《Healing》Chapter 6

I'm currently sat in Josh's exam room, my knee bouncing out of nerves as Josh looks through my file. "Come here baby" He beckons me over to him. I stand from the chair I was sat on and walk over to him. He pulls me down onto his lap, my side pressed to his front. He rubs soothing circles on my back and I lay my head on his shoulder, my face pressed into his neck.
"You explained before that your anxiety has become pretty bad since being at college?" I nod in confirmation. "Okay, so I was thinking we could try some anxiety medication, after this appointment I will write a prescription and we can go pick it up. What do you think?" He asks as he browses my file on his computer. Huh. That could actually help. Maybe coming here was a good idea. Josh did say he was going to help me and this medicine might actually make me feel better in general.
"Yeah, I'm willing to try anything." I breathe out. "Okay honey, this should help and if it doesn't we can always try something else." He says as he kisses my temple.
"Okay lets get started, yeah baby?" I take a deep breath and just get this over with. He picks me up, walks over to the exam table and gently places me down onto the paper covered bed. "We will do height and weight later, can I start with listening to your heart?" I nod. This is no big deal, I'm just thinking about when I was a child and thought everything was scary. I'm an adult and I can get a physical like everyone else, without a huge fuss.
He unwraps the stethoscope from around his neck and places it in his ears. "This is going to go under your shirt, okay sweetie" He informs me as he warms the bell up with his hand. "Okay" I breathe out. He slips the bell under my shirt and gently places it on my chest and softly holds my arm with his free hand. I feel the cold metal rest against the left side of my chest, on my boob and I inhale from surprise. "Sorry baby, its a little cold." Josh chuckles out and I smile. As my lips curl up into a grin he leans forward and kisses my bottom lip, still listening to my heart. Even from the small gesture my heart speeds up and Josh chuckles again. "Well that got a little reaction." He smiles cheekily and my cheeks flame- probably the reddest he has ever seen them and I move away from the bell.
"Hey, I'm just kidding. I'm sorry. Just relax baby, I'm almost done." Hey says still grinning, I know he isn't sorry, and places the bell back on my chest. We stay quiet for the next two minutes as Josh gently moves the bell around my chest, listening in different areas. He takes the bell off of my chest and smiles. "Healthy heart" he leans in and pecks the tip of my nose "sounds absolutely perfect."

"Can I listen to your lungs?" He asks and I nod cheeks hot. He moves to my side, instead of standing in front of me and holds my shoulder with his free hand, as his hand holding the bell slides under my shirt and rests against my skin. "Take a deep breath for me honey." I do and continue until he is done listening. "Anddd healthy lungs too." He flashes his gorgeous, white smile at me and wraps the stethoscope back around his neck.
"I'm going to feel your neck, just checking your lymph nodes sweetie." He tells me as he tilts my chin up slightly and then places his warm hands on each side of my neck. His fingers are feeling under my jaw and it kind of tickles so I squirm and giggle. "It tickles" I laugh out and he smiles at me. "I'm almost done, try to relax babe, stay still for me." He places his hands back on my neck and feels under my ears, his hands gentle and then he says he is done.
"Okay babe, can I have a look in your mouth? I'm going to use this tongue depressor and a flash light to check your throat." He shows me what he will use and I just nod. I don't really want to do any of this but, Josh was right-it doesn't hurt and I don't feel scared with him so I just do whatever he says for him and his piece of mind. "Open for me angel," I do, "good girl, and stick out your tongue for me- thankyou." He gently places the popsicle stick looking thing on my tongue and shines his penlight in my mouth. "Can you say ahh for me baby?" He asks me after a moment of looking and I do.
"Okay all done, your doing so well angel, now can you just look over my shoulder at the poster please?" I do and look at the poster about women's health when a light is shined in my eye. "Just checking these pretty eyes baby." He looks for a second more and then turns off the penlight. "Beautiful." He smiles and kisses my cheek.
"I'm going to look in your ears now sweetheart." He grabs a weird looking device and places it gently in my ear and holds the side of my face, to keep my head still, with his free hand. As he looks, I squirm- uncomfortable. "Your okay baby, I know it feels a little strange but I'm almost done." He says as he finishes looking in my left ear and mores round to my right one.
"Were almost finished now baby, just a few more things to go now. Should we do height and weight quickly?" I nod and Josh picks up my right foot and takes off my white sandal and does the same with my left. Once both shoes are off, he picks me up and walks over to the scales at the other end of the exam room and places me on them. He get the reading and then takes my height, quickly typing what I presume are the results of my height and weight, in his computer.

