《Beauty Perspective》Chapter 16

"W-what makes you say that?" Nolan asked with a slight stutter.
Kevin smirked. "For an ex adventurer like me, it was a bit obvious. Your luck, attitude and lack of common sense."
"Alright, I was summoned here. Is that going to be a problem?" Nolan straightened up and kept a steady gaze.
"With me, not really. But, I am going to ask some questions. If I think your lying, I want you out. Now, what is your mission?"
"What do you mean?"
"Did the god that summoned you give you a mission or goal?"
"Not really. He said that he and others will be watching me, for entertainment. He told me to do what I want."
"Did he give you a power or special ability?"
"Yes, but that is my business."
Kevin smiled. "Good, you're not too stupid. Now, what is your goal."
Nolan thought a few moments before answering. "I want to enjoy my life, with those I can trust. I will also take threats seriously, especially when I've done nothing wrong."
"You've got me wrong, Nolan. I'm not threatening you." Suddenly and spear appeared in Kevin's hand. "I'm trying to see if you're the threat. Did your god tell you what it meant to be a summoned?"
Nolan frowned at his words, and the spear that was subtly pointing at him. "Not really."
"Every once in awhile, the gods summon people to this world. Usually a few hundred years apart. When that happens, the world starts to erupt into chaos. Some calling themselves heros and enacting their own justice, and a few trying to become what they call a 'demon lord'. I just wanted to ask a few questions and maybe give some advice."
"Their will be others?"
Kevin waited a few seconds, then smiled. "Yep. Most of them will likely try to kill you. Some will gain powers or perks for it. I'm pretty sure someone already wants you dead."
"What?! I haven't been here long enough to piss anyone off yet. Why would someone want me dead?"
"I can think of three. One, you came in carrying a chest of treasure. Two, you were carrying a valuable staff on your back. And three, you and your two slaves are wearing gold storage rings. I learned the first two before you even arrived in my tavern. I wasn't even trying to know about you, you were much too careless."
'Oh shit, he's right. I was pretty much a walking billboard, saying 'kill me, I'm loaded'. I might need to go somewhere else.'
Seeing Nolan start to panic, he let out a sigh. "I'm only helping, because you seem like a nice kid. Just stupid and inexperienced." Nolan stared at him for a moment. "Did you notice the rabbit this morning?"
"Umm, no?" 'Does he mean a rabbit person or an actual rabbit?'
"The rabbit has been listening to you and your group, since they got up this morning. You need to be a lot more cautious and get your stuff from the dwarves, quickly. I'm retired and I don't want people to bring trouble to my tavern. You should also visit the slave trader and tell him what you are. He will be a good connection for information." Kevin then got up, while still looking him in the eyes. "One more thing, if you cause Sasha to suffer, I will shove this spear so far up your ass, that you will be tasting your own shit. Have a nice day." After finishing his threat with a smile, he left the room.

Nolan then went back to Lina, she was listening to Sasha talk about something. He looked around and found a man sitting near their table, he had long rabbit ears. The man had his back to their table. 'Shit, his hearing is probably really good. Likely hearing everything we've said today.' "Lina, let's go. We need to go get our stuff."
She looked up to him and paused. Looking back down, seeing his mostly uneaten food, she looked at him again.
"Now." She quickly got up and followed him out. When they were a decent distance away, he spoke up. "Kevin knows what I am and said that the rabbit back their has been listening to us. He thinks someone is out to kill me, since I did walk in with a treasure chest and a valuable staff, I think he's right. We need to get our stuff and find Celine."
She nodded and followed, looking around for any obvious threats.
They soon got to the dwarven shop and got their stuff. The dwarves showed them a spot to get dressed. When they were done, they left for the library to get Celine. She was standing near the library, while intently reading a book. "Celine, over here."
When she saw who was calling, her face turned red and the book vanished. "M-master, I was just on my way back." She was very flustered.
"We need to talk, let's go." Nolan said in a serious tone. Celine picked up his tone and quickly followed as he gave her her stuff. He explained everything that happened with Kevin, as they went toward the slave shop.
When they arrived, they walked in and were glad that no one but Trevor was their. "Trevor, we need to talk."
The slaver looked at them and noticed their tense atmosphere. He then went into seller mode, with a friendly smile. "What can I do for you Nolan? Are you here to buy a mage, specifically a healer?"
"No, I'm here to buy information."
"Of course. One must be informed to make good decisions. If I don't know, I'm sure I can find someone who can. What would you like to know?"
"I need to talk about some sensitive and personal things. Kevin said that I should talk to you."
Trevors smile went away and he looked them over again. "I see. Follow me." He walked into another room in the back. Another man stepped out to watch over the shop.
Looking around, he saw lots of people of varying races, some of them in cages. They soon arrived in a room with eight boar warriors. Four of them stayed outside, while the other four stayed near Trevor. When the door shut, Nolan heard a click and saw the door shimmer. "What was that?"
"That was the enchantments activating. No sound will leave this room. No one will be able to listen in, even if a rabbit puts his ear to the door. Now that we are in safety and privacy, what is it that you want." Trevor was serious and to the point.
Nolan stood their a moment unsure what to say. "Well, umm. I'm not sure how to say this, but I'm a summoned." Pausing to see Trevors reaction.
"What? Are you saying that you are not of this world and that a god summoned you here?" The man said as he narrowed his eyes.

