Chapter 1
"Varkas what do you see?" asked Raphael. He had been moving very slowly to mask his movements and the camo cloak he was
wearing was doing the rest of the work for him. Why do other chapters not use these more often? he thought.
"Another group of ten targets Sargeant, about one click northeast. Heavy bolters for all of them." said Varka's voice in
his ear. He looked to his left to where Varkas was, he had hidden himself perfectly and even the sniper rifle had blended
in among the sand. "Anything else Varkas?" he asked and the answer was a resounding "No". Excellent.
Around him the rest of Striker was similarly cloaked but Raphael could see their movements and where they had moved, they
had heard their conversation and were moving to the targets location slowly but surely. This had been the third group so
far and still no luck. Perhaps three times the charm.
"Sargeant Re-Shan here" said a voice in his ear. "Go ahead brother" he replied wondering what was going on. He kept
trudging up the sand dune to keep his brothers and his prey in his sightlines. "Targets sighted Sargeant, Varkas recon
was good". Raphael nodded in approval "Confirmed Re-Shan".
Varkas snorted over the vox "You doubt me brother?". Damascus interupted before Re-Shan could answer "Its always best
to confirm information, let it go Varkas" and then closed his vox channel. Well that was all but one member in the loop
thought Raphael but where had the fifth gone?
"Cyiren come in" said Raphael. He could see their targets now, Servitors blanklessly scanning the horizon for enemies.
He looked around for his team and slowly found each one, they had set themselves up and were preparing for combat.
"Cyiren here, is there a problem Sargeant?". His voice was suspitious and sullen sounding as always, Raphael rolled

his eyes and then spoke "Are you in position brother?". Cyiren ignored the honourific as always "I am setting up, one
more minute then we can begin".
Cyiren had to set up his missile launcher in a way that would prevent the backblast from hurting him, that would take
a minute as Cyiren said but as always his tone was cause for concern. It seemed like an age before he heard the words
he was waiting for "Ready, Sargeant". Raphael breathed out "Brothers engage as we have done before, Varkas take the
first shot on the one in the middle". He raised his bolter and waited.
A very faint sound emerged from Varka's position and a second later the Servitor's head exploded and the corpse fell in
a heap then the rest of the squad started firing. The only thing Raphael felt was the recoil as he aimed down his
sights to eliminate his targets, suddenly a missile streaked across the sky towards the Servitors who were all firing
their heavy weapons wildly but hitting only sand. The Striker team had hidden themselves too well.
The missile hit the ground in the middle of the group, the explosions impact throwing the Servitors into the air like toys.
Three more got back up again and went looking for where the missile came from and fired but Cyiren was already rolling
down the hill like he had done twice before.
Raphael leveled his bolter and fired again, the Kraken bolt hit his mark dead in the chest and the Servitor fell, the
second was hit in the back by a plasma shot fired by Damascus and the final one was hit by a sniper round and Re-Shan's
bolter fire.
Raphael breathed out again, the adrenaline starting to subside. The whole team waited and watched for any one of their

targets to move or for reenforcements to arrive. When neither happened for five minutes the team emerged from the sand
like four restless spirits and began to converge. Varkas stayed where he was, looking for any more Servitors.
When they reached the mangled bodies of the disturbing cyborgs all but Raphael set to work ensuring they were dead.
Raphael however was looking for something else and on the fifth body he found it, a blastproof container with a locator
beacon inside. He frowned, it was too easy.
"Damascus take a look" he said as he tossed the device towards Damascus and switching positions with him as he did.
When it came to technology he trusted Damascus above all, each member had their specialty and this was his. Damascus
muttered prayers to himself as he tinkered with the circuitry until finally he smiled, pulled a wire and then spoke "Looks
like the Sargeant was right to be suspitious, there is a transmitter in here as well as a locator".
Raphael smiled to himself, if they had used it now every Servitor would be on them before they could even realise what
happened "Good work brother, is it safe to use now?". Damascus nodded and held out the beacon "Perfectly, do you want the
honours?" Raphael shook his head "Go ahead". By now the team had arrayed around him in full, Varkas was jogging in their
direction with his rifle slung over his back. For an expert in sharpshooting Varkas moved extremely quickly, even by Space
Marine standards.
Re-Shan and Cyiren looked at each other and started to laugh despite the incedulous looks of Raphael, Varkas and Damascus
directed at them, it was a very rare day when the two agreed on something let alone laughed at. Re-Shan breathed in heavily
and saw the pair staring at them and shrugged "Sorry Sargeant".
Raphael frowned "Is there something I would know Re-Shan?". Re-Shan grinned and shook his head but apparently Cyiren was
less willing to be polite "Its funny because Sargeant Raphael here only accepts the honour of killing alien leaders, at
least that is what he has displayed". He smiled broadly and hefted his missile launcher to his shoulder, arrogant as per
usual in the face of Raphael's feeble attempts to contain his displeasure.
"Do you truly think so little of me Brothers?" Raphael asked quietly, he turned to Damascus "Activate the damn thing" he
ordered.
Damascus obeyed and pushed a few buttons, all at once the sand, the sky and practically everything else vanished all at
once and was replaced with cold metal walls.
A loud simulated voice then sounded "Simulation terminated".

