V? That you? The bright, glowing fog of the spiritual plane floods Jack’s view.
“That’s right.”
Vardin is still just a voice, and the sound is softer than Jack remembers. There’s no shadow or anything to go with that voice. In fact, there don’t seem to be any shadows or spirits at all. Something’s different.
“You noticed, didja? Never saw them nuggets that excited.”
Jack finds his sense of awareness coming back to him, like he’s just now remembering everything that happened a few seconds ago. At least, he thinks it was only a few seconds ago.
Am I dead?
“I think, kiddo, that’s up to you. You put on an awfully good show out there. You’ve done more in your short time than most folks will ever do with theirs. No one would think less of you if you called it a day.”
I have a choice?
“Sure you do. But only one. We only ever have one choice, Jack. It’s the same choice no matter what we do. And we make that choice over and over again. Every time we pull air in our lungs. Every time our hearts beat.”
Why are you still here?
“To be honest … I ain’t for long. I just needed one last word with ya, whatever you choose.”
I can’t just stay here with you?
“Heh heh.” The old man’s voice croaks with laughter. “This place was never meant for permanent storage. More like a holding warehouse, as best as I can figure. So no. Stickin’ around isn’t an option. Not for either of us.”
What about the others? Corva, Zeke, Lyia … everyone?
“All I know is that they ain’t here, but that don’t mean they didn’t come through. But there’s only one way to know for certain.”

The choice.
“Yeah. And really, it comes down to one question.”
What’s that?
“Are you done?”
Jack knows the answer, but doesn’t think it out loud. It’s a more difficult question than it ought to be. Both possible answers to the question are short, but neither is really easy. Each one pulls a planet of gravity along with it.
Vardin already knows Jack’s answer, too. Jack isn’t sure how, but he knows the old man’s presence is fading.
“I’m proud of you, kiddo.”

Re: Dragonize
After an unexpected turn of events, Drew must now survive in a world full of challenges with life-or-death stakes. Gone are the days when the biggest problems to face were awkward small-talk at physics department luncheons or mountains of lab work; this former physicist is now adrift in an unfamiliar land without any equipment. Now, Drew's only tool (if it can be called that) is a System, which provides constant reminders of all of the things that are still out of reach for a low-level being who's just arrived in a new world. Luckily, Drew has one powerful asset when taking on the challenges of this new world: surviving violent conflict is a lot easier when you have the power of a dragon at your disposal. Still, Drew has always considered violence a last resort. Why turn to fists (or claws) when a bit of quiet consideration might expose a better path forward? Maybe a life of quiet contemplation is still within reach for this former academic researcher. ...Or maybe not. It probably won't be a life of bloodless pacifism. Additional information for those who wish to calibrate their expectations (I'm adding this based on a few comments I received from readers who feel that the story is not what they expected from a dragon-themed story): Re: Dragonize is not a power fantasy -- or at least, it's not intended to be one. Re: Dragonize is a progression fantasy starting with a protagonist who must start at the bottom (or close to it), and work gradually upwards, making incremental progress with plenty of setbacks along the way. The protagonist, as someone coming from the world of academia, tends to be cautious, methodical, and contemplative. As such, expect this story to contain more than a few digressions as the main character takes the time to pontificate on a variety of topics ranging from Newtonian physics and horology to the nature of existence and the ethical dilemmas associated with being an obligate carnivore.

8 129unit: NO NAME
Humanity was on the brink of extinction due to the unexplained appearances of 'Cryptids.' Amidst the chaos of never-ending slaughter, a beacon of hope appeared for humanity, 'Phenomena.' Phenomena are unexplained abilities that were given to half of the people around the globe, though how they emerge are unknown. Despite the different kinds of Phenomena that humanity gained, it still wasn't enough to drive the terrifying Cryptids away from the face of the earth. It's the year 3000. All of the modern civilizations that stood on the ground have collapsed, and many kinds of Cryptids are roaming the land. But, due to a type of Phenomenon called 'Eden's garden,' three cities were formed floating in the sky that gave humanity the chance to rest and develop for the past years. Mechanica, Cybertown, and Gearmany were floating at different locations. Cybertown. A city filled with many people and buildings that even the streets can't fit a car is where Aki, our main protagonist, and his unit, will start their adventure to save the remaining people from a crisis.

8 106Blue Mage Strives for the Level Cap! Adapt!
After being invited to participate in the Beta run of a new Full-Immersion Virtual Reality RPG, Ardacen Winters and 1999 others learn that it is also a race to reach the level cap of one hundred. The prizes are grand, but the chance to be the first players in this new game might be worth more than the prizes themselves. This is a Lit-RPG, a humble homage to all the others who precede it and hopefully an inspiration to anyone with a story in their own head that needs to be shared.
