《Unholy Seven》Chapter 6: The Seven's First Mission

A klaxon blared on campus, followed by an announcement over the campus personal address system; “Demonic portal opening, all students report to fallout shelters. Team Johns year three, report for combat duty.”
The blaring of the klaxon startled Aaboli, Shizumi, and me awake. We bolt out of bed, me heading for my dresser to get dressed, the girls grabbing their nightgowns and robes and hastily heading for their rooms to do the same.
After getting dressed, I assemble the team outside. Portals open above us and demons begin to spawn. We raise our auras to protect ourselves and ready our weapons for the impending fight.
“Jesi, cast a barrier around the civilian shelters. Everyone else, form up on me and prepare for incoming.”
Demons begin to charge us, but we stand our ground with no difficulty. Rebecca, Hanneke, and Shizumi cut them down with their scythe, battle-axe, and naginata like hot knives through butter. I lash out with my claws and feet. Aaboli pierces through them with her spear. Jeni's arrows never miss their mark, and Jesi uses fire and lightning magic to disintegrate them. Blood rains down on the ground like a flood as we slay demon after demon.
As we continue to fight, I'm scanning the battlefield to see where the demon general is. My eyes finally land on what could possibly be the general. Her ornate armor made her stand out the most amongst the other demons.
“You guys stay here and hold your ground. I've found the general. I'm takin' the bitch out.” I bark.
“Got it,” they all call out.
“Yo, Bitch!” I yell at the general.
The general turns her head in my direction. 'You dare to challenge me, mortal?”
“Fuck yeah, and I'm gonna kick your ass, too.” I quip back.

She draws her sword and points it at me. “Draw your sword and face me then.”
“I don't need to draw. I'll face you without it.”
“You are foolish to do so. Die at your own peril.”
I charge the demon general at blinding speed. I swipe my claws at her as she swings her sword at me. I speedily dodge her strikes and land several of my own with my claws. The swipes slash through her armor, which gives her pause for a moment and decides to pull back from my attack.
“You're no mere mortal, are you? Pray tell, what are you?” She asks.
“Wouldn't you like to know.”
I start to charge her again, but now she's ready for me. Before I know it, she has swung her sword in a fury of fast strikes. So fast, my eyes didn't catch them as her blade slashes me dozens of times into my skin. She then thrusts her sword through my chest.
“As I said before, You are foolish. And now you're going to die.” She pulls her sword out of my chest, swings it to remove my blood, sheathes it, and proceeds to walk away. Jeni and Jesi race to my bleeding body and kneel at my side.
“Always gotta be cocky, don't you? Why can't you just ask us to help?” Jeni asks.
I cough up blood and look up at them with a smile. “Because it's part of my macho plan to get you to kiss me.”
“You fucking idiot, you don't need to go off half-cocked to get us to kiss you.” Jesi says.
“I love you both,” I wheeze.
Jeni and Jesi lean down and kiss me passionately. Our tongues entwine and I feel the seal on my vampiric power release. My fangs grow and my wounds begin to heal with superhuman speed. The chain on my sword releases as I stand on my feet. The blood-lust begins to consume me as I look in the general's direction and yell out to her.

“Hey, bitch, I ain't done yet!”
She turns toward me in surprise. “So your true nature reveals itself. I smell your blood and sense your power. By chance are you a vampire?”
“So what if I am. I'm still gonna fuck you up.”
I activate the implant in my head to play J-pop metal music as I launch toward the general. I draw my sword as she brings hers up to the ready. We trade blows at lightning speed, slashing and parrying so fast that nobody can see with the naked eye. I bring my sword down on her left arm, where she proceeds to block. This, however, is a fake attack, and I swing my sword down at her left leg and take it clean off. She collapses on the ground, a look of acceptance in her eyes.
“You've bested me in combat. Finish me, vampire.”
I sheathe my sword and kneel down beside her, cradling her in my arms. “ May eternal God in heaven forgive your sins.” I bite down on her neck and drain the blood from her exhausted body. Her corpse goes limp as I drain the life-giving fluid out of her. Once finished, I collapse to the ground and pass out.

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
