《The Monster Inside ➺ Scott. M》Chapter 20

Rebekah was at the Salvatores mansion, reading Stefan's diary on his bed.

"Look, we're at a bit of disadvantage in this whole race for the cure." Rebekah told him as she put his diary down and walked towards him. "Team Klaus has Jeremy the hunter and Astrid and team Shane has Bonnie the witch."

"If you're here to remind me of our last place status, I'm very well aware. Also, I don't think Astrid cares about the cure. Apparently she came here only for two or three weeks and she's already been here for two. I'm sure she'll leave soon." Stefan told Rebekah.

"1) Maybe she did come here for a few weeks but if Klaus calls her, telling her he needs her help, she will arrive as soon as she can. And believe me, together, they are invincible. Especially when Astrid reveals her psychopathic side.

2) I have a plan. The cure is buried with Silas, that ancient evil gut my brother Kol is afraid of. Shane was so eager to prove his existence that he gave away that he has one of the keys to resurrect him, his headstone."

"I see. You want to steal it."

"Yes. And then team Shane will join team Rebekah, and team Klaus will be left out in the cold where he belongs."

"What if Astrid does come back to help him get the cure. What then?"

"As much as I love my sister, I don't want her getting in the way of me getting the cure. We'll have to eliminate her. Of course, we won't kill her but we can... I don't know, rip her heart out and bury her so that she won't interfere. She can't really help Niklaus if she can't move her body..."

-------

Astrid entered a bar where the vampires were supposed to be. Instead of finding vampires, she saw blood on the ground. She followed the blood and soon heard Kol speak. "I confess. I did it."

"Kol." Jeremy said, surprised.

"Jeremy, good to see you, mate" Kol replied. "Sorry about the mess. It was a little crowded when I arrived, and I prefer more intimate gatherings. We 3 need to have a little chat."

Astrid walked inside the room frustrated as the three looked at her.

"Sister, didn't know you're joining." Kol smiled innocently.

"Well, Klaus sent me here to check if Jeremy was doing his job but instead I find a pile of dead vampirs killed by you. Bloody hell, brother. Can you stop yourself from killing everyone at least once in your pathetic life?" She shouted at her older brother. She took a deep breath and looked up at Damon. "hello Damon, Jeremy. Since I'm already here I guess I'll listen to what my stupid brother has to say."

"Actually, I wanted to talk with Damon and Jeremy alone."

"Well frankly, brother, I don't care."

"Alright then. My brother bragged about this plan to complete Jeremy's hunter's mark. It was easy enough to track them lot down. They were all hiding in the shadows. Now killing young vampires is easy or old ones for that matter." Kol told Damon.

"Why?" Damon asked "what's it to you either way?"

"Because, you fools, in your zeal to find the cure, you risk waking someone very dangerous." Lol answered.

"Oh. You must be talking about Silas." Damon said.

"What do you know of him?"

"Nothing. Don't want to. Not our problem."

"Isn't it?" Kol asked and Damon shook his head. "A few hundred years back, I came across a group that worshipped Silas. His followers told me that he would rise again, and when he did, he would trigger the end of all time. You know, being an immortal, you can see why I'm opposed to time's ending. I murdered all of them, and now here you are willing to risk raising him in your search for the cure. I can't exactly sit back and let that happen, can I?"

"We're not gonna back off the cure because you were told one too many scary bedtime stories, you idiot" Damon told Kol and Astrid laughed quietly.

"Jeremy, we were mates in Colorado." Kol said to Jeremy "You're a smart lad. Why don't you call off this imbecilic treasure hunt?"

"I'm not calling anything off, mate." Jeremy told Kol, mocking his accent.

"Well, I could kill you" Kol said.

"But you're not going to. And we both know why" Astrid told her brother.

"Yes. Because then I'd have to deal with the Hunter's curse, and I... I don't particularly feel like being haunted for the next century." Kol snapped his fingers "better idea. I'll just rip off your arms."

"No, you're not" Astrid told Kol, grabbing his arm.

"And why is that, sister?" Kol asked her.

"Because Klaus won't like it." Astrid answered.

"Right, I forgot you'll never go against your precious brother. Well, I'm your brother too and you went against me many times."

"It's different with Klaus and you know it. I don't want him to hate me because I let you rip off some hunter's arms. Understand?"

"Oh yeah... I forgot that Klaus is like Jesus to you and you're his disciple" Kol said, starting to walk away.

