《Vampire's Beginnings》Chapter Twenty-Four

Derik came down the stairs and found me standing in the living room with a confused look on my face. He didn't ask anything as he went to turn off the television. It was pretty obvious at to why I was confused.

Placing his hands on my shoulders, Derik directed me to one of the arm chairs in the living room and had me sit down, "No need to be confused or worried. David is notorious for not following Doc's orders."

That was something that wasn't hard for me to believe. David looked like the type that couldn't follow orders even if his life depended on it. Which in this case, it kind of did since he had a huge gash in his side from being stabbed. I don't think anyone would appreciate it if he ended up ripping open his stitches and bleeding to death.

"I thought he was sleeping this whole entire time," I said more to myself than Derik. Making him smile as he sat down on the couch where David once was.

"As long as I've known David, I have never seen him really sleep," Derik explained, "I'm not sure how he functions. He only closes his eyes long enough to not feel tired anymore. Very few get the honor of being in the same room while he actually sleeps."

"Guess you aren't one of the honored," I teased.

He laughed with me, "The feeling is mutual."

"But you would be," Derik and I turned our heads to see Ricky standing in the doorway with Mike standing behind him.

"I really need to think about locking you guys out," Derik mentioned as he got up from his chair and headed for the kitchen. Ricky saw that as an opportunity to come into the room and take his place. Mike stayed in the doorway.

Ricky looked better than David did. He even moved around a little bit better since the last time I saw him. Of course he was probably listening to what Doc told him instead of going against it. Also I'm sure Ashley made sure he was behaving. As soon as that thought crossed my mind, the sound of a door opening and closing revealed Ashley as she walked into the living room.

She didn't bother to say anything as she stood in front of Ricky with her arms crossed. He looked up at her sheepishly making me laugh. Rolling her eyes, she plopped down next to him, making him groan a little bit. With a pat on his back, Ashley looked at me with a kind smile, "How are holding up with the sudden move?"

"I'll let you know when I've been in the house longer than half a day," I answered her. She seemed to nod in understanding.

"I guess I should ask you tomorrow after you've had your first night in the house," she mentioned. There was a hidden meaning behind her words and she knew that I picked up on it. She was seeing how awkward things were suddenly living with Derik.

It was something I had to get used to, but I wasn't going to tell her about it. Especially when I agreed to share a bed with him. That would just add fuel to the fire of Ashley's rant. She was all team David and she would do anything to change my mind. I know she means well, but there was no changing who I chose to be with. Not when I agreed to spend the rest of my life with him and give him a chance.

A sudden yawn broke me out of my thoughts, making Ashley let out a small chuckle as she stood up, "Well that is our cue to leave," she then hit Ricky on the shoulder, making him wince, "I should return the husband who escaped also."

"I didn't escaped," Ricky whined as he slowly stood up.

"You left after I fell asleep," Ashley pointed out.

The two argued like a typical couple. It comforted me and reminded me of my parents before things went downhill. Before the whole thing with my sister happened. Just remembering it made the smile on my face fade a little bit. Especially with the memory from that day.

Ashley must have seen the look on my face and rested a hand on my shoulder, "I'll check up on you tomorrow morning. Maybe we can do breakfast together."

I nodded my head as I got up and walked them all to the door. Once they were out of the house and the front door was closed, Derik appeared next to me and turned the lock.

"I'm not taking any chances with these guys," he explained as he headed for the back door to lock that one as well. The whole action put a smile back on my face. Also I was starting to see what Jake meant when he said that the family tries to connect with Derik, but he just locks them out. David needed a place to rest away from the chaos and he thought our place was the perfect place.

Instead of welcoming him, Derik complained. Even when the others came, he complained and wanted to lock the doors. I could tell that they were trying to include him but he didn't want any of it. But I can see his reasoning as well. This was a life he wasn't used to and it must be a little overwhelming to him. To have people constantly in your life when you are used to having no one.

I leaned against the dining room table, lost in my thoughts. Not even paying attention to where Derik was until his hands rested on the table, trapping me between his arms. Looking up I was just inches from his face. His dark brown eyes held a devilish twinkle in them as he smirked at me. The whole closeness of him made my mind run wild and my cheeks red from blushing.

A smile broke out on his face from ear to ear. He used this opportunity to tease me, "What your you thinking about, Miss Rickabe?"

"Nothing," I said in a high pitch voice. A sure sign that I was lying.

He let out a small chuckle as he stood up straight, but moved closer to me. His hands then rested on my hips, not helping the thoughts running through my mind, "Do you realize how cute you look right now?"

Raising one of his hands, he placed it on my cheek. His thumb brushing against from my bottom lip. My heart raced as he leaned forward. I stopped breathing the moment his lips collided with mine. The shock kept me from doing anything for what felt like a good five minutes instead of seconds.

Giving into the kiss, my eyes closed as my arms wrapped around his neck. His hand falling back to my hip. Pulling me closer, he deepened the kiss. To my disappointment a sound of someone knocking on the back door ended the kiss too soon. We both looked to see who it was and if it was anyone other than Jack, I would have ignored them.

Instead I pushed Derik away and went to unlock the door. Hearing a small complaint from him as I opened the door to let in Jack.

