking into huge smiles.
"Aww!" They all said in unison. One of the ladies held something out to me and I sniffed it. Meat. I quickly wolfed it down.
"When's Derek coming back?" Jack asked them.
"He should be back tomorrow." One of them said as she fed me another piece of meat. Jack whisked around the kitchen as he helped plate up dozens of meals. I wonder who Derek is. One of the women ran a bell and soon what sounded like a thousand pairs of feet (when it would probably only 30) came through the pack house and gathered in a room, I'm guessing the dining room. The plates were lined up on the bench and another bell was rung. Jack grabbed two plates (one for him and one for me) and walked into the dining room just as heaps of people came rushing out. He sat down close to the end of the table and I jumped down on to the floor and dug into my food. Goddamn this tastes amazing. I was situated right next to the chair at the head of the table. I lifted my head and I caught a scent. I crept closer to the chair as sniffed all around it. There was something about the scent that was bothering me. I let it go and went back to my food just as everyone else came in to the room and sat down. They chatted noisily and you could hear the occasional laugh echo throughout the room. When I was done I hopped on to Jack's lap and tapped his jawline with my paw. He looked down at me with a grin.

"What's up?" He asked and I sniffed at his plate. I let out a whine when I saw that it was empty.
"Does anyone have any meat left that they'd be able to spare?" Jack called out.
"Yeah I do." A female voice called out.
"Go get it." Jack said to me and I jumped on to the table. Children squealed in delight and adults gasped as I ran down the table. I stopped in front of the girl that called out and she looked at me in awe. She pushed her chair back a little and I jumped into her lap. She fed me her meat while she stroked my fur.
"Does it have a name?" She called out to Jack.
"Yeah. Her name's Melody." Jack replied and the girl repeated it to herself. I heard a door slam open and I jumped off her lap and hid under the table in fright. I ran back to Jack's feet and climbed up into his lap before curling into a ball and hiding behind my tail. I heard heavy footsteps and I hightailed it out of there. I jumped off his lap and ran as fast as I could upstairs and to his room. I hid under the covers.
"Hey Derek. You're home early." I heard Jack say.
"Yeah I wasn't needed any longer." A new person said. I heard someone sniffing the air.
"Is there someone new in the pack house?" Derek asked and I froze.
"There's Melody." The girl from before said.
"Melody!" I heard Jack calling me but I didn't move.
"I'll be back." Jack said and I heard him walking. Soon he was standing right beside the bed. He pulled the covers away to reveal my tiny body.
"Come on, Melody. Time to go downstairs." He said before reaching towards me. I bared my teeth and growled at him. I don't want to meet the new person.
"Fine." He said before walking away. He did something in the kitchen and soon the smell of fresh meat wafted to my nose. Before I could stop myself I had jumped out of the bed and raced downstairs. I leapt on to the bench and on to his shoulders, snatching the meat from his hand. I felt him walking as I devoured the delicious flesh. I heard someone gasp and I looked up to meet the eyes of someone I hadn't seen before. I had one word floating around in my head and I didn't want to accept it. I jumped down from Jack's shoulders and raced back up the stairs. I ran into a random room and hid under the bed.
No.
I don't want this.

Four story anthology
[participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] [participant in #NaNoWriMo] Preface: This fiction will contain four different stories set up as a challenge for myself and to get better at writing. The challenge for royal road writathon is a 55.555 word goal while the nanowrimo challenge is 50.000 words. Reader suggestions is turned on, feel free to point out errors I missed and I'll fix them up! Chasing sun, napping softly: Cultivation/Xianxia genre. Some parts will poke at the ridiculousness of the Xianxia gerne. We follow the life of a magical fox monster, who doesn't like how the cultivation world works. Said beast seems to have more knowledge than is usual for normal magical beasts. In it's infinite wisdom it decided to search for the main character of the cultivation world to have a cozy and safe place beside him. Our fox will act as a "wise beast" to coast along on the main characters rise to greatness, all for peace, happiness and that amazing napping spot in the sun. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing in first person. Comedic effect between talking vaguely and sounding wise. The cost of heroism: A story more centered around fights and mental health of hired mercenaries/heroes. The world is infected with an eldritch corruption. Humans are trying their best to explore and clear out wilderness and the dungeons hiding in them to establish new cities. Lords seek for hired hands to do the professional work. Thanks to the setting, the story will show how awful pasts are the norm and how pragmatic people became thanks to that. People exchange their sanity for riches, fame and gods acceptance. Interpersonal relationships change drastically and quickly. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing grim scenes/imparting a feeling of how grim the world is. Writing fight scenes. Showing different mental states. Describing their influence on people during fights, walks or even after successful or failed campaigns. Who will be the next powerhouse? : A story about a gaming show, it's host Staan and the different participants. Stereotype characters, stereotype backstories, silly challenges and quizzes. The winner of those challenges gets powerups for their power system. Be it magic, ki, psychic power or anything else imaginable and unimaginable to reach the power of gods. The challenges for myself with this story: A softer tone for storytelling. Making the reader smile and enjoy themselves. A different try at slice of life story. I was left behind on earth as my family conquered another world and enjoys riches, but that's okey because I got a cheat too! : Stereotypical Isekai story parody twisted into an Urban Fantasy story. The challenges for myself with this story: Writing over the top and overdramatic scenarios/scenes Writing in first person. Walking into stereotypical scenarios and making them more dramatic/giving them a twist. Different type of humor.
