《Hidden Fox》Chapter Two

I grumbled and rolled over as I heard my alarm go off. "Ugh." I sighed and got up, heading across the hall to August's room.

I shook his shoulder. "August!" I whisper-yelled. "Get up!"

He groaned, sitting up and rubbing his eyes. "Whyyyyy?"

I laughed, "Something called school, now get out of bed!"

I left, leaving him to get dressed, and went to take a shower. I dressed in skinny jeans and a pink ombre shirt that faded to white from top to bottom. I grabbed a pair of flats and my backpack and walked downstairs. I found August in the kitchen making egg burritos. "Thanks," I said, taking one. "But we gotta go."

"Okay." He wrapped his in a paper towel and followed me down the sidewalk to our bus stop. I'm seventeen, but I don't like driving, so we ride the bus. Sometimes we walk.

The bus pulled up a few minutes later and I climbed up, taking a seat in the back. The ride to the school was about a half an hour because of all the other stops.

We arrived at my high school and piled out, students swarming into the building. I pushed my way through the crowd until I found my locker. Next to it was my best friend, Blaire, and her boyfriend, Carter.

"Hey guys!"

"Oh, hey April!" Carter said.

Blaire looked me up and down, "Did you go on a date? Something seems different."

I nearly choked on my own spit. "No!" Although, I wasn't surprised she asked. She'd been trying to set me up with nearly everyone in this school. But I want to wait for my mate. Only, I can't tell her that. Both she and Carter were human.

When the war ended, werewolves went back to being invisible; whispered about, but never really seen. There were humans out there still searching to catch glimpses, to prove the events seven years ago were real. I didn't think people necessarily stopped believing we exist, I mean it was a huge deal for the entire country! But it was more like the humans didn't really think about us anymore; they moved on and so have we: returning to live in the background of society.

Anyway, I was supposed to be a werewolf like the rest of my family, but when I shifted on my sixteenth birthday, I became a fox instead. A fox for goodness sake!I didn't even know fox shifters existed; no one I knew did! The only people that know I'm a fox are my pack members. Any new wolf that I meet thinks I'm human, and we'd like to keep it that way.

"Well then, what's different?" Blaire pressed, bringing me back to our conversation.

I sighed, knowing I couldn't keep this from her for very long. "Well, the thing is...my family's, um, moving."

"WHAT?!" My friends said simultaniously.

"I know, that's what I said!" I exclaimed. "I just found out yesterday when I got home from school."

"That's so not fair!" Blaire screeched.

"Shhhh, we're still in a hallway! And yeah, I know. But it has to do with my father's business so there's no way of getting out of it."

Before they could say anything else, the bell rang and the hall became incredibly crowded. People shoved one another as they rushed to class; I had no choice but to follow. Being late was not an option for me. "Bye!" I called out over my shoulder as I left, unsure they could even hear me over the noise.

I slid into my seat in Math class, pulling out my textbook and a notebook. I heard someone plop into the chair next to mine.

"Hey, I'm Dillan. Wanna hang out sometime?" He smirked as I glanced over at him.

I rolled my eyes, "One, you've asked me out before. Twice this year actually. And two, I'm moving Friday, so I can't date anyone." I smirked; finally I had an excellent excuse for turning a boy down! I was asked out a lot. And I mean a lot. It's gotten very annoying. Can high school boys not take a hint?

He looked disappointed, "Oh. Okay."

I put my head on my desk. Why did I have to be pretty?

Because, I'm fabulous and that downgrades you to pretty! A voice in my head said.

You're so full of yourself, Scarlet. I replied to my fox.

I know! But you gotta agree with me on this one!

Shut it, you're not helping. Scarlet stopped after that and I just shook my head. She could be quite the character. Sometimes, I swear she was made to be human, not a fox in my head.

When the bell rang, I bolted out of there. A few more classes passed in a blur and then it was gym. I love gym. I think it's because of my fox.

"Okay, class! We're playing dodgeball today!" The gym teacher, Mr. Clark, announced.

I swear, every kid in the class except me groaned. I smiled instead. Sports was a strong suit, thanks to Scarlet and being raised by Werewolves.

But what the teacher said next made my smile drop slightly. "But since someone decided it would be funny to hide all balls from the boy's gym, they have asked to join us. We will be playing boys against girls!" The girls stared, stunned and definitely a little nervous as the boys gym class filed in. Great, just great.

I pulled Blaire up from the bleacher seat, "c'mon! We gotta win this!"

She stared at me, "How? We're going against boys; I suck at sports!"

I glared at her, "Boys do not get to win every time! Plus, my bother's over there and I cannot lose against him!"

She rolled her eyes, "Whatever. We're losing and you already know it."

I growled, but quickly changed it to a cough. "At least put in effort! It'll be fun, c'mon."

She shrugged, muttering a little under her breath. The whistle blew and balls started flying.

Blaire stayed behind me most of the time, using me as her sheild. I picked up a ball, throwing it at August. It missed his leg by an inch. He stuck is tongue out at me before he launched it back.

He missed me by over a foot. I put my hands on my hips, raising my eyebrows with a sassy expression. Wow, and he's supposedly good at sports?

Slap! I shrieked a little as one hit my leg, making me stumble. I looked up to see that Dillan kid smirking. His ball had hit me in the shin. I growled and stomped to the bench in defeat.

"Sorry, Blaire, but you're on your own!" I called over my shoulder. I sat and watched as she crossed her arms over her chest and hunched over as if trying to make herself a smaller target. It seemed to work, though, because she was able to dodge every ball that was thrown at her. "Blaire! You gotta catch one and get me back in!" It was now five against 11; boys were winning. Damn.

The game ended soon, when Dillan knowcked a few girls out and finally Carter was able to land a ball to Blaire's arm, winning the game. I was upset, of course, but mostly at Blair's, who never even tried to catch a ball to get more girls back in the game. We just laughed it off as we went to chug water from the bottles under the benches.

The rest of the school day went pretty smoothly. I got home that afternoon and was immediately sent upstairs to go pack my room up. "We're leaving in fourteen hours and you've barely started!" Mom scolded.

I mumbled something and obeyed, grabbing a few boxes and making my way upstairs.

I packed my clothes first and then my bathroom stuff before emptying my desk and any other things I had around my room.

My mom woke me up at five A.M the following morning. I went to May's room and helped her get dressed and grabbed some of her things for the car.

I went back up, grabbing the last of my boxes and taking one last look at my childhood room. The childish yellow-painted room with flowers. But I didn't care, it was mine, and I had to leave it behind.
