Ivan couldn't believe his own luck. He found a flowing river and a cave nearby several meters to the west. With this he cleared two of three most important things in survival: water and shelter. Might as well make the cave his base camp for the time being until he got stronger enough to leave.
But first he needed to wash the intestines...
He took out the burlap sack and filled it with water and began his task. Since he would later eat the intestines, he cleaned every nook and cranny, making sure every wastes were disposed and every part squeaky clean, even the lungs.
He drooled as he imagined delicious, crunchy deep fry lungs MFC-style. Deep fried tripe was great, too! Now add some rice to that and everything would be perfect.
After making sure everything was clean, Ivan put it back in his inventory and washed himself. The water was cold and fresh. He felt alive after taking a quick bath. Thankfully the water was safe.
He started looking for suitable branches for makeshift spit as well as foraging edible food. Of course he didn't forget his own safety and didn't wander too far from his base.
He heaved a sigh as he deposited the heavy burden on the makeshift campfire spot. Thanks to his basic survival skill, he knew how to make a campfire. Since he had no proper digging tool, he had to make do with a sturdy branch. It was slow, but he felt it was better than digging with his bare hands.
He made a fire ring with nearby stones and set the branches. Thanks to his lighter, he easily lit a fire.
For a moment, he let his gaze sit towards the dancing fire and silently appreciated the warmth and the feeling of safety, even if it was but a placebo effect in this dangerous forest.

A bonfire gave you a sense of safety and comfort after being stranded, no? Yet once it was extinguised, those feeling disappeared along with it. He believed the bonfire was giving him a placebo effect of being safe and secure.
But still, he welcomed those feelings. In fact, he needed the feeling of being safe more than ever. The reassurance prevented him for going crazy.
His stomach growling once dragged him to reality.
Since making a makeshift spit would take time and he was too hungry to do anything strenous, Ivan took out a chunk of meat and just fried it over the fire. It was regrettable that he didn't have any salt or other seasonings.
Well, miser can't be chooser.
He felt a sense of pride of cooking his own food in the open. Despite being athletic, he was never been the outdoorsman. The action of foraging and cooking in the wild were seen through a smartphone screen. Now that he finally had his first experience, it felt great. Why didn't he do this sooner?
Just by looking at his first camping meal, the hunger came back. He waste no time to gobble his meal, but he stopped chewing several minutes later.
Damn, this meat is tough.
That meme about well-done steak was right. It was as if he was munching on a mat. Or maybe he cooked it wrong that it turned out too hard to chew?
Ding!

Ivan jumped in shock at the sudden noise and turned his head towards the source of sound. A window popped on his right, read...

Ghostified City
‘Ghostified City’ is a post-dystopian sci-fi tale, set in a fading world that might be a future version of ours, running out on autopilot into oblivion. Adaman Yimmand is a simple robofactory operator in The City who's working with robots and machines every day. He doesn’t even realise that he might not have met another actual human being in years. Everything begins when he breaks his routine for once and enters a bar where he meets Evelith. This pesky other person does not let him go after he has had his -rather terrible- beer, because according to her actual humans are much rarer than he’s aware of. And from then on ‘the genie is out of the bottle and won’t get back in’, to use her words: Adaman meets more people, and gradually he has no choice but to accept that the reality of The City is not what he always thought it was, and to face the darkness of a fading humanity on the brink of self-inflicted extinction. Is there any hope left for him, and for his species? I have selected 'sexual content' and 'traumatising content' to be on the safe side, because there is a stripclub-like venue in the background of the story, and an almost-extinct humanity that has institutionalised suicide which might be disturbing to some. Apart from that it's not really a heavy 'adult' story.('Ghostified City' is my first long story in English as opposed to my native language Dutch, and an earlier version was published on my fiction blog 'Oranderra' until I stopped updating. This is a slightly altered version of the first series.)