He carries me back over to the exam table and grabs a blood pressure cuff. "I'm going to quickly take your blood pressure baby, its going to be a tight squeeze but it will last seconds, okay?" I nod, wanting to get out of here so I can spend the day with Josh. He wraps the cuff around my arm and I feel it start to inflate and tighten around my arm, at one point it got pretty tight and I looked at Josh panicked. "Shh, don't panic angel, see its deflating now, you did so well." He quickly removes the cuff from my arm and brings me into a hug. My face rests against his neck and we are chest to chest. The soothing back rubs return and I sigh in relief, just being in Josh's hold.
Once he has calmed me down he pulls away slightly, arms still around me. "You okay sweetie?" He pecks my lips. "Yeah, I just didn't like how tight it was- I'm okay." I nod to ensure him I'm fine-ugh, I'm such a drama queen. "I know, I'm sorry baby. That's done now, I'm going to check your stomach and then we have one thing left, we can leave after that." He pushes the baby hairs off my face. I agree, just so I can get out of here faster.
"Can you lie down for me sweetheart?" I do as he says and he lifts my shirt and gently feels my tummy in different areas. "Good girl." He leans down and kisses my bottom lip, then pulls me back into a sitting position. "One last thing, then we can go, okay angel?" I nod. "I need to give you a little shot, nothing to worry about, it will take two seconds." He rubs my upper left arm and I sag. Honestly I saw this coming, cant not go to the doctor for three years and then not need any shots. I missed a lot of shots when I was in school, because I never went to get them. I know Josh will be gentle and he is probably the best person to do them.
"I hate shots." I groan, starting to freak myself out. "There's nothing to be scared of sweetheart, I'll be so gentle, it will just be a little pinch." He says as he grabs a pair of latex gloves and a tray I didn't notice, with what I think has the needle on. "I'm going to do it in your left arm, sweetie" he says as he rubs it with a wipe, the tray next to me on the bed, covered by a paper towel. His gloved hand gently grasps my chin and turns it towards the right, and I feel my eyes start to water out of fear. He holds my left upper arm. "Relax your arm honey, its okay, don't be scared, I'm really good at giving shots it will be a tiny scratch- that's it relax baby." His thumb rubs back and forth on the arm he is holding as he speaks and my arm relaxes on its own accord.
Then I feel a very sharp pinch, that lasts less than three seconds and then I feel Josh press a cotton ball against my arm. "All done baby. You were so brave, I'm so proud of you cutie." He wipes the single tear that slipped down my face and pulls me into a hug, very careful of my arm, and pecks my lips multiple times. I smile into his chest-happy its over and done with. "I'm going to put a little band aid on your arm honey." He says as his gloved hands grab a band aid and gently sticks to my sore, achy arm.
"Its sore." I say quietly, turning my head to look down at my arm. He gently rubs it. "I know honey, it will be for today and maybe tomorrow but I can put some numbing cream on there, it will make it feel better." He kisses the side of my head and I nod. "Yes please." Straight away he grabs a small tube of cream, his gloved fingers remove the band aid, gently smothers the area in the numbing cream and kisses me once he has re-applied a new band aid. "All done." He smiles at me stroking my sore arm.
"I'm just going to grab your prescription and quickly update your file and then we can go grab some lunch, anywhere you want to go we can go." Josh tells at me as he picks me up and walks over to his computer- I sit on his lap as he types. "You ready to go sweetie?" He asks as he grabs a piece of paper, I think its my prescription. "Defiantly!" I nod enthusiastically. He laughs at me and we leave the hospital.
