《New Escape》New Escape Chapter Twelve

Old note said I hate this chapter, so I really won't read it, but I remember hating it so.
**
I first saw Maddy around two years ago in the school commons, I remember taking an interest in her, not that I ever did anything about it. The only class I have had with her is physics which we are both currently in. Two months ago I confessed my attraction to her but we remained friends. After the release of Second World we both got the game, and I wasn't expecting to meet her until much later but we happened to run into each other.
Her hair is pulled back into a bun, the wind causes wisps of her brown hair to dance around her hairline. She is wearing leather armor with a cloak over her shoulders, the hooded black cloak covers most of her body. She smiles at me as I make my way towards her. Her blue eyes seem to look into my very being.
I feel calm now, more calm than I have felt in the game so far. This calm is contradictory though, while I feel calm I also feel slightly tense.
I wish to give Maddy a hug but decide not to as I value my life and don't want to force it on her.
"So you are the one helping the towns people?" I ask Maddy though there is only one answer.
"Yeah, I started here and they taught me different survival skills, so I decided to help a bit."
"That's cool, mind if I help too?" I offer Maddy my assistance.
"Sure go ahead."
I stand next to Maddy not knowing what to do and watch as she begins to set up some sort of trap for the bandits.
"Ah, do you need anything dug? I can cut out the time it takes to dig any holes or pile any dirt." I offer one of my few services.

Maddy points out a few places that need pits, so I send Ceres to go dig them.
"What time will the bandits be here?"
"They usually come once a week, they should be here tomorrow. We are setting the trap in advance so we don't run out of time."
"I see."
I continue following Maddy around making small talk occasionally. I get worried that I'm bothering her so I go back to Malek and tell him what is going on, then I bring him over and introduce them to one another.
"This is Malek, he's the one who I told you about at school." I gesture towards Malek.
"Oh the creepy one." Maddy nods in understanding, though a little blunt she does remember what I said about him.
"Haha- I can't really deny it." Malek nods awkwardly as I introduce Maddy to him.
"This is my friend, she goes by Raven in the game."
"Oh, she's the one who has been helping the town?"
I nod towards Malek to answer his question.
As the sun begins to set we build camp and prepare for a battle tomorrow.
-
Once the sun came back up I greeted Malek and Maddy and we began waiting for the bandits. During the wait I got bored of reading and started playing with Maddy's hand.
The sound of people travelling through the forest broke the slightly tense atmosphere, everyone moved to their stations. The bandits began entering the clearing, after they had all begun travelling to the other side the towns people popped up from behind shrubbery and began firing projectiles at the bandits. Attempting to respond the bandits began charging towards the towns people, but fell into the pitfall traps Ceres dug.
Maddy used throwing knives to attack the group of bandits.

After the initial surprise the bandits attempted to retreat back out of the clearing, to intercept them I used [Nature Manipulation] to cut off their escape.
The remaining bandits placed their weapons on the ground and raised their arm, the towns people spared them and bound them. I restored the pits and we bound the surviving bandits who fell down.
The battle was over before it had begun due to the traps and surprise. The towns people, Maddy, Malek and I returned to the town with the bandits in tow.
After returning to the town Maddy turned in her quest to the Town head, I waited for her in the tavern with Malek.
"Ugghhh that was hardly any fun, using traps is boring. At least none of the towns people were harmed."
"I think that was an effective use of your current abilities." Malek attempts to cheer me up a bit but it doesn't work.
After thirty minutes of chatting with Malek Maddy finally walks into the tavern.
"Hello Maddy!" I call out to her to get her attention.
"Hello." She sits at the table and we begin to discuss future plans.
"Would you like to travel together? Malek is taking me to some sort of forest, and we might find some other adventures on the way."
"Sure that sounds good, when will we go?"
"Well we can start after school tomorrow, is that good?"
"Yeah that's fine. Well I'm going to log off, talk to you tomorrow." Maddy says goodbye as she prepares to leave.
"Seeya tomorrow!"
We both log off and I eat before browsing the web.

Candor: The Forgotten House
*** Please read note below *** As a 16-year-old mage from a powerful family, Jayce Candor had known from a young age what his future would hold. As the fourth son in his family the possibility of him becoming the heir to the household was very small. But, with his talent as a mage, his potential accomplishments in the military could lead to titles of nobility and political power. However, on what would otherwise be an unremarkable night, everything he had ever known, the only people he ever cared for, and all of the plans for his future were destroyed. House Candor, one of the six great houses that helped build the Eldoran Empire had been erased from history. By imperial decree, all those bearing the name Candor were hunted down and executed as traitors of the Empire. With no home, no family, and only death waiting for him, Jayce decided to escape north to the uncharted Northern Territories to begin a new life. Forced into situations he was never prepared for and trying to cope with his past, Jayce tries to find safety in a place spoken about only in legends. There for the first time, he will make true friends and find people he will come to see as family. He will encounter strong enemies, build powerful alliances, and become a person his ancestors would be proud of. But surrounded by creatures he thought only existed in tales and pressed by the Empire’s constant expansion, Jayce’s safety may be only an illusion. To survive a world fraught with danger Jayce will need to grow stronger with each new experience and rebuild his once forgotten house. ********************************************************************** Note: The story starts slow. Although there is more action as the story progresses, there is a fair amount of introspection and character introduction in the first 30 chapters. Jayce is the main character, however, other characters play a large role and the story is seen through multiple POV's. This is a draft, it is not a finished work. This is not a story that focuses on an OP MC who beats up on weaklings. At times there can be a fair amount of internal monologue. Some of that may be edited out when I rewrite the story. I decided to keep it in the draft because I think it is better to have too much material rather than too little when I edit. Constructive criticism is appreciated as it helps in the editing and rewriting process. Check out my other story Shattered Mind here

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.

Kichiro's Rampage
Meet Kichiro, the son of a samurai. A social outcast, he leaves his home with nothing but a musket and a sword, determined to carve himself a niche in a chaotic world of dragons and leviathans. This fiction incorporates LitRPG elements, but it's not set in a VR. It's set in a fantastical world based loosely on East Asia in the 16th and 17th Century, when the Ming Dynasty was on its last legs, with the addition of magic and monsters. I totally stole the stat tables from Exterminatus, the author of Everybody Loves Large Chests, so let me credit him for that. I'm new to writing so please don't hesitate to criticise, and reviews would be greatly appreciated.
