《Powerless Hero》Chapter 6: Initiation Rounds

“Cole Price is the winner!” The announcer yelled into his mic. The audience erupted in cheers shouting his name.
“Well... I guess Cole is a popular one." Aaron said.
“Yea... Aaron have you gotten your first fight?” Becca asked him.
“Yes. My fight is tomorrow at 1700. What about you?”
“Also tomorrow at 1900.”
“Ladies and Gentlemen your next fight will begin in just a few more minutes.” The announcer spoke through the speakers. Becca took in a deep breath.
“Hey... don’t worry. He’ll do fine. He’s been training really hard.” Aaron put his hand on her shoulder.
“Yea. You’re right.”
“Ladies and Gentlemen, from the North Tunnel we have your Powerless Weakling Elias Roberts!!!” The crowd was filled with boos and hatred for him. He walked out from the tunnel. Becca has never seen him in his combat suit before.
He was wearing a long black leather trench coat with a stiff collar. The pockets were outlined in red. The coat wasn’t buttoned up revealing the padded shirt and pants that he was wearing. The shirt had some red highlights too along with his pants. He drew his sword and held it in front of him.
“Coming from the South Tunnel is everyone’s favorite fire user! The Enflamed Tornado, Danial Lynch!!!” Out from the tunnel came a tornado of blue flame. The Tornado ended and a tall man wearing a blue flamed combat suit stood in its place. The crowd erupted in cheers and excitement.
“They put Elias up against him!?!” Becca said surprised.
“I guess so. They put him up against the strongest guy in the school.” Aaron answered.
“Why would they do that?” Becca said clenching her teeth in anger.
“I think it’s because they don’t want to give him a chance at staying at the school. All of his initiation rounds are going to be the schools top fighters.”
“That’s not fair.” Becca began to clench the armrests.
“I don’t think the school wants it to be fair.”
“This needs to be stopped!” She said standing up.
Aaron reached for her hand and grabbed her. “There’s nothing we can do about it. Elias will have to pull through this on his own.”
“Battle Start...3...2...1... Fight!” The announcer called.
Immediately a blue fire tornado charged at Elias who didn’t move but instead changed his position. He pointed his right foot forward and brought his left back and brought the hilt up over his head with blade pointed down towards his left foot.
The tornado continued to move towards him and he simply waited. The flames were practically right on top of him when he swung into it. The tornado was immediately dispelled and Danial was holding the sword captive in his flames.
“Nice try kid. But maybe put some power into the swing first. Oh right. You don’t have one.” He gave a flaming punch to Elias stomach knocking him off stage.
The match was called; declaring Daniel the winner. Elias stood up, smiled and walked out. Becca immediately stood up and immediately began running towards the exit.
Becca found him on the roof and silently walked up to him. She put her hand on his shoulder. It was dark out. He looked back at her with his soulless brown eyes. “You ok?” He asked.

“M-me? You’re the one who lost!”
“Yea. It still went better than I expected it to.”
“You mean you thought it was gonna be worse?”
“Come on Becca, of course I did. The strongest person in the school fighting the weakest. I’m lucky I was able to come out without a scratch.”
“You’re far from the weakest Elias.”
“Huh?”
“A lot of our strength comes from our mind. You may be the strongest ability user. But that doesn’t mean anything if you don’t have the willpower to use it. You have an impressive amount of willpower.”
“No I don’t. I’m just really lucky.”
“Whatever Elias. You should get some sleep. Even if you couldn’t do much you still need to rest.”
“Yea. I guess you’re right.” He began to walk away.
“Oh yea. When is your next fight?”
“Tomorrow at 1800.”
“T-tomorrow!?!”
“Yea. It seems they really want me out of the school. Oh well. Can’t do much about it.” He disappeared down the stairs.
Becca didn’t follow him. “I think you have a lot of strength Elias. To push through this hard and not back down, it’s something I envy. It seems that you face impossible odds. Yet somehow I know you’ll be the best one of all of us. Just hold on to that strength Elias.” She said to herself quietly. After a few minutes she went to the room. She found Elias out cold in his bed.
She knelt down next to the bed and examined him in his sleep. She smiled and placed her hand on his cheek while placing her head on his forehead. “You can do this.” She whispered. “I know you can.” After that she got ready for her night and slept on the bunk above him.
Elias continued to train with his sword. He was taking a very light training session though. He needed to be ready for the fight later tonight.
Every fight wanted you to be ready for when your time came. Which meant that while the match ahead of you was fighting you should be in the locker room getting ready. They would assume each fight took about and hour but some fights were longer or shorter and wanted the next fighters always ready. Becca could start to watch Aaron’s fight but she was right after Elias so she wouldn’t be able to watch him.
Aaron was already in prep room waiting to be called to the arena. “Coming from the North Tunnel is Professor Gaseous, Aaron Hughes!!!” Aaron calmly walked onto the stage and prepared himself for his opponent.
“Now coming in from the South Tunnel, Captain Eternal, Georgia Jenkins!!!” She ran onto the stage. Pumped and ready to go.
“Sorry for the bad luck Aaron. You’re powerful with your gas but I’m immune to it because I’m immortal.” Georgia spoke to him.
“Haha, well thank you Georgia. I know that I can’t do much to you with my powers. But I can still try to knock you out of the ring.” He returned.
“Battle Start... 3... 2... 1... Fight!”
Georgia ran towards him in an attempt to engage him in close combat with her sword. Aaron knew his gas wouldn’t choke her. However he could still become gas himself to avoid her attacks. She couldn’t be harmed because she was immortal. But that doesn’t mean she can’t be knocked out of bounds.

