《Powerless Hero》Chapter 4: The Risk

“Class is dismissed. Everyone head to their last class.” The Ability Training Instructor said.

“Is he going to be ok?” Becca asked her.

“He took a lot of electricity. He’ll be lucky if he comes out alive. But if he does our nurse has the best restoration powers in the world.”

“I think I’m gonna wait outside the infirmary and skip my last class.” Becca told Aaron.

“No you go to class. This is my break hour. I’ll wait outside.” Aaron replied.

Becca nodded and began to walk to her next class. “No abilities? He’s powerless?” Becca couldn’t believe it. He was a Roberts and yet he was the only person since The Flash that didn’t have a special ability.

Aaron sat down in front of the infirmary. Elias was being healed by the nurse and he still hadn’t waken up. After about 5 minutes the Principal walked into the infirmary. Elias was awake now.

“Mr. Roberts I see you’re feeling ok now.” The Principle spoke.

“Yea.” Elias smiled. “I guess I was hit pretty hard.”

“Mr. Roberts this is not a funny matter. You could have died and you’re very lucky we got to you before you died. As advanced in her healing as our nurse is. Not one person has ever had the ability to raise the dead.” Elias didn’t say anything.

“Mr. Roberts, I assume you know what The Flash is right?” He asked.

“Yea. Half of South America erupted in a bright light and disappeared. Leaving nothing behind. Suddenly, people all around the world began to manifest amazing abilities. This was 500 years ago.”

“Correct. You are the first person to not have an ability since then. Yet you knowingly still enrolled in this school. You may die.”

“I know.”

“Which is why I can’t allow that. I can’t expel you because you’ve done nothing wrong. So I’m asking you to drop out of this school and attend a regular high school.”

“I’m afraid I cannot do that sir. I want to help save lives.”

“The police force? Medical field? Fire Department? They all save lives and aren’t dangerous to go into.”

“Yea but what police force or medical school will deploy me out when they just heal instantly or simply use someone with powers to deal with the problem.”

“You make a solid point Elias. But I’m asking you to do this for your safety. Withdraw from the school. Go somewhere else.”

“No.”

“Fine. I’ll just have your parents take you out. You may want to stay here but you don’t have any legal edge if your parents take you out.”

“My parents won’t take me out of this school.”

“If they care for your safety then they will.”

“What makes you think they actually care about me?” Elias smiled again. “Think about it Principle Hardy. I’m a Roberts, born without any powers. They only claim they have 9 children. They have 10. Can you take a guess who that missing child is? If anything they want me to stay in the school so I die. To them I’m a complete embarrassment and I’m rejected at every family outing. My family wants me dead.” Elias spoke. He was void of emotion. No anger, no sadness. Just soulless. Like his eyes.

The principle was shocked. But when he considered the pride of the Roberts family and one son being born with no ability he could tell that what Elias was telling him was very likely. “I see... so you’re gonna be here and risk it all despite having no abilities?”

“Correct.”

“You expect you’re gonna become a top hero?”

“I don’t ever expect anything good to come in life sir. I do expect to die a painful death while at this school. But that doesn’t mean I won’t try to become one.”

“Alright. Well the nurse has requested that you stay the night here. Just so she can watch over you and make sure you’re truly back to full status. No leaving here for any reason at all. We will let Ms. Brooks know that you won’t be returning to the room tonight. But when you get up your regular schedule begins and will be released from this room.” The principle stood up and left the room.

“Is he doing alright sir?” Aaron caught him before he left.

“He will be doing fine Mr. Hughes. No visitors are allowed until school is over however.”

“Understood sir.”

After a while Becca showed up, which meant school was over. The nurse said they can go in.

Elias sat up against the wall next to the bed and was looking out of the window. “Hey...” Becca spoke.

“Hi!” Elias looked at her and smiled. His soulless brown orbs meeting her sad light blue orbs. “What’s wrong?” He noticed immediately.

“How are you feeling?” Becca asked ignoring his question.

“Me? Oh I’m doing normal I think.”

“Normal?”

“Yea. My normal state of mind.”

“Oh...”

“I’m gonna ask again. Are you ok?”

“Y-Yea. I’m ok. Just yo-you almost died back there and finding out that you don’t have an ability. I can’t begin to imagine what it’s like.”

“Haha don’t worry about it. I’ve just accepted that I don’t have an ability like everyone else. There’s nothing I can do so why get upset over it?”

“Y-Yea I guess that makes sense. So what are you going to do now? Are you being expelled from the school because of it?”

“No no nothing like that. The principle wants to expel me for my own safety but he can’t do it legally so I’m still here.”

“You’re still gonna drop out right?”

“Nah. I’m still gonna try to become a top hero. This school is what can give a non-ability user a shot at doing so.”

“But it’s dangerous.”

“I’m aware. I knew that from the start. It’s dangerous even for someone with abilities. That’s not stopping me.”

“I admire your courage and your determination.”

“Why thank you!”

Elias began to look out the window again. The sun was beginning to set now and there wasn’t a good view. “I guess watching the sunset will need to wait until another time.” Becca stated sadly.

“Yea. Sorry about that.”

“Yea you’re such a jerk you know that?” She joked.

“Oh I know. Man who woulda thought that I couldn’t take a couple bolts of lightning.” He joked with her.

“Yea no kidding, you’re such a weakling compared to the average person.” She giggled.

“I hate to interrupt this friendly banter but Elias needs to rest and you two should head to your dorms now.” The nurse spoke.

Elias and Aaron nodded and left the room heading towards their own room. Aaron entered his room and looked to his roommate. “Hey Logan can I ask you something?”

“Shoot.” The short white haired piercing red eyed kid responded.

“Can you tell me everything you know about Elias Roberts?”

“That’s a lot.”

“Do what you can.”

“Take a seat.”
