《Facade》Chapter 4: Call To Arms

"Older men declare war. But it is youth that must fight and die."
― Herbert Hoover
The moon shone down on the city, which was in a state of tranquil peace. The occasional owl hooting could be heard, but besides from that, it was mostly quiet.
Then suddenly an alarm rang in the academy, waking up all the cadets including Ajax and Alaric.
If that wasn't enough, their door was busted open as guards came in and dragged them out. They quickly made them stand up as they were hauled off to the barracks. "Really now? I need my beauty sleep" Ajax replied as he tried to sound angry, but failed to do to him yawning.
Alaric, on the other hand, looked annoyed as they were pushed into what seemed to be a briefing room along with the other cadets of the grunt class. A captain stood in front of them as he had a solemn expression as he cleared his throat.
"Due to some recent events, you have been called to the battlefield. Your main objective is to buy time till the main forces arrive, and do to the danger involved you will be promoted once you get back.....if you come back that is."
The captain muttered the last part under his breath as he motioned to the guards. "You have no say in this matter, your gear will be on the ship, good luck kids."
And with that, they were hauled off, now to the docking bay. Alaric was fuming turning to Ajax, "Can they really do this? They're sending us to our deaths!" Ajax still yawned, raising an eyebrow at Alaric, "You know Alaric, might is right, nothing we can do about it since we are weak."
Alaric was shocked by his answer as he kept quiet. They were pushed into the ship as it closed behind them, the interior lights now turning on.

The light shone on the standard gear of the army, a lightweight suit of armor along with a sword and gun.
The gun itself was more of an emergency/just in case type weapon do to the bullets not really being able to pierce through the armor like the swords. Alaric stepped into the suit as he winced as it bit down into his skin as the armor adjusted itself.
He breathed slowly as he put the helmet on along with strapping the sword, which was a matte black color, to his waist. He loaded the gun and strapped it to his leg as he checked over his gear one last time like he was taught in class.
He then sat down, taking deep breaths as he strapped himself to the seat, waiting for the ship to take off. He was drifting off when he felt someone hit him lightly, causing him to turn as he saw someone waving at him.
"Hey Alaric, how does the suit feel?" "Strange I guess, but I guess I'm getting used to it."
"Why do you always have to answer my questions seriously? Jeez, you're no fun, no wonder you can't get a lover."
"What is that supposed to mean?"
"Nothing.." Ajax giggled, turning back to stare towards the front of the ship. Alaric smiled under his helmet, realizing his friend was probably trying to help him relax. He let out a chuckle, wiggling his fingers before clutching them as he closed his eyes again. He opened them again, soon realizing some unknown time had passed as he yawned, looking around the ship.
Along with him and Ajax, there were about 30-60 other cadets also joining them in this operation, although only 8 others were on this ship, totaling to an amount of 10. One of the cadets turned to Alaric, tapping his arm as he asked in a quivering voice. "D-do you think we will be able to return?"

He sat there silent for a moment as he took in his meaning. He then moved his hand and patted the other cadets' helmet, "Honestly? Probably not, but in times like these aren't we supposed to believe in hope? If there's one thing we humans are good at, it's having hope in the dire of situations and coming up with ways to prevail, this time is no different."
He couldn't see it, but he thought he saw the cadets eyes widen as he nodded. "I-i see, you're right! T-thanks, by the way, I'm Lein, and you are?" "Alaric." He replied, short but it was all he needed to say.
"T-thank you, I'll be sure to remember that. After this let's hang out together." Lein said, seeming to smile under his helmet as he scratched the side of it embarrassedly. In that moment, even Alaric was surprised. He even managed me to believe that we could get out of this, even if it was just for a moment.
"I-is that a no?" Lein said, seeming down. Alaric was knocked out of his stupor by this as he laughed, smiling even brighter.
"Sure, why not." Lein nodded, looking up as he sighed in relief.
"I retract my statement from earlier, even if you can't get girls, you can get guys," Ajax said as he leaned over to Alaric, having heard the whole conversation from earlier. Alaric stopped, turning to Ajax as he silently stared at him before hitting him on the back of the head.
"Shut it you idiot, what nonsense are you spouting?" "Aww, don't be like that, you know I won't judge you.....possibly....maybe......fine, I would judge you, but only because you're my friend." Ajax, laughed, leaning back as he put his hands behind his head.
"Glad to hear" Alaric muttered in annoyance as he sighed once again, now remembering what Ajax said about him having a depressive aura as he closed his eyes, now drifting off to sleep once again.
He woke up sometime later, hearing the shouts as the Captain came out from the cockpit as the back of the ship opened. "It's time boys! We get off here, and like I said before, your objective is to stall and delay the enemy till reinforcements arrive, in addition, you will also serve as support and reinforcements for the soldiers already there. Any questions?" Seeing none the Captain let out a smirk as he shouted, "Now then cadets, off to battle you go!"

