《The Sword Maiden》Chapter 2: The Silver Aurelia

“Students of the 279th intake. Allow me to lastly offer you my congratulations and my warnings. In entering St. Florin's Academy, you have achieved a feat both your families and yourselves can be proud of. As prospective knights and witches—”
At the word 'witches', an unerring silence resounded throughout the grand auditorium. In that instant, not one of the students sitting the enrolment ceremony let out a breath.
“—of the Carnelian Chapter, you will be entrusted to repay the faith we have placed in you by demonstrating your resolve, your commitment, and your dedication to the teachings of this esteemed academy.”
Nobody had flinched, as far as Mireille could tell. The tension was present, but there was no murmur of dissent, nor shifting of any seats during the pause in speech. In the end, the uncertainty and unfamiliarity in the air was just enough to cause a single goosebump.
For now.
Maybe it was because everyone was starting from the same page. Or maybe it was because the aura of command emitted by the principal invited no reply, even in assent. Her diction was crisp and formal. Her posture straight and unbending.
Her sword gleaming and unconquered.
Principal Madelane Priscelia.
Former captain of the Carnelian Knights.
The Silver Aurelia.
“Should you succeed in your studies at St. Florin's Academy, you will be invited to take the oath of allegiance to the patron of this institution, Her Royal Majesty, Grand Duchess Velia the Fifth, and so bind yourself in service to the city-state of Berylcross.”
Principal Priscelia allowed a further moment of silence to pass.
“Those of you wishing to pursue other paths will have the knowledge and the foundations to excel in delivering the ideals and values of this academy. But for those of you who wish to pledge yourselves in the First Chamber of the Imperial Palace, make no mistake. The trials and tribulations you would face as knights and witches of the Carnelian Order will pale in comparison to the tasks you will complete in your training. Once you take that vow, only blood will release you from your obligation.”

A smattering of gulps could be heard.
Principal Priscelia smiled.
“. . . Or a retirement to teach at a school.”
And . . . breathe.
A low chorus of giggles faithfully answered her. Mireille saw more than a few shoulders drop in relief, as if they were finally permitted to enjoy the benefits of oxygen.
Mireille felt her admiration for the principal rise. Even for a famous knight, smiling and making jokes looked natural to her.
“In closing, I would say this—”
Principal Priscelia stepped to the side, away from the podium shielding her figure. Even now, she still wore the shining cuirass over her faculty uniform. The one which had protected her during the War of Ascension.
“—We are privileged to be in a time of great change. But it is not merely vigilance we must display, but understanding. Many unknowns have permeated into our lives, but this is how the world has always been, and this is how it shall always continue to be. Whatever path you choose at the end of your studies, commit to your footsteps in the knowledge that you carry the expectations and the belief of every man and woman to have walked before you.”
A pause. Everyone, including the instructors watching on from the sides, had matched their posture with The Silver Aurelia, whose hand had crept to the hilt of her sword.
“But until that time, you will be expected to fulfil the role of a student.”
Principal Priscelia drew forth her sword.
At once, a faint mist formed, beginning at her hips and rising to encompass her outstretched arm. Her eyes penetrated the watchful, waiting crowd.
“Knight cadets and witch adepts of the 279th intake. Students of St. Florin's Academy. Remember my words. Learn. Fall. And triumph.”

Ancient cities, abandoned starships, temples and fortified bunkers all contain artefacts and devices far in advance of what humans have been able to produce. Technology that feels more akin to magic, so powerful it can allow a single person to dominate a star system. But these relics of another time have been left well-defended and behind bewildering and impenetrable security measures. There are those who are compatible with the alien technology, who can augment themselves to face the evermore extreme protocols in the depths of the alien ruins, and by doing so attain greater power. And there are those who just want to sell what they find to the highest bidder. The rewards are high, but you have to be prepared to go further and risk more to discover the greatest secrets of a civilisation that vanished long before the first human walked upright. Secrets that could irrevocably change humanity’s future, or end it.

8 197Sand, Clouds, and Steel
Thearth. A sand planet with little to offer. Only the great crawler cities provide any form of permanency other than the great desert. Continuously roaming the sands in search of clouds, the only source of water, and quite possibly the next great Vortex. A being/machine/creature or something else entirely that forms a massive floating island and provides the other essential resource necessary for life, Aserite. It is used to power everything and anything. People cannot just take it as they will. They must fight the Vortex's guardians to claim the almost magical resource. This is a dungeon core storm story that I am working on in my free time. Please feel free to leave constructive criticism as I want to grow as an author.
8 177A World With or Without Aliens
Nothing matters. It's not my opinion, it's a scientific fact. This is neither good nor bad, it just... is. I watched my entire country burn, fried on a patriotic pan after some jerk fired a bunch of nukes at the docile fleet of alien ships hovering over us. Who gave this moron such power? I don't know. Everyone involved is most likely dead by now. As for me, I can't die. I feel pain like a normal person would (I think), but no matter how terrible the conditions, I will never die or pass out. Fortunately, a lot of alien technology survived its crash to Earth, so I get to spend some time playing with it until Mr. Author gets bored and decides to screw up my life. Beware, this has a "harem" tag. If you haven't figured it out yet, I'm the main character and am therefore subject to this novel's timeline. While this bars me from the sweet ignorance of Chapter 1's me, it does have other perks... for example, I can tell you that heroine number one is personally responsible for kil-!? H-hey, back off! I'm your character, so if you didn't want me to be like this, then you should've written me differently! Randomguy here! In all seriousness, this novel is meant to explore the concept of nihilism as a post-apocalyptic/supernatural-scifi/satire told from a nihilistic introvert's first-person perspective. As you heard from my unsettled main character, each heroine is going to be a different type of horrifying socio/psychopath with dark motives and dangerous abilities (most of which are psychological). Why would I do something like this? Because I am, in reality, a nihilist who is often frustrated by weird things, like unrealistically dramatic stories, the industrialization of art (specifically music), and people who think swimming in brown creekwater for five hours is a "fun" activity. Don't get me wrong, neither me nor my character are depressed, we're just malcontents who make a lot of nerd references. I feel like the true essence of an "everything is worthless" perspective is lost on most pop-culture figures. The closest character I can think of at the moment is Rick from Rick and Morty, who is a drunk, angry nihilist that experienced tremendous loss. I, personally, find this belligerent state of mind to be very relatable, and have incorperated it into every chapter's introduction. Here, the main character talks directly to the reader (and me), shamelessly complaining about some semi-relevant facet of society, which probably doesn't make much sense... it's not really supposed to, though. These "angry nihilist" moments are just a peak into the main character's everyday existence, and also act as miniature rage-journals for me. It will sometimes take a subjectively 'positive' turn, but not very often. This is because reality isn't good or bad, "it just... is". I will eventually bring it full-circle to optimistic nihilism, since that seems to be a more practical way to live (and by "practical", I mean "doesn't create mental health issues"). It is, of course, a satire. I did this because most unnecessarily emotional moments or people usually make me feel kind of awkward, so I decided to mock them. That is, I plan to mock the characteristics about them I don't like in characters based solely off said characteristics. Thanks for reading, and I hope you enjoy my story!
