I snapped awake as the car jerked to a stop. Rubbing my eyes, I avoid the awkward silence that existed like a barrier between me and Riley.
Yet, my eyes couldn't help but look at her lips that were thinned like a line. The way she flared her nose when she stared straight ahead and that little fire in her brows. There was no way to feel upset at her when the bun she stuck her hair into, gave her that mature womanly feeling.
Her eyes flickered to mine and her lips slipped right into that mischievous smirk that she often does when playful. "You going to get out or stare at me all day?"
I didn't say a word or move until someone knocked on my door. Reluctantly tearing my gaze away, I turned to Amala with her frizzy hair braided back into a single strand.
"Why did we stop here?" Amala asked.
I opened the door and stepped out. The parking lot had few cars and even fewer bodies. Some sported orange jumpsuits but the number all together didn't reach ten. My gaze scanned over the ten foot tall fence and the thick brick walls. The bridge that spans across a moat of concrete.
"I was thinking the reason why a military base is good is due to the fortification. But are we the only ones who will think about that?" I rambled as I walked towards the bridge.
It didn't take long for car doors to slam as people rushed to catch up with me.
"I don't know if you guys watched The Walking dead but they held a former prison and were able to raise crops." I lectured. "Unlike the walking dead which was set in the early two thousands, our modern jails are much more fortified. Thus if we clear it and take it over, we won't have many fears."

Licking my lips, I eased open the door. Someone grabbed it as I bent down to grab the corpses. I easily dragged it up and over the side of the bridge. The thick thud made most of us flinched.
"We might have to go down there and burn those." The old man muttered which brought all of our attention to the stream of corpses.
Guess that explains what happened to the rest of the crowd.
The butt of my AR slammed into my shoulder, the flashlight attachment flickered on, and I took the first steps in.
"Two on me, two on Amala, and the rest help the others start bringing stuff into the lobby. Block the door with something." I instructed.
They carried out the command quickly. I moved down one direction while Amala headed in the other. The halls were empty and quiet. Messy but that is to be expected. Actually, I was sure this jail had a backup power but someone cut it off.
"This is like a maze." Pretty boy said.
"Makes it easier to defend." The old man replied.
We reached an area with an electronic door but I broke the door knob. It took a few seconds to work the darn thing out the hole. Walking through the door was like walking through a mall and finding yourself in an entirely new area with indoor swimming pools and the like.
The floors were cleared. No signs of blood or corpses. Licking my lips, I studied this section clearly and realized this might be the armory. We quickly walked upon a thick metal door open wide.
"Wow, we got to the armory a little too quickly. Just under fifteen minutes walk and it's still fully equipped." The old man muttered as he touched a row of riot shields.

We checked behind us and found a couple halls leading to some rooms with bunk beds, a lounge, and a room with a lot of monitors. A few even had blinking lights.
"Search carefully. There should be a power box.." I stumbled to a stop as a loud clicking noise sounded out. Followed by deep rumbling sound before the lights cut on.
The old man had his hand on a switch behind a set of cabinets. "Look what I found." He chuckled.
"Well, that's great. Let's crank these up. It'll make our search much easier." I looked around for the main pc.
We searched pretty hard but it was a pretty boy that found a room that had a server stack. We powered everything up and waited on the boot up system which was quite fast.
In a matter of minutes, camera footage was pulled up on all screens. Amala's group was assisting with moving in. On top of that, the jail was surprisingly empty. There were, of course, corpses in orange jumpsuits but none living. Unless they were faking.
"There is a work shed near the yard. Let's see if there is a wheelbarrow or tarp. So we can clear out this place." I said as I memorized the route.
We somehow got lost but eventually made our way to the yard. It was much larger than I expected with what looked like plots of corn and tomatoes off in the distance. Right in front was a typical basketball court circle by a track for running.
"This is bigger than my high school football field." Pretty boy said.
I agreed and made my way towards the shed. It was a decent walk down a dirt path sided by low grass. The shed from the camera looks like an actual shed but this was a barn. No lock on it which was odd. I threw open the door and stood dumbfounded.
"Okay, I didn't know jails needed so much landscaping equipment." Old man said in shock.
"How else will they turn these scum into productive citizens?" Pretty boy asked as he stormed in and dragged a wheelbarrow out.
It was quicker to get back in but picking up corpses on the way was annoying. Some had missing body parts, while others just had broken skulls. Thankfully, I was pushing the wheelbarrow.
Sadly, it was well into the night when we finished clearing the jail. We lit them on fire and headed back in to find a decent cell which wasn't hard. There weren't a lot of inmates to begin with and the jail had four major blocks with twenty cells each. Two bunk beds in each.
The amazing thing was the hot shower and working kitchen which a few women made use of. Which left me feeling full but extremely tired.
