《The Country of Monsters》Chapter 7

I turned to Gobo, standing next to me in as much confusion as I was in.
“What the hell is a caller?”
“I have no idea Chief.”
“Gobi?”
“Sorry Chief, I have no idea either.”
As the screams of joy ceased, the leaders of the orc tribe started speaking.
“My brothers and sisters: I pledge my honor to the Caller we have waited for hundreds of years. Our tribe will follow his orders and his orders only. I am no more the Chief.”
“Hey, can you tell me what you mean by caller?”
“OH? I would not think the Caller himself would be unaware of the name he has been given. Hundreds of years ago, an orc shaman gave a prophecy in this forest. It is connected to an old tale that many chose to ignore by now. Thousands of years ago a supreme magician was able to open a gate to another world which was governed by men and had no monsters. The magician was able to see through the gate he opened, but no men could enter through it. Then, he decided to test the gate by pushing monster into the other world at the end of the gate and, surprisingly, the gate could easily be crossed by monsters while it was closed to men. However, the more monsters that the magician forced through the gate, the hungrier the gate got until it finally devoured an entire country, taking the monsters into the other world while killing every other thing. The prophecy was that a caller would appear in this forest, enclosed by the mountains, and call the monsters of the other world into this world. The Caller is the savior of our brethren trapped in the other world by evil magic.”

“I bet the prophecy did not mention that the Caller would be unaware of all this.”
“It also did not mention that he would be a human.”
“I see you do not get too well along with humans, orc.”
I thought to myself – what is this fiasco? Am I destined to keep bringing goblins and orcs from a world I cannot enter myself? If you think about it, the gate I open is different than the gate the magician supposedly opened thousands of years ago. Surely, I cannot enter through it. But the goblins could not enter either. Moreover, the tale talks about the magician seeing the other side, while the gates I create are opaque and do not let me observe what is behind.
Well… as long as we can get along with the orcs for now because they think I am “the Caller”, going along with the childish tale does not seem so bad.
“I am called Murder, orc. What is your name?”
“Ghyurl, Chief.”
“Will your tribe join us?”
“If you wish, Chief.”
If they join us for whatever reason, this does not only eliminate the orc threat, but will provide us with better equipment, higher labor force, and knowledge of this world since all the monsters I bring through the gates know virtually nothing about this world.
“Join us. All your tribe members are welcome to join as well as long as you do not invoke any conflicts with goblins.”
…
Long story short, we assimilated the entire orc tribe, originally led by Ghyurl. After every orc from Ghyurl’s tribe joined our tribe, he stepped down as a chief so I can be the only chief in our community of orcs and goblins.
I ordered all the goblins to settle around the orc camp and leave the cave behind. Using both the cave area and the orc camp as settlement locations would divide the workforce into two. While this sounds smart especially because our population now including the orcs from the orc camp is above 600, starting from a single point would probably be better for the quality of the settlement. Perhaps, if we become much more populated, we could develop that cave into a hide-out or build another camp around it.

Receiving axes and logging equipment from the orcs, the goblins soon started logging and construction outside the walls of the camp. This time, I first ordered the construction of my house – I thought that I should exploit being called a caller. However, even the house I ordered to be constructed was not fully developed or eye-catching. In fact, it was only a little bigger than normal houses goblins had some experience building.
I felt exhausted – perhaps this was the most exhausted I felt after opening a gate. Was it because I also unconsciously brought orcs through it, or was it because I absorbed Mhood’s life energy? I put the unpleasant feeling aside and started helping with the constructions.

Gobbo
Its not easy being green. Or any other color. Life's just kinda shit in general. At least it is for a goblin trying to survive on their own.
