《I.D. Tech》Chapter 13: Van Gone

It's Monday, January 12th, 12:30pm.

James, Michael and Thomas are getting ready to eat lunch. They've already ordered their food and are waiting.

"So anyway Thomas, I thought you should know we are planning a heist on a museum. We've decided to steal a Van Gogh painting."

"Let me guess… you're using Michael for this heist?"

"Yes I am. Listen, I figured out that I can see a live video on my laptop of whatever Michael sees."

"That's completely bonkers. The I.D.Tech just keeps surprising me."

"Well in the future I plan to run more tests with it."

"I see…."

“In a couple of hours we are going to figure out how to disable the museum’s security system.”

“I will see if I can find the security room,” Michael says after listening to James and Thomas speak for 10 minutes straight.

“Anyways Thomas, I’m sorry I dragged you into this mess. I’m actually beyond sorry.”

“Well. I was kinda tired of working at Skye Corporation anyway. My life was becoming too boring haha.”

“Well you will see plenty of action in the next few days. And when we do steal the painting, we have to be ready to board a flight to Paris.”

“I’ve always wanted to go to Paris… I mean I’ve been to Paris in Ontario several times,” Thomas says with a laugh.

The 3 men eat their meal, and then go back to the hotel where they discuss the plot to steal the Van Gogh painting.

“Michael, after you manage to crawl out of the ventilation system and get out of the building I need you to walk a couple blocks to the Holiday Inn and follow the one way street when going there. The police won’t be going down this one way street so don’t worry. Thomas will be driving the getaway vehicle which will be my SUV and he will be waiting there.”

“Sounds good.”

“As for the security system. I will make a fake I.D. for Michael to use. Michael will pose as an electrician that has to gain access to the security room.”

“So everyone understands what they need to do?”

“Yes.”

“Good. I will work on the fake I.D. right now. Tomorrow will be show time.”

*Tuesday, January 13th, 3pm*

“Alright James I’m parked in front of the Holiday Inn,” Thomas says on a burner phone.

“Good. I will tell Michael to enter the museum.” James hangs up his burner phone.

James puts on his headset and says into the microphone, “Okay Michael enter the building and ask one of the security guards to direct you to the security room.”

“Hey. I was wondering. I’m told I have to replace some lights in the security room. Can you direct me to where it is?”

“Sure,” the security guard tells Michael.

Both of them walk down the hallway and turn left. There’s a room at the end of the hallway that says ‘security’ above the door.

“Okay here it is. I will open the door and tell them you will be doing work.”

The guard knocks on the door. Another guard opens it. “Who’s this guy?”

“He told me he has to replace some lights in the room.”

“Well I need to see some I.D. from him.”

Michael gets out his fake I.D. that has the name Lucas Jones on it. On the card states his company’s name and his position.

“I’ve never heard of this electrical company before. And I don’t think they ever have a contract with this museum.”

James tells Michael to get the security guards to check their email.

“Can you check your email?”

“Okay give us some time Lucas.”

The security guard opens the email which has the following written:

“Hello,

This is Sarah MacNeil (The owner of the museum).

We have accepted a new contract from Total Electrical. They will begin work starting today.

You will probably see someone from Total Electrical who needs to gain access to the security room. Please allow him to work there. I want all of you to go to the break room in the meantime.

Thanks,

Sarah”

James has managed to hack Sarah’s email and create a totally legitimate looking letter.

“Well Lucas, come right in. There’s actually a light in here that flickers. I’ve complained about it for sometime now because it gives me headaches.”

“Okay I will take a look at it.”

The security guards exit the room and now Michael is the only one in there.

“Michael, I will give you instructions for how to deactivate the cameras.”

“Okay sounds good.”

10 minutes later the system is deactivated. There’s looping videos playing on all the monitors but they are from days ago. The sensors in the back of the paintings are still operational.

Michael walks to the janitor’s room. He pulls the fire alarm handle. He waits a couple of minutes before exiting the room.

Michael snatches the Van Gogh painting. This triggers the silent alarm for more police officers to arrive.

“Okay Michael you have approximately 5 minutes.”

Michael enters the janitors room with the painting in hand. He takes off his hard hat and vest. He next grabs the allen keys and begins unscrewing all the screws. This takes a minute. He then wraps the painting in the fire blanket and enters the vent.

“Damn it’s a tight squeeze in here.”

Michael makes it all the way down the end of the ventilation system and can feel cold air coming from outside. He tries pushing the cover. It won’t open.

“Hey James there seems to be a problem. We never considered the fact that the cover here probably has screws too.”

Fortunately the cover is made from a bendable material. Michael manages to bend the top half strips of metal upwards and the bottom half strips of metal downwards. There’s now a nice hole for Michael to squeeze through.”

Michael makes it to the top of the roof. He only has 1 minute left. He acts quickly and throws the painting onto a snowbank. The soft snow cushions the painting’s fall. Michael then jumps off the roof onto the snowbank.

“Good work Michael,” James tells him.

Michael has the painting in hand and is running down the one way street. He hears the fire trucks and police sirens coming closer. Michael runs out of breath and stops half way.

“I have to stop quickly. My legs are burning and I can’t breathe.”

“That’s fine. Take half a minute to relax.”

Michael continues running down the street. He sees an older couple looking at him in a weird way. He shrugs off their glances and eventually makes it into James’ SUV.

“Hell yeah I did it!”

The 2 men make it back to the hotel and Michael is holding the painting.

“So what do we do with the painting? They will inspect it at the airport.”

“Actually I will be mailing it in a UPS box and shipping it to a storage company in Paris. The police never check UPS boxes.”

"That’s actually genius.”

“Well they probably know the painting is gone by now.”

“Hahahaha. Vincent Van Gone.”

The 3 men laugh and Jame’s packs the painting in a box where he will drop it off at the UPS center.
