《Multiversal Dungeon of the System》6 – Attack

Seeing the army of Metal Golems worried me.
I did not know if the Town could defend against such an attack, and if they couldn't, where would the Golems head to next?
While I may no longer be Human, I still have my morals. So how could I just sit by and watch so many poor souls just trying to live get slaughtered before my eyes?
What if children and families were living inside those walls?
Looking toward the guards on top of the walls, I could see they were petrified of the army marching towards them, but I could also see that they didn't back down...like they had something to protect behind the wall.
And if I knew Humanity, the most likely reason for them to show such bravery in the face of such a terrifying force would be because they were either defending something they cared enough about to die for, or this was their last stand, and they had nothing left.
Neither of which were any good...
'God damn it...my morals and the fact that they may be the only ones close by to delve my Dungeon is making this difficult to ignore!'
'Fine...fuck it, I just hope I don't lose too much because of this. Besides, if the Golem Army can find me, I would prefer to deal a blow while they are distracted.'
Due to the sheer difference in strength between the Golem army and my Dungeon Monsters, the best thing I could do was either distract them or guerrilla warfare.
Seemingly knowing the number of Golems by just looking at the army, I knew 215 Golems were approaching the city's walls, where I could see the City Guards preparing themselves for battle.
I could see that most were now standing outside the walls in front of the gate and readying themselves to fight.
Those not outside the gate were on the walls with Guns and what looked to be...artillery?
I mean, it looked to be some old ww1 mortars from a museum, but it didn't ease my worry for the city by much, seeing that they seemed to only had a few shells to use against the Golem Army.
It seemed the Golem army would arrive in a few minutes at the slow pace they were working, which should give me enough time to get my Monsters over there.
[Meanwhile, in the city]
"God damn it!" A man yelled angrily in a small stone brick room where a few others stood.
"This is the second attack this month! The Dungeon is growing in strength. If we don't do anything about it, we will be overrun next month!" Shouted a man clad in scrap and sports gear armor with an old M16 Rifle on his back that's been duct-taped together and repaired from what little supplies the city had due to the seemingly constant use of the old weapon.
"Calm down, Captain Titus. We know our situation is becoming direr with each raid, but what else are we to do? You know we don't have the necessary supplies or manpower to take down the Dungeon even though we know where it is!" Replied a regal man wearing more luxurious clothing than the rest in the room.

"Please, Mayor, if we continue to stay on the defensive, we will all die to the Dungeon eventually! Let me and my men take some supplies, delve into the Dungeon, and find its core!" Yelled the only Female Captain in the room who wore scrap armor to cover her vitals and leather to protect her everywhere else.
"We've been over this, Captain Isabel! If we lose one of you, it can jeopardize the whole city!" Replied the Mayor. "We have only four captains, and each of you defends a wall. If even one of you were to leave the city, one of the walls would be undefended, giving that Dungeon the opportunity to get into the city!"
"But Mayor!"
"No! That's an order! I will not lose one of my few Guard Captains and risk the city!"
'We all know that the only reason you want us to stay and defend the city is so that you have enough time to gather your shit and run away while the city burns behind you, corrupt pig!' Captain Isabel thought furiously while glaring at the overweight Mayor.
Suddenly, rushing in, one of the city guards yelled, "They're almost here! They'll reach the gate soon!"
Rushing out of the small stone room that acted as a counsel room, the four Guard Captains rushed for the southern gate while the Mayor rushed towards his home.
When the four Guard Captains reached the southern gate, they could see the approaching Golem Amry that was slightly larger than the last army the Dungeon attacked the city with.
However, something that the Guard Captains were thankful for was that the Golems still did not use any ranged weaponry, and their bodies were made from a brittle metal that was easily breakable and piercable by the Iron weapons of the city.
The Golems also had a fatal weakness, they were incredibly dumb and slow...
They recklessly charged into traps, and attacks and never dodged, allowing the Guards of the city to take down a Golem quickly.
At first, the attacks started with only a dozen Golems made of Stone, but over time the Golems became stronger and were made of increasingly better materials.
With each attack, the army also increased in number. Captain Isabel feared that due to the increased production of the Golems that the Dungeon used to attack their city constantly, they would eventually be overwhelmed by the sheer number of Golems the Dungeon would send to attack the city.
Each Guard Captain was equipped with a Melee weapon made from Iron by the city's blacksmith and had a rifle and sidearm.
For Captain Isabel, she had an M1 Garand on her back, an old pistol on her side, and a short sword on her other side.
Due to the shortage of ammunition, the city had, with none being scavenged or traded for in a while, the Guards had to make their shots count with what little ammunition they had.
For example, Captain Isabel had only a couple of stripper clips for her rifle and two magazines for her sidearm.
They didn't have the necessary facilities or resources to make more ammunition, and with the local area mostly picked clean of anything valuable and Trade caravans being an infrequent occurrence due to the remote location of the scrap city, the city couldn't trade for more ammunition.

