《Vampire's Beginnings》Chapter Ten

It took about half an hour to convince David to have Derik stay with me while I processed all that was told to me. It got to the point that I was sure they were ready to drag him out of my house. But after a few words alone with Ricky and Mike, the guy who I didn't know from earlier, he agreed to go with it. Just as long as Derik didn't try to do anything. Not sure what he could do, but then my imagination go the best of me. Making me blush as red as a rose.

As soon as all the cars, except Derik's, left, we thought it would be safe to just sit in the living room and watch a movie. Derik left me to make the choice on what movie to watch while he went to make some popcorn. I figured finding the popcorn wouldn't be that hard to find since we usually kept it by the microwave, so I walked over to the bookshelf of movies. Trying to see if a certain one would speak to me.

The movie that I settled on was one that my sister loved. Before I decided whether or not it was a good idea or not to watch it, I put it into the DVD player. Derik walked in with a bowl of popcorn right when the title screen popped up on the television. A small chuckle fell from his lips when he saw what movie we were watching.

"A vampire movie? You do realize the irony in this right?" he pointed out.

I wasn't sure why I even went with my sister's favorite movie. A part of me probably wanted to still believe that vampires were nothing but in the movies. The vampires were badass that faught werewolves due a blood feud formed between them. Then you mix in a little bit of romance with the main character who is a vampire falling in love with a human that got dragged into the mess. I guess you can say that I feel like I can relate in a way right now.

Hitting the play button, I joined Derik on the couch to watch the movie. The popcorn sitting nicely between us. The title of the movie popped up before going into the opening scene of rain and the main character telling a little bit about what was going on in the world. How the lead werewolf was finally killed but the blood feud refused to follow him to the grave. Then our main character jumps off a building because she's a vampire and follows some werewolves. Eventually the first gun scene breaks out. I'm so into the movie already that I was kind of surprised to find the popcorn bowl empty when I put my hand in it.

“We’re out of popcorn,” I said, staring at the empty glass bowl next to me. I couldn’t recall eating so much. Jake stopped going to movies with me because of this reason. I would eat all of the popcorn in the first ten minutes of the movie, making him get more and missing the first part. Looking at Derik, I apologized, "Sorry. It's a bad habit of mine."

He smiled back at me as if he didn't mind. Getting off the couch, he grabbed the empty bowl and went back to the kitchen to make more. It kind of felt natural to be with Derik. Even though Derik was a complete mystery due to the reason that I didn't know much about him to begin with. Deciding that we could us the time to get to know each other when he came back empty handed, I turned off the movie. As if he knew where this was going, he sat in a chair that was next to the couch.

We stared at each other for a few minutes, waiting to see who was going to talk first. It was going on for so long that I wasn't sure we were even going to talk at all until he finally said something, "I know you are wondering why they call me the half breed. You don't have to admit it, but I know it has been bugging you since Ricky mentioned it."

I didn't say anything. If he was willing to explain things that I didn't ask, I was going to let him. It was better than staring at each other in an awkward silence.

"My dad is one of them. The Seadonnas. He and my mom had a thing for a while but he left when she got pregnant with me. Or, at least that is what my mom told me. His story is a little different," Derik continued with his story, "The Seadonnas have a rule to not date anyone that doesn't have the gene. It has something to do with the fact that their blood is poisoness to normal humans. So you can say its for the safety of people that they don't mess around in the human world.

"But my dad was young and rebellious at the time. Thought the rules were dumb and decided to date my mom. Eventually his parents made them break up. It was bound to happen because he found my stepmom not too long after that. So I'm only half Seadonna, but I still have the gene making me part of the family," when he finished he looked at me as if he was expecting me to laugh or something. That was a lot to unload on me. It kind of made me feel bad for him as well. It also made me curious on how he found his dad if his parents separated for so long.

"How did your dad find you?" I couldn't help asking. It would bug me forever if he didn't tell me that part of the story.

"I'm not sure how he found me. He just showed up one day and told my boss that I wasn't working for them anymore. Then got me a job with David and all them," he answered as he sat back in the chair. Looking highly relaxed, "They aren't really friendly, but they don't usually have to deal with half breeds like me. It's kind of like how Ashley and Amanda were treating you earlier."

"What do you mean?" I was confused now. Did he know something that I didn't?

He leaned forward and rested his elbows on his knees. It was as if he was getting ready to explain something that would probably blow my mind. But after hearing about vampires possibly existing, I am not sure what else there could be.