"I'm not his follower." Astrid replied. "I just don't want Klaus to kill you for going against him. We know that you would end up far worse than me. He would forgive me pretty quick, he would forgive you too but, well, it would take longer. Maybe a few centuries. With you stuck in a box and dagger in your heart."

--------

"No tombstone" Stefan told Rebekah as they looked through Shane's stuff.

"We'll find it. You're all bottled up." Rebekah sighed. "You need a release. Maybe we can find you a voodoo doll or something." Rebekah looked into one of his drawers and found a bottle with herbs. "Ah. This should do the trick." Rebekah told Stefan as she picked it up. "Exactly what you need." She walked towards Stefan and showed him the bottle. "The professor's stash of herbs."

"Not interested" Stefan told her.

"What happened to you? You were so much fun in the twenties."

"I was a psychotic killer with no emotions in the 1920s."

"You may have been a killer, but you were far from emotionless, Stefan. You had a blast. I know you remember. The jazz, the booze, our little table at Gloria's. Don't make me compel it out of you."

"Alright" Stefan sighed "um... I guess we had a little bit of fun."

"Thank you" Rebekah nodded her head "so now that we've established that fun is, in fact, possible, maybe you'd like to start having some. Don't worry about the professor. He won't be back anytime soon. I made sure of that."

Stefan took the herbs from Rebekah, staring at her as she smiled sweetly.

--------

"Bit ironic coming to me for help" Klaus told Elena, Astrid sitting next to him. "Weren't your friends just trying to bury me in a cement tomb?"

"This is your fault." Elena answered "You started this when you forced Jeremy to kill those vampires."

"And my little brat of a brother has gone and made this worse."

"Honestly, If I knew Kol would go back there and attack them after I left, i would have done something" Astrid told her brother, smiling apologetically.

"It's not your fault, sister. Apparently it's mine. Well, Kol never did like Damon. I suppose I should do something, shouldn't I?"

"Call him off, Klaus" Elena told the hybrid.

"You are in no position to make demands, love. Whilst I'd like to cure you to make more hybrids, I do have other reasons for finding the cure, not the least of which is destroying it so you lot can't use it against me."

"Whatever our differences, we want the same thing. Please. Klaus, I'm begging you." Elena begged. Klaus smiled at her and took out his phone from his jacket pocket.

"Little brother." Klaus said over the phone. "Just two days home, and I'm told you've already gone and made a mess."

"What, did Astrid complain?" Kol laughed. "Come on, Nik. I was just having some fun."

"Not Astrid... Elena did. Those vampires were for my hunter."

"I'll make some more. There's no shortage of people."

"Where's Damon Salvatore?"

"I gave him a good and proper beating... just for old time's sake."

"Yes. Well, you've had your fun. Now let him go and come home. Avoid any more trouble, or you'll find yourself back in a box."

"Told you" Astrid muttered.

"Hey. No need to be nasty about it" Kol replied.

"On the contrary, I find nastiness to be essential whenever my siblings try to sabotage me. Listen closely, Kol. Stay away from the Gilbert boy. Understand?"

"Don't rip his arms off, either" Astrid said, knowing that Kol could hear her.

"Fine" Kol said. "I won't touch him. You have my word."

-------

"You're not going to remember what I say" Kol compelled Damon. "You're going to find Jeremy Gilbert, and you're going to kill him."

-------

"So much crap in here" Stefan complained as he walked around in Shane's office.

"Crap, Maybe. Random, no." Rebekah replied. "Looks like Shane has a bit of afterlife fetish. Hopi prayer feathers, the Han dynasty, soul vase, and that is a Polynesian sacrificial knife. Brutal way to die bit at least you appease the Gods."

"Since when did you become such an artefact expert?" Stefan asked, holding the sacrificial knife.

"I enjoy other cultures, Stefan. I know that might be hard for you to understand considering you dated a child who only thinks about herself."

Stefan threw the knife at Rebekah but she caught it just before it stabbed her in the face. She chuckled. "Still a sensitive subject, I see." Rebekah said, standing up from a chair. "Do you know why I wouldn't compel Elena from your memory?"

"Because you wanted me to suffer."

"I did. It's the only way you'll learn. It took me a thousand years and hundreds of betrayals to realise that love, caring ruins you."

"Hmm. That's awfully bleak."

"Quite the opposite. It's liberating actually." Rebekah pressed the point of the knife to stefan's shoulder. "You know why we had so much fun in the twenties, Stefan? Because we didn't care. We just did what felt good... drinking, feeding, sex."