And with the city's dwindling supplies, this would probably be the last battle in which they had ammunition to dwindle the numbers of the Golems before they reached the gate.
The Captains knew that with this fight, many guards would lose their lives since the guards would have to take the golems on in close combat because the city couldn't afford a siege and Golems getting inside the city.
Looking at the rapidly approaching army of Golems, everyone got into position with the Guard Captains moving to the front line.
"Fire the mortars! Aim for the center of the army!" Shouted one of the Guard Captains to the men on the walls with the mortars.
Immediately after, loud thumps sounded from the walls as the mortars let loose their first shells into the army.
Within moments loud explosions echoed from the center of the Golem Army as two dozen Golems were blown apart.
But it seemed the Golems did not care, as they continued to march forward, directly over the craters and the remains of their brethren.
"Fire the mortars again!"
Another round of explosions occurred as more Golems were taken down, but even then, the army continued without care towards the city.
"Marksmen, fire!"
At the command of one of the Guard Captains, the Guards on the walls with rifles began firing into the army of Golems, guaranteed to hit one of them due to their seemingly disorganized formation.
After the Marksmen fired a couple more times and reduced the number of Golems even further, the Guard Captains shouted, "Charge!"
Due to the city's efforts, the original 215 Golems dropped to around 130 Golems, and now even though the Guards now outnumbered the Golems, the Golems were still too strong.
Multiple guards attacked each Golem left in the army, but all it took was for a single hit from a Golem to kill a guard, and with the Golem's arms shaped to be blunt and sharp, the Golems began massacring the guards.
Seeing the carnage, the Guard Captains focused on these irregular Golems to minimize the casualties from this battle.
Soon the Guard Captains took care of these irregular Golems that were much more lethal than their predecessors and began helping the other Guards take down their golems.
Just as hope began to rise at the thought of beating the enemy, the Guards heard the sound of marching in the distance. Golem reinforcements seemed to show themselves as they joined in the fight.
Of the original 300 Guards fighting the Golems in close-quarter combat, only 180 remained, and with the reinforcements, the Guards feared that this would be the day they and everyone they cared about died, and their city fell.
The reinforcements consisted of 50 more Golems, with a few of the Irregular Golems in the reinforcements.
Letting the Guards continue to fight the original army of Golems, the Guard Captains cleared from the fighting. They began firing at the reinforcements with the remaining ammo, slowing them down and taking a few out in the process.
When the Captains ran out of ammo, they switched to their firearms, if they had one, or their melee weapons, and charged at the reinforcements.
Meanwhile, the original army was reduced to less than 80 golems, and the Guards were reduced to 120.
But while humans tire as they are mortal, the Golems did not and started to gain an advantage over the ordinary human guards.
Seeing the Golems gain the upper hand, the hope of surviving this battle extinguished, and despair took hold of the Guards.
And in the next moment, dashing out from dilapidated buildings, came a small group of giant ants and...abominations.
The Guards that gazed at abominations felt a petrifying fear, while the veterans and captains of the guards were able to resist the aura the abominations gave off.
The strange creatures lunged into battle and swarmed over the nearest Golems, pinning them down and finishing them off before they could even struggle.
And just as one of the Captains was about to be felled in battle, four Horned Rabbits dashed into the combat, knocking the Golem off its feet and onto the ground where an Ant quickly exploited the Golem's weakness and crushed the Golem's skull with its mandibles.
But even then, the Golem still functioned but was blind now that its 'eyes' were destroyed along with its head.
Tearing into the Golem's chest, the ants found that the Golems had a fatal weakness. They had a core at the center of its chest where a heart would be, and if this core was destroyed, the Golem ceased functioning.
Although the first couple of Golems ceased functioning merely due to luck, now that the Ants knew the Golem's weakness, they began fully exploiting it.
The Ants ruthlessly began tearing apart the Golems nearest them, with two or three ants attacking each Golem.
Meanwhile, the Abominations, led by a paler abomination, all worked together to take down a single Golem at a time.
Although the Captains thought the Monster would have taken the opportunity to kill the downed Captain, to their surprise, the Monsters ignored the man and kept attacking the Golems as if they had a vendetta.
With the new Monster's help, the Guards slowly killed the Golems one by one until eventually, they were all dead, leaving the Guards and the unknown Monsters.
Still, on guard, the Guards were surprised when all of the Monsters stood there waiting until one of the Ants stepped forward with a stone slab in its mouth and approached Captain Isabel, who was covered in bruises and seemed to be on the brink of collapse.
Stopping just in front of the Captain, the Ant raised its head and waited for Captain Isabel to grab the slab.
For a minute, no one knew what to do until Captain Isabel cautiously grabbed the slab and looked at it.
'You're welcome. Do you happen to know the location of the Dungeon that attacked your city by chance? If so, do you mind telling my lovely Monsters before you? If you share this information with me, I promise that I will take care of the Dungeon for you - A friend.'