"Yes."
Trevors stare started to change into a glare. "Are you here to kill me?" The four warriors tensed up and grabbed their maces, ready to react.
"Wait, what? Why would I want to kill you?" 'Shit, did Kevin set me up?'
"Because you are a summoned. Summoned like killing slavers and setting slaves free."
"No, I'm not here to kill you."
"Then what is your mission?"
"The god of reincarnation said to fight and survive. I'm here as his entertainment. He said I could do what I want. I don't want to kill anyone for no good reason and if I don't have to. I would rather go through dungeons and kill monsters."
Trevor stood in silent thought for a few minutes. "When did you arrive?"
"Four months ago."
Trevor thought for a moment and then looked at the girls. "When did you meet the adventurers in the dungeon?"
"Seven, maybe eight days ago. Why?"
"The way it works, is that one summoned arrives first. Maybe a subtle warning of the others to arrive, but most likely to give that one a head start. If you're the first, then we have three weeks before the others start to arrive." He then walked over to a table and grabbed a jar and a brush. "Now, I need you to prove that what you said is true."
Nolan looked at the man cautiously. "How do I do that?"
"The summoned are unable to be enslaved with the slave mark. I'm going to put one on you and see if it works."
"How do I know that you're telling the truth?"
"When you don't become enslaved." Nolan still looked at the man suspiciously. "If you're telling the truth, then we can come to some kind of agreement. Some perks of being on the slavers alliance's good side."
"Fine, let's get this over with." He then undressed enough to show his chest. Trevor drew a slave mark and put a drop of his own blood on the mark, and quickly stepped back. A second later, the mark sparked and dissolved away. "Damn, that shit stun."
"So you were telling the truth." He paused for a moment to think. "We need to have a long chat, before we can start talking about anything else. First, if you betray me, I'll have you hunted down and butcher you and your slaves. It's time for a history lesson, so pay attention, I need to make sure you understand how slavery works here. First, slavers who make slave marks, are a family business. We pass it on to the next generation on how to make the marks and the rules of slavery.
"When the first 'heroes' arrived, they did a lot of good. But, when they gained enough power, they slaughtered slave traders and freed all the slaves they saw. Many slavers were bad and many slaves were unfortunate people, but, not everyone was that. Some traders only dealt in a specific type, like criminal slaves. The type that work to death, but is still seen as a mercy for their crimes. They caused a lot of trouble with this. Over time, slavers formed an alliance and made rules for their own, so they can protect themselves and prevent angering monsters that may have the power to destroy mountains.
"We treat most slaves decently. We also try to sell carefully as well. Like, if a certain noble, with a bad reputation, wants to buy a bunch of children, we either say no or lie. We have our own traditions and morals for our trade. In fact, we became more successful for it. It's obvious now, but with well fed and well treated slaves, they became more valuable.
"We have five types of slaves. Criminal, war, debt, willing and born. Criminal, debt and born are obvious. War slave, are those captured from an enemy nation, by soldiers. Usually other soldiers, but sometimes an entire village. Willing slaves are those who sell themselves into slavery for certain agreed upon conditions, and or to give money to someone."
'Interesting, I just got a history and slavery lesson, all in one.' Nolan looked to Celine. 'Now that I think about it, how did these two become slaves in the first place?'
Trevor spoke up again. "We would like to have a summoned or two, who isn't crazy and willing to listen to reason. It also helps that we can prepare for what is coming. Would you be willing to do some jobs for us?"
"Sure, as long as I can say no to some that won't work for us."
Trevor smiled. "That's good. Now, what is your special ability?"
"Well, since we need to trust each other, I can gain abilities from eating the hearts of my kills."
"Monsters or people?"
"Either, but I haven't tried a person yet."
"Yet?" Trevor gave him a questioning look.
"If I get attack by bandits, I'm going to see what I can get."
"Understandable, what have you gained so far?"
"Goblin hearing and advanced healing."
Trevor smiled widely. "Now that sounds valuable for me already. Do you plan to register at the adventurers guild?"
"Yeah, we intend to talk about a few things first, then register."
"Good, let me know the results of the test."
"Do you know what the test is?"
"Well, first they will test your magic affinity, then your mana size. After that, they will put you up against an actual member. If you do well, then you can become a D-rank. After that, you earn your way up over time."
"I see, thanks."
"Your welcome. Go, make your preparations and I will inform my friends of this news. I won't tell much about you, till we find a job or two for you to do. Goodbye."
"Later." Nolan and his group left the slaver's shop and then went back to the tavern. After ordering food, since he barely at anything, they stated talking. "Alright Celine, did you get any more books?"
"Yes, I got Adventurer's Guide. It has the rules and expectations of the guild."
"Good, first we go back to the goblin dungeon and talk. Sadly, I feel safer to talk there." Nolan walked out the gates with a determined look. 'I wonder if I can get a special bonus from other summoned?'

A Cleric's Life for me.
This is a casually written story loosely based on TTRPG games like DnD and Pathfinder. The attempt of the story is to have a slow growth in power and comical set of characters who eventually grow close and set off for more serious adventures. There will be plenty of familiars and funny tales that don't involve combat. The intention is not to be a goody-two-shoes cleric story where nothing bad happens. The intention for this story was a slow paced grungy story where everything seemed great at first and things just kept getting worse. I learned how shitty of a story that is to write and honestly I am just not good enough to get the idea down. I plan on revisiting it later.
