《Idealism》The Problems with "The Plan (1)"

"Before we do anythng else, lets go over the plan and the problems with it." Lawson said.

"Firstly, lets outline the problems." He grabs the marker and starts writing.

-----------------------------------------

'1. Corrupt Politicians.

2. Heads of the Insurance Companies.

3. The People's Opinion.

4. The Media's Portrayal.

5. Money Needed.

6. Legitimate Staff, Needing Money.

7. Time Taken.

8. Nationalising Industries, Space, Time, and Money.'

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Alright, let's start with number 1. Corrupt Politicians. Well, maybe they're not corrupted. Whatever. Either way, there will always be people who will oppose this idea. Your job is to ensure that they are the minority. There are 3 ways you can solve this. One, pay them more. Two, convince them. Three, replace them. Maybe there are more solutions, but they elude me."

Joseph said, "Yes, but at this point, I am not sure who are the opposers."

Lawson replied, "Make some other policies, short and harmless ones that do nothing, and you'll see."

Joseph gestured with his hand for Lawson to continue.

-------------------------------------------------------------------

"Number 2, The Heads of the Insurance Companies. Your idea of changing the current insurance approach from market-based into for-the-people, they will understand that, but they will still oppose it. Once someone has taken hold of something, they never want to lose it. You'll have to convince them that it is worth it, they will earn more, and... exploit their sins, you say? Well, how will you exploit their Greed for the money?"

Joseph grimaced. "I told you, its not exploiting their sins. It's a mixture between guiding them and exploiting. What we'll do is,"

But Lawson held up a hand. Joseph paused.

Lawson said, "Do you want to go through the solutions problem-by-problem, or do you want me to outline all the problems before solving each of them?"

Joseph thought for a short moment and went, "Alright, outline all your problems."

-------------------------------------------------

"The People's Opinion. The people care a lot about their rights. They want to know about everything the president does. Everything you do. And, like you said earlier, they like to throw all their responsibilities onto someone and blame them for its failure. I mean, its success will also be on you, but most of the time the risk and the stakes of the failure is much higher. So the way we sway that is-"

"The Media." Joseph nodded.

"Right. The Media's Portrayal. They jump on anything juicy, and love to twist words. Like what you said."

"I didn't say that." Joseph frowned.

"Sure you did." Lawson frowned. "Whatever. Let's continue. The way the Media shapes things shapes the People;s Opinion. And, as the Spectrum goes, on everything there will always be the agree-rs, the dis-agreers, and the abstainers. So you have to find a way to ensure that all the hard facts are said before the public, and that the public reads up on everything instead of quite possibly only reading one, singlular, biased source."

Joseph opened his mouth to speak but shut it just as quickly, and allowed Lawson to continue.

--------------------------------------------------------------------

"Money needed. To first change the healthcare insurance, you need a lot of money. And the ways you have proposed this is good, but one, the amount of scientists researcing weapons... okay. How much is 1% of the US population? 3 million, give or take. 3 million times 80 grand is..." He pokes the calculator, which shakes and threatens to jump from his grip at every hard tap, "....264,000,000,000."

Joseph gulps.

"Now, I'm not saying that the amount of scientists doing what you've said is 1%, but you should prepare for that possibility before asking for it.

Then, the Brexit deal. A lot of money is needed, well, maybe not a lot a lot but quite a bit is required for the deal. Accomadations, the food, where you're staying, the transport... Miscellanous affairs that can impact this ideal.

Furthermore, the making of your subsidies. The amount of money, liquid funds that go into boosting a company, is a lot, you understand? Even if we build a trust fund. Then, there's always the people who will exploit this fund of yours, taking money for 'company usage' when instead they blow it off on new cars and grandeur. Not that there's no solution for it, but you have to be aware. And then there's Nationalising Industries, but first, problem number 6."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Some Staff actually legitimately need money. Or maybe not. But I am certain that almost every member of the Staff at the White House do not want to lose a lot of their pay. Docking a quarter of it is still so much to them. Maybe 20%? I guess?"

Joseph deadpanned, "My original idea was taking half."

Lawson's mouth felt dry. "Okay. All I'm saying is that this will most certainly be a hurdle to your plan."

---------------------------------------------------------------------------

"7. Time Taken. You will only be president for 4 years. Welll, 8 if you're lucky. The point is, you don't want to be bogged down by this, right?"

Joseph's lips collapsed into a thin line. "No. This is only the First Plan. There are a lot of problems, like in The List."

"Right. Indeed. You can't let this drag out into a Brexit time duration. You have to finish this quick and simple. Money is a factor, but the people who hate change and complain about needing it, plus a whole lot of factors, including perhaps, an unexpected natrual disaster may happen and the people want to see aid being sent to them instead of on their own country, they will expect that, and you may have to give out money you can't give. People want to be heroes. But that's not how the world works. Change needs time, and 4 years? A blink of an eye. A student blinks and already he's in University from the last time he wet his bed."

------------------------------------------------------------------------

"And then of course there's the 8th problem. If you want to nationalise the industries to create more jobs, it takes a lot of time, money and space. You said that you want to do all three hopefully simultaneously. I agree with that. it's the only way to work. You have to take down all 3 - healthcare insurance problems, job offers increasing in numbers, yada - and that takes time. And money. And also spaces to construct the new nationalised industries and companies. Oh, that reminds me."

----------------------------------------------------------------

Lawson scrawled down a 9. "Love Potion Number 9. More like New Problem Number 9. Job's increasing demands for quality workers. I'm sure you've seen weird qualifications like needing 10 years of experience for code that just came out last week, or a bachelor's degree for a waiting job. The 9th problem is to decrease the job demands. The homeless can work, and there may be jobs for them, but who's to say that the strict employers will take them in?

---------------------------------------------------------------

Then Lawson turned to look at Joseph, and Joseph took a marker. His eyes were grim but confident.

And Joseph said, "Well, if you have problems, I shall do the solutions."