"Aren't you supposed to be with Mike and Amanda?" I asked him as a way of greeting.

"I'm not sticking around while they try to put Amanda into early labor," he answered as he walked into the room and gave Derik a small nod, "Derik."

"Jack," he replied with annoyance, "I hope you don't plan to stay long."

"I plan to stay as long as I want. It is my pleasure to cock block you," Jack said with a sarcastic bow. Making me turn red and cover my swollen red lips. But Derik continued to glare at Jack, but he ignored him as he turned towards me, "Mind going for a walk with me?"

I looked at him confused. Disappointment crossed his face as he reminded me about something I never should have forgotten, "Today is Sally's birthday. Figured you would want to go visit her grave since you've been doing it every year since she died."

That made me feel like a terrible person. It took everything I had not to hit myself in the head. How could I be so stupid? But with everything that had been going on, it was easy to forget about what day it was and what events were coming up.

Turning to look at Derik, he just waved his hand, "Go ahead. I'm sure Jack is capable to protect you."

Hugging him as a 'thank you', I then followed Jack out of the back door. Circling the house to the street, we kept quiet. It was plan to see that Jack wanted to talk, so walking to the cemetery would probably be the best option. Now it was just a matter of when he will decide to say what he needed to say.

We were about halfway to the cemetery when he finally spoke. It all started out with a heavy sigh, "I feel like I feel my brother's pain every time I see you with Derik."

I opened my mouth to say something, but he continued to speak, "I know that this is only temporary because I'll find my soulmate one day. But David's pain isn't going to end until you end up with him. You feel the same way towards him, I know you do."

There was something there, but I wasn't going to admit it to him. Not when I didn't know what that something was. So keeping my silence was what appeared to be the best option. Jack didn't miss my lack of response either.

"You don't know what it is yet," he said with another sigh, "I don't know how the whole soulmate thing works because I've never experienced yet. But what it is described to me is that no matter what choices you make, your thoughts always goes to them."

"Reason why I constantly doubt things, right?" I finally said.

Jack smiled, "Exactly. Even though you didn't choose him, make him a part of your life. At least go to him when you need someone to talk to. Or, need a shoulder to cry on. David will be there for you because it's what his instincts tell him."

"You make it sound like he is some kind of animal," I joked.

Jack stopped, making me stop as well and look at him, "Aren't we all animals, Leah? Everything we do is focused on the sense of what feels right. What our gut is telling us to do. That's the instinct that we learn to listen to, Leah."

He then continued to walk, almost leaving me behind to think over what he told me. This was a new light I was seeing Jack in. He was appearing to be so wise all of a sudden. But maybe he was always wise and I just didn't bother to listen to him. To hear out what he has to say. It taught me that he was someone I should go to if I needed a different point of view, other than Jake.

Walking next to Jack once again, I continued our talk, "Do you think you will ever be a part of their family?"

He let out a small chuckle, "Believe it or not, I wasn't even supposed to be born. I'm the same as Derik. The thing about Gene V is that only those who have found their soulmate can have children. No need for birth control. Some how my mother got pregnant by someone else. Half of the family thinks that I'm actually Boss's son, but DNA says otherwise."

Jack then looked at me with sad eyes, "The reason I went to New York originally was because the scientists wanted to learn how it was possible. Eventually they gave up and I was free to do whatever."

"So you went to school," I finished for him. Jack nodded as a confirmation, making me feel like I should change the subject because he was remaining quiet.

It must be hard for him just as much as it was for Derik. They were the two that didn't really belong. Two people that went against the odds of what everyone one else learned about Gene V. Then something popped into my mind, making me blurt out my next question, "Isn't Jared like you guys too?"

Jack hesitated a bit before answering, "Not exactly. Jared's father isn't actually his father, but he doesn't know that."

"How is that possible?" I heard myself ask.

Jack let out a sigh as he stopped outside of the cemetery gate. Giving me his full attention, he answered, "When his mother wanted to have a child in her marriage, she went back to New York and faced her soulmate. She asked him to help her out and the moment she found out she was pregnant, she left," Jack looked towards the cemetery but didn't actually see it. He was too busy looking back at a memory that wasn't his, "His real father knows he exists, but due to the agreement they made he can't make any contact."

Hearing something like that made me sad. I couldn't imagine doing something like that. Keeping a child away from their father and having the father pretend that the child doesn't exist. It must be so hard for him. The whole thing made me want to tell Jared and fix the relationship that was never allowed to form.

Jack left me to think things through as he walked through the gate. Quietly I followed close behind him. Continuing to be lost within my thoughts. Not saying anything as we slowly approached my sister's grave. Just the sight of it made me remember what had happened to her.

Stopping in front of her tombstone, Jack asked the same question he has asked every time we come here, "Are you going to tell me about how she died?"

I couldn't say anything. Instead I just shook my head as I knelt in front of the stone that marked where my sister laid. A picture of her was safely behind a glass case above the words that stated her name, the year she was born, and the year that she died. The sight was still something I couldn't get used to.

My heart broke all over again as I stared at my sister's face. Everyone knew that she called me the night she died. The memory forever burned into my memory, but no longer giving me nightmares. Sadly, I still couldn't talk about it. It was just too painful remembering the feeling of helplessness as I listened to my sister die.