Just when Georgia brought down her sword at Aaron’s shoulder he turned into gas and floated over to the other side. Georgia smiled and ran towards him. “Playing hard to get are we?”
“Just waiting for an opening.” Aaron replied back.
Georgia once again brought her sword down towards his shoulder. This time however he dodged it and grabbed the blade and turned it into gas. “It’s not really fair if you get a sword and I don’t.” Aaron remarked.
“I still know how to play with my hands.” She brought her fist towards his face and landed a hit.
Aaron stumbled a bit and felt where she punched him. “Nice shot.”
“Care to give me some more easy shots?”
“Sorry sweetheart. That’s the only one you’re gonna hit.”
“Getting cocky are we?” She lunged at him again.
This time he parried her arm and threw her over his shoulder landing her out of bounds. “Maybe just a bit.”
“Aaron Hughes is the winner!!” The announcer said excitedly over the speakers.
Aaron walked over to the pouting girl and offered his hand smiling. She smiled back and took his hand pulling herself up. “You caught me by surprise.” Georgia said. "Like always." Aaron simply smiled as his response.
Becca stood up. She needed to get prepared for her fight. She left towards the locker room to switch into her gear.
“Wait is that Rebekah?”
“Yea it is. Doesn’t she live with that powerless weakling?”
“Yea. She’s also the only girl that even hangs out with him.”
“Poor girl. It’s gonna be hard for her to get his attention with nothing even remotely physically appealing."
Becca simply walked faster and crossed her arms over her chest feeling self conscious. She got to the locker room and began to change into her gear. “So what if I have small ones. It’s not like I’m trying to gain his attention or anything.” Deep down she knew that she was lying to herself. She was insecure about a lot of things and it really bothered her that she wasn’t a very thick girl. She was convinced they were right. She could be the only and the greatest friend to Elias possible. But it would never amount to anything more unless she was more physically appealing.
She quickly shook those thoughts out of her head. Right now that didn’t matter she had a fight that she needed to be ready for.
After a while the light turned green for her to enter. The panel to her left said she was entering the arena last. The door opened. “Coming from the North Tunnel, Agent Null, Vera Graham!”
“Coming from the South Tunnel, The Avatar, Rebekah Brooks!” Becca heard her name and ran out onto the arena. She was wearing a black and purple battle skirt with armored shoulder pads. Most of it was Kevlar and her tights were also reinforced.
“Battle Start... 3... 2... 1... Fight!”
Becca immediately began to punch a powerful flame at her but halfway through the punch she became weak and let out a tiny spark. Becca collapsed, she tried to get up. Pushing against the ground fighting to stand up. “Just as I thought... Your confidence is weak.” Vera spoke. “You don’t believe in yourself at all. No willpower."
Becca continued to fight against the ground. Pushing with all of her strength. “You know I bet you must hate for the crowd to see you like this. So weak. Why don’t you just make it easier on everyone and walk out of bounds.”
Becca was immediately able to get up. However, against her will she turned around and started to walk out of bounds. She was struggling to stop herself. Her leg shaking as she took each step as she resisted each pull to the edge.
“How pathetic. I bet you’re even more embarrassed because your boyfriend is watching.”
“H-he’s not my boyfriend.” She struggled to fight against her mind control.
“Oh right, of course he’s not honey. It’s hard to attract anyone without a chest.”
“Shut up.” Becca continued to struggle against the mind control.
“Aww don’t tell me you’re insecure about that. It’s not like he won’t at least give you a chance right?”
“Shut up.”
“Is little Rebekah getting upset now? Does it hurt to know that the wuss won’t see you in the same light?”
“He’s not a wuss.”
“Oh I think he is. He has no power.”
In an instant Becca stopped moving. She slowly turned around. “Elias has more strength than anyone in this world. Strength doesn’t come from your abilities, it comes from your willpower.”
“Y-you have strong confidence now?! Impossible you should be walking off the stage!”
“I have complete confidence in what I say is right. Elias has willpower like no other human. He’s powerless born in a world where everyone has a power and he continues to fight despite knowing he’s at a severe disadvantage.” Becca began to lift pieces of the stage. “Elias is the strongest person I know.”
“No no wait. I’m sorry I didn’t know you had that much confidence in him!”
“So don’t insult him again!” Becca lunged the two parts of stage at her sending her flying off the stage.”
“Rebekah Brooks is the winner!”
It took Becca a few seconds to understand what that meant. But when it finally clicked she smiled and got excited. “I won!” She quickly ran out of the arena to try and find Elias.
However, she was stopped by Aaron in the hallway. “Did you see me? I won!” Becca told him excitedly.
“Oh yea I saw you.” He responded smiling, his opponent Georgia stood next to him smiling as well.
“Where’s Elias?”
Aaron’s face quickly faded. “Elias almost drowned. He’s currently unconscious in the infirmary. He lost again.”