He proved me wrong with a heavy sigh, "The scientists that the family works with get notified whenever Gene V is discovered not within the family. It hardly ever happens, but I'm sure it still does with half breeds. Maybe that is how my father found me. But the one thing that almost never happens is when a pure form of Gene V is found.

"I'm not sure when they were notified but we were given orders recently to protect a first generation of Gene V. No one in your family has any signs or traces of Gene V, Leah. You are the first generation we were sent to protect," he finished. I was pretty sure my mouth was hanging open at this point. I think this was the point that I call complete BS.

I stood up and started pacing the room. Now things were going crazy again. And right when things were starting to make sense. There was no describing the feeling of relief when I heard the front door open and the familiar sounds of my father's footsteps. The whole thing made me leave Derik alone in the living room while I almost ran towards the only normal thing in my life.

My father looked confused when he saw me, but suddenly understood as Derik walked up behind me, "You can go now, Derik. I'll handle it from here. You can probably release Jake from whatever you have him doing."

"Yes, sir," he said in return and headed for the door. But stopped the moment his hand landed on the handle. Derik then turned his head towards my father, looking unsure about something, "Can I talk to you for a minute alone, sir?"

My father nodded before looking at me, "Go wait for me in the kitchen."

Confused, I followed what my father told me what to do. All this time I thought he didn't know who the young men showing up at our house were. But it appears that he did. Then the question on how he knew them kept bouncing around my mind as I went to sit at the island in the kitchen. My father appeared in the room shortly afterwards with the sound of the front door closing.

My father looked a little tired today. Maybe even stressed out a bit. The whole thing made him look older and it scared me. I think it was even more scary than being surrounded by crazy people telling me I'm a vampire. Just the thought of losing my father killed me. I have grown so close to him since my mom left.

"Dad, is everything okay?" I asked. You could hear the worry dripping in my voice.

My father let out a sigh, "I am not sure. It depends if you can remain safe here, or if I have to send you to your mother. She's the one that told me about everything that is going on."

I didn't know that my parents were even talking to each other. My day is just full of surprises.

As if knowing what I was thinking my father added, "It surprised me at first too. Hearing that such a family exists. Your mother works for them by making sure that they can settle into the world easily without many people noticing the differences they have. Then there is the first generation thing about you that she mentioned. We had always thought you were special. This just proves it."

I stared at my father confused. I had no idea what to think about what he was talking about. He took a seat at the island right next to me. I watched him take off his glasses as he rubbed his eyes a bit before placing his glasses back on his face.

“It’s about time that you knew the truth, Leah. You aren’t normal because of what runs in your blood. You are a pure blood of a high race that most would fear if they knew they existed. You have always been my special little girl, Leah,” my father continued to explain, “Some say it’s a blessing. Others say it's a curse. I'm in the group that thinks it’s a curse. Or, at least until you reach the Seadonna home in New York. Only because the Shidonna Family tries to convert the new comers to join their family and kills those that don't.

“Their leader Donny is a very dangerous young man, Leah. He's mean and evil that can use his looks to his advantage. He has only one goal in life. Make their race the superior beings in the world.”

I stared at my father. Taking in every word hoping that his explanation would start to make sense. But, I had a feeling that it wasn’t going to get any easier to understand unless I ask. My father believed all of this. The one person who I thought was the most clear headed and rational person in the world believed all the crap he was told, “What are you trying to say? You can't mean that you actually believe all of this?”

“I know you are confused, Leah. I was too when I was first told. I understand it’s a lot to take in,” My father agreed, "These boys are here to help you. They can help you understand so much better than I ever could. Befriend their wives so you don't feel so alone. Imagine what they had to go through when they were told that someone in their family had the gene."

I looked straight into my father's eyes. I was lost. That was when I noticed the form standing in the doorway. Looking I saw that Derik had come back but this time with a bag thrown over his shoulder. My father's eyes rested on him as well with a serious expression.

"My office is upstairs. You can sleep in there for the night," my father ordered. Making Derik nod in understanding before heading upstairs. My father's attention turned back to me the moment he was gone, "I need to warn you about something, Leah." I looked at him to hear what the warning was, "Don't get too close to Derik. They are all scared that he will join the Shidonna family one day. Being with him will only cause pain."

It was at that moment that I had the feeling that made my stomach twist. I wasn't sure why but it did. Derik seemed like a nice guy. It was impossible to picture him being associated with someone as evil looking as Donny. But I didn't know Derik that well. Sadly, I wanted to know him more against my father's better judgment. I just hope defying my father doesn't make my father right in the end. But the knot in my stomach told me that doing so would sign me my death sentence and it felt wrong.
