《The Country of Monsters》Chapter 11

A week after we came back to our camp, Lthrok’s group already arrived. To create a sustainable method for food production, I started introducing agriculture to orcs and goblins who have probably never grew a single plot of crops. I sent the cartography and hunting teams to search for vegetables and grain. Luckily, they were able to find corn, barley, wheat, cabbage, and carrot among some other vegetables. Also, because they were able to find vegetables which neither orcs nor goblins have seen being eaten before, I decided to test them on animals to see if they were safe. Being resourceful is extremely imperative in our case. If they ended up being safe, we could have more food resources and make full use of the seeds we were able to collect.

Since I was able to call a hundred monsters each day, we never had a lack of workforce. So, I made a farmer’s group to be responsible for agriculture and a much smaller husbandry group to be responsible for the rabbits and deer we were able to catch alive. I also asked Lthrok to create a taming group to find and tame wargs, both as a means of transportation and as a precaution for future warfare.

I was thinking of increasing the variety of animals and hopefully find an animal whose fur we can sheer and use to make clothes. The hares of the forest apparently quickly regrew their nice, thick fur once you sheer it, but the fur each of them could give was very little. I was hoping for a bigger animal, or maybe even a domesticated beast for this purpose.

Another possible way we could make clothes was also by agriculture, of course. If we could find cotton, or something similar enough, we would have a sustainable production of clothes for all. Currently, only less then quarter of our entire population was clothed properly while the rest were sing the loincloths that they passed through the portal into this world with.

Houses for everyone and more were already completed, and as we numbered well above a thousand, our “camp” was hardly a camp anymore. Logging was nonetheless continued for future members and agriculture was taking place in the logged, vacant land to the east and northeast.

Because of our swiftly increasing population and use of land, I decided to call this place a town. I assembled a council of the directors, including Gobu, Gobi, Gobo, Lthrok, and Ghyurl. It was Gobo who spoke:

“Chief, we should name this place after you.”

“No, that sounds very narcissistic.”

“I agree with Gobo, Chief. You made this possible.” said Ghyurl.

“I would prefer if it was named after the forest.”

My proposition sparked interest in the group. It was only Ghyurl and Lthrok who resided in this forest before I came to this world.

“Harren.”

“Then this town will be called Harren from now on. Any objections?”

I bet most of them really wanted to name this place after me. Still, my proposal intrigued them. All of the looked happy indeed.

“Harren, what a wonderful name!”

“Also paying respect to the dignified land it is built on. What an honorable decision!”

“Great name Chief!”

“Harren it is then.”

So, our first town was called Harren.