Leftover Apocalypse
[Participant in the Royal Road Writathon challenge] This is a story about the newly-adult Calliope Smith having a terrible day that ends in her getting mysteriously teleported from Phoenix, Arizona to a fantasy world where her life is in constant danger. She considers this an upgrade. Someone evil is looking for her, and she doesn't know why. Someone who seems to know a lot about her has promised they'll help her, but she doesn't know who they are. All that matters to Callie is that magic is real and one way or another she's going to learn it. The end of the world is coming up, sure, but Callie won't need to worry about that. In fact, by the time she even finds out about it one of the doomsday devices will already be destroyed, and the authorities will be well on the way to dealing with the other one. It's fine. Everything will be smooth sailing. Almost certainly. Probably. Chapters are usually about 2500-3500 words, and the goal is to post 2-3 per week but I sometimes get busy or have some writers block. It's your standard portal fantasy / Isekai premise, but unlike some the main character's time on Earth and how she got pulled into another world will (eventually) be explored. Some slight GameLit-feeling stuff later, no menus or level-ups but there's something suspiciously like a skill tree when the magic system gets going. No number crunching, and while the main character will get to do some silly stuff she won't be a god like in some fics (and will in fact spend a lot of time being badly outclassed by her enemies). Some reader interaction, ranging from adding to the worldbuilding to occasionally making big important decisions about skill progression. Please note that the main character is flawed and impulsive, and will make some stupid decisions. That's part of the story, but I get that it's not for everyone. Trigger Warnings: Foster care system references, crappy parenting. Some mental health adjacent stuff, specifically the main character has some issues where she experiences varying levels of empathy and emotional vulnerability depending on the day (it's complicated and not meant to portray any real-world conditions). Occasional violence including mention of death and grievous bodily harm, but no detailed descriptions of gore.

Midthalion Saga
+++Working on new chapters. Share what I've posted with your friends and family! Be sure to build strong bonds with those who are important to you. We only have each other in this world for so long!+++ Can Roderick XXIII gather together and train a party of adventurers to clear out Madeon Caves and bring peace to the wildmarches of Midthalion? Sent from his home monastery in the west to the wildmarches of Midthalion, Roderick the Holy Avenger is devoted to living out his oath to bring the Holy Light to the dark corners of the world. He enlists the help of an old friend, Ulrich Vogelbrandt the dwarf druid, to train and prepare a fighting force capable of defending the west from the evil they both see gathering and growing in the east. Eoroth is an ode to Tolkienesque epic fantasy, Robert E Howard and H.P. Lovecraft's pulp fiction, and Gygaxian Dungeons & Dragons. I like to write about serious topics because I think it's fun. I hope it makes for a fun read. Place: Eoroth, a vast, flat world with many continents set in oceans that reach out and mingle with the Celestial Sea. Our story takes place on the continent of Thalion in the middle, unsettled region called Midthalion. Peoples: Races in Eoroth aren't different species; the species of man is just incredibly diverse, consisting of many known races (and perhaps some unknown). There are no humans in Thalion. Thalion's races include variations of elves, dwarves, halflings (billowits), pierros (clownish men), bergeracs (long-nosed and swarthy men of honour), orcs, trolls, goblins, and hobgobs. The Church: There's one dominant religion in Westhalion. The faith of the elves is an analogue to Roman Catholicism while the dwarves practice an Eastern Orthodox analogue. (Forgive me for not having figured out names yet.) The practitioners worship a triune god (the All-Father, Son-of-All, and Holy Light). There are many powers in heaven, all created by God. These include the Twelve High Thrones, individual, created beings who take on the role of guiding mankind in different aspects, drawing them closer and closer to God. (That should be the essentials. I could write pages on the theology. Comment where something's unclear in the story.) Natural World: There are plants and animals in Eoroth, but the world is also inhabited by spirits called aeons. Aeons are transformative beings; in the wild, they'll change based on whatever is happening nearby. Pollute a pond? Expect to see toxic toad-men running around. Leave a bunch of dead bodies strewn across a battlefield? Expect the place to become haunted with ghouls and ghasts. Druids are important for making sure that the aeons are pacified; that their needs are met so that they don't become rampaging monsters. Where the wilderness becomes overgrown, so too do the aeons. Aeons and People: Long ago, men learned how to trap aeons in stone tablets and use them for war. Now, anyone can capture an aeon into a special staff made by a druid. Men train, raise, and bond with these aeons. Druids often build entire ranches devoted to raising healthy aeons as allies and companions. Aeons are divided into twelve known families, and the church sees these as corresponding with the Twelve Thrones in Heaven. Direction: My goal is to get the story to one million words by June next year. I have tons of content in mind for the world. I want to release novels set in different ages of the world depicting different historical events. I hope to expand the setting into a tabletop role-playing game as well as a series of old-school JRPGs. But, it all begins with writing some stories and publishing my novels.

Tale of Tales
* Tale of Tales is a High/Epic Fantasy saga based on the motifs of ancient myths, legends, and forgotten fairytales * Senka is no hero, but you never know what is coming for you. And if that burns down your house and family, while you are left blinded by your house’s guardian snake, the outlook becomes grim. So Senka clings to her dog’s back to survive, unaware of the fateful prophecy and the great changes to come. But when a wandering warrior becomes her protector and mysterious strangers join their hounded party through a series of seemingly chance encounters, they all begin to discover that all is not as it seems. What is pursuing her? And why? Can the strange characters gathering around her on her desperate quest save her from doom? Are they mere puppets of a young, beguiling witch guided by her own hidden motives, or are forgotten shadows rising again from the immeasurable depths of time? A tale of folk fairytales and myths, of swords and sorcery and mythical beings – a unique story of dark times and unsung heroes who may light your way. Book one, A Strange Bunch, features leading characters of various ages. This is a fantasy with their progression happening slowly throughout the series, with occasional spikes in character power after certain encounters that may or may not be random. Although the book series is written with adult and young adult audiences in mind, it is, in the tradition of such epics as “The Lord of the Rings,” suitable for all ages. Excerpt from the scene depicted on the cover of the first book: “Above this hellish pack and the rider at the forefront, flurried a ghastly sight – a cloud of dark, endlessly bustling bodies and wings, a swarm of creatures that, through their almost infinite number, produced that great din which had first reached the ears…” RELEASE SCHEDULE is about once a week. The entire series should take around two and a half years of weekly chapter episodes, so do encourage me by reacting and following. Ratings are greatly appreciated!