"The sex wasn't good because we didn't care. It was good because you're crazy. Crazy sex is always good."

"You were hardly a model of sanity." Stefan grabbed Rebekah' s arm and moved it away. "Stop... caring." Rebekah dropped the knife and they disappeared before anyone entered the room.

A man entered the room and was looking through the drawers, searching for the tombstone. He moved a piece of wood and the headstone was laying there.

"Good, you found it." Rebekah said as she grabbed his neck. "Question is who are you?

--------

"He was going to kill me" Rebekah complained to Nik after Kol tried stabbing her with the white oak stake.

"Well, then, I think you need a lesson in how to properly dagger a sibling." Klaus told her.

"Burn in hell" Rebekah said, anger in her voice.

"I'm sure every Mikaelson has a place booked in hell" Astrid laughed, leaning on Klaus as Rebekah left the room, slamming the door after she left.

------

"Good evening, Gilbert clan" Klaus said when Elena opened the front door of her house.

"What do you want?" Elena asked.

"I've come to fetch my hunter. Seeing as how my brother's become a liability, Jeremy will be safer with me."

"I think I'll pass" Jeremy told Niklaus. "I've killed enough people for you today."

"You think you're safer here? Hmm. Clearly you don't know Kol. He'll stop at nothing to get what he wants, so strange as it may seem, I'm your best bet."

"Sorry, but I think we'd rather take our chances" Elena told Klaus.

"Fine, but when Kol does come... and he will come, be sure to let me know, preferably before he burns your nice little home to the ground. And as for you, hunter, there's no shortage of people to turn and loved ones to threaten, so sleep well. We'll plan on finishing our work tomorrow." Klaus added before leaving.

------

Stefan woke up the next day, naked with Rebekah. Her hand resting lazily on his torso. He moved her hand off of him and sped to his clothes, putting them on.

He opened the door of her bedroom and saw Nik.

"Leaving so soon?" Niklaus asked.

---------

"Look, Rebekah, I apologise for breaking up this sordid little tryst," Klaus said as he walked inside Rebekah's room. Rebekah was now up and standing next to Stefan. "But I do have some urgent business. Or have you forgotten that our paranoid brother Kol is running around with a white oak stake and homicide on the brain?"

"He tried to kill me last night." Rebekah replied. "I didn't forget."

"Yes. Well, unfortunately," Klaus continued "He seems to have absconded with my set of daggers."

"Oh, poor Nik. However will you get away without your precious daggers? They were so handy when you wanted to end a conversation with one of us."

"Kol's irrational fear of Silas has pushed him off the edge. We need to put him down before he does any more damage. Now, I know you have the last dagger, and I know you have some white ash, so hand it over."

Rebekah chuckled at the request. "Hmm. And leave myself unprotected? You can file that request under 'no chance in hell'. Be gone by the time I've showered. Lurkers aren't welcome here." She said, walking away from the two men.

"I need that dagger, Stefan" Klaus told the vampire, walking towards him. "Talk some sense into her."

"Why don't you talk some sense into her?" Stefan chuckled. "I'm headed home to play prison guard to Damon. He's on lockdown ever since Kol compelled him to kill Jeremy last night."

"You see? That's my point exactly. If you let Kol run free, then Jeremy won't live to see his junior prom, and we can kiss our map to the cure goodbye. But if you help me dagger Kol, Damon will be uncompelled, Jeremy will live and we'll all be on our merry way to a human Elena."

--------

Klaus and Astrid walked towards the cell with Damon inside.

"Hello, mate." Klaus said.

"Oh, hi Astrid." Damon smiled at Astrid weakly and then turned to Klaus. "What the hell are you doing here?"

"Babysitting." Klaus replied.

"Oh."

"I give him a vial of blood every couple of hours" Stefan said. "So he doesn't dessicate. If he gets too much strength back or if he just annoys you, bleed him out again."

"Silent treatment, huh?" Damon said to his brother. "Is that your best shot? He's still pissed at me for sleeping with Elena."

"Are you sure about that?" Klaus asked "Because I caught him trying to sneak out of Rebekah's bed this morning, which would suggest to me that he's moved on."

"Well, well" Damon said. "Looks like my brother ripped out a page of my revenge sex handbook."

"Well, why don't you three enjoy your little, uh, villain bonding time? I'll let you know when I get the dagger from Rebekah." Stefan told Klaus as he began walking away.

"Be careful out there, Stefan. Someone added vervain to the water." Astrid told the vampire.