Rise of the Desolate Star
“The soul is a sword. The body its sheath. Adversity is the hammer, while courage is the anvil. Oh, and son? Your tears and snot, they’re just the sparks that chip away at the impurities, like dungflies off a sow’s arse.” - Kendric Farrow Ever since he could remember, young Skyle Farrow’s body and mind have been hammered relentlessly like red-hot steel against the anvil of adversity under the watchful eyes of his father. All the while, Skyle’s heart and soul have been nurtured by the enduring warmth of his loving mother. Skyle has always asked why a simple farmboy would have need for all manner of skills like hand-to-hand combat, wilderness tracking, archery, beast taming, geography, history, politics, and even embroidery! The one vital question remains unasked, however: just what are his parents preparing him for? The invasion of a demonic horde? The advent of an age of war and endless bloodshed? The dark legacy of an ancient mystical power? A desperate struggle to save the lives of those he holds dear? The end of the world? It is a good thing he never asked these questions, for the answer would have been yes - to all of them. Now Skyle must take his first steps beyond the sheltered world he has known. He has been raised strong, but is he strong enough? Welcome to a tale of friendship, love, loss and heartbreak. It chronicles the growth of a young boy into a legend whose path will shatter the very foundations of the world. Expect a rich, detailed world with vivid characters. Each will pursue their own complex agendas due to realistic motivations. The MC will be overpowered, not through liberal use of plot armor but rather the deliberate application of arduous training, clever thinking, and nurtured talent. Battles will be graphic, victories will be bittersweet, and defeat will not mean the end of the world - for time waits for no one and life goes on whether we like it or not. Luck And Chronomancy
Time Magic is the best magic as everyone knows, although there are lots of unique Talents in the world. Most people only remember Haste because it is hard to get to higher Phases of Chronomancy. That is still enough to make the Talent iconic. A lucky enough Aleatory Talent can position you for greatness or leave you languishing in obscurity. The only true equality in the world is when that glowing message pops up at 8 years old. Even if it doesn't activate until you are an adult at 16 you still know. Sure you can find a new dungeon spawn and get another chance at a rare Talent, even this one, but you have to already be ready to delve into the *Far Wilds*, which is far easier with wealth or family power. This is the story of where my good fortune took me and the difference it made, even among a party of 7 others including an Arcanist. It is a journey of magic and monsters but also math, which some think is actually worse. Luckily I was born with Intelligence and Focus as my personal traits, and my parents were scholars. Of course Chronomancy can also be a frontline combat talent. Versitility well beyond other Elder Talents like Gravity, Abstraction, or Arcana. Might could have worked for me, too. I also met a runaway princess. All the best adventures have a princess. She hated being a noble and we didn't get married but it still counts. Besides she really filled out our front line. All that Leadership training came in handy. I still don't know where she's from. Who cares? How well Haste goes with giant hammers is what's important. I never learned much about anyone in the party, except the one I grew up with. I'm not a people person. I just wanted to optimize dungeon clearing time. *******Story Details******* No romance, politics, or traumatizing content, slice of life, or even dialogue. 1st person narration, like a guide/adventure log. 2000-7000 words a day, maybe 40-60% rpgish combat log with some reasoning on combat decisions, with the rest character Talent discussion and progression stuff. 8 person party with a decent variety in roles. Party members usually have 2 primary functions. Told from the support/control Chronomancer's perspective. Each party member will have 6 Basic/Background Traits, then 3 actual Talents with abilities. Capstone from their Educational Institution, Arbritrary as a gift from the temples, and Aleatory which is decided at birth, revealed at 8, and activated after adulthood at 16. Aleatory Traits ignore requirements and are random why is why they are so important. They'll gain new Talents from finding Dungeons to consume in the *Wilds*. Mature dungeons in cities can provide *Challenges* to raise the Phase of a Talent, up to 3 times from 1 to 4. Each character will get to roughly 8 non-Trait Talents. Attributes come exclusive from Talents, are required by Talents, and provide various effects as well. I designed about 220 Talents with abilities, 4 in each of 4 phases. "Traits" are just Attribute stuff. I'm not sure how many will be detailed in the story, more than 100 for sure. I used Talents because I want to be free of the legacy of tabletop. Half those rules are just because of the limitations inherent in a pre-computer ttrpg. This story mostly uses combat Talents, although like 1/3 of the 220 are for crafting and other society and economy stuff. If you really wanted to be a Thief you might take Intuition, Awarness, and Might for Basic Traits and Deftness, Manipulation, and Trickery for Family/Education. Then you'd pick Acrobatics, and Climbing for Educational Capstone and Arbitrary traits. You Aleatory Trait might be Shadow(Light/Dark) Magic, Umbramancy. A Bard might swap Dexterity for Charisma, Music for Acrobatics, and have gotten Illusion(Shadow/Sound(Air/Force)) for their Aleatory Trait.
