《Nano Mage》Chapter 5 Magic school entry exam

We had spent the whole night practicing different spells. Each spell was the basic one from the book. Every time I would cast the spells the results were the same. Fireball, twelve launched at once. Aqua burst, nine jets formed. About those jets of water, they were immediately taught to me after the maid’s bed chambers caught on fire from my previous spell. The only exception was lightning blast. Lightning blast was a straight shot of electricity from my hands. Lightning blast did not feel the same as the rest of the spells, it made me feel like my old self briefly.
The maid quickly grew fearful of me, but soon pushed through that fear. By the way it turns out the maid’s name was Vivian. Vivian told me something interesting, after letting her know I felt slightly dizzy after casting the lightning blast spell. Apparently that is how I should have felt after casting my very first spell. So if that were the case, what was the difference between it and the rest of the spells?
In the next few days Vivian has taught me to both read and understand the shine language. I find it really strange that I picked up the language so fast. First of it took me almost nine years to learn french. Strange I remember learning a language, but when and where? I was told by Vivian I was a quick study. The part that really left we wondering, is how fast I learned to read it. The symbols normally would not have made any sense to me. I know for a fact I can not read Japanese, so why was I able to understand this gibberish?
The shine language was made up of curves, and each curve differed only by length. Most of it was like the letter C. Only in all four directions. A small curve facing left, a large curve facing up. A jumbled mess any way you looked at it. How was it I grasped it all so quickly. “I never knew anyone from the mythic continent able to read the shine language.” There it was again, mythic continent. Just what was that place where English was spoken regularly. Of course I understood not being able to read this language.

“What is the story with the mythic continent?” Vivian gave me a look like I was a complete idiot. No wonder, she thought I was from that place. “How could you not know? The mythic continent was established nearly fifty eight years ago. Over the decades it has changed radically. In the last nineteen years no one on the continent has given birth.” If I compared it to my current year, that would make it nineteen ninety nine. “Why the birth decline?” I asked Vivian. “No one really knows. Something about the mythic continent was bugging me.
After witnessing my display with magic, Vivian made a suggestion. “Since you are able to grasp the shine language, it would be possible for you to attend magic school. If you study there I am certain you will become a spectacular mage.” (Becoming a mage huh? Wait I guess I am one already. But to honor the man that saved me I will become an amazing mage!) “The first step is to take the magic exam. It will occur in one month.” With that a was given a month to prepare.
Vivian informed me that the easiest part for me to pass would be the written exams. “If you mange to pass, then you will be the first person in history from the mythic continent to attend magic school. That would make me the best tutor ever!” Vivian winked at me.
Arriving at the magic school I was handed the written exam after forking over the entry fee. The shine currency were coins made from bone, which at first I thought were dyed blue, but as it turns out,, they are made from the tusk of sheep that shed them daily. I happened to see the process first hand. A sheep is needed to establish a new village, if one does not have a sheep, then it really is not a village. Vivian handed over a large sum to me before leaving. Only three coins remained in my pocket.

By the way I aced the written exam. One hundred and ten percent to be exact. I got the bonus question correct. The practical exam was a battle tournament. The first rule of the tournament was only magic could be used, although basic things like dodging, and blocking were aloud. Second rule, magic items of C class and below only. Third rule no killing. The final rule, which was apparently added two years ago, no raping. Some idiot forced themselves on a princess, impregnating her, forcing her to be disowned by the family.
The tournament was divided into nine groups, each group consisted of ten people. The format for the tournament was a round robin. The top three of each group would be attending the school, which would make twenty seven students in total.
My first opponent was known as Roaming Thunder. Before the match started we had ten minutes to introduce ourselves. I think this was so that once classes started, we would not feel isolated. The girl standing before me had violet hair going only as far as her neck, but those eyes locked me in. Deep golden eyes, with star shaped pupils. “I am Sylphire.” I stretch out my hand for her to shake it. She slaps it away. “Roaming Thunder.” She says under her breath.
“Begin!” Roaming Thunder just stands there not doing anything. I decide to make the first move. Thirteen lances of ice form just inches away from her. She lets out a strange sound of surprise, but quickly blocks them. I am preparing my next assault, when my body stops moving.
Roaming Thunder
(Who does this guy think he is? Is he mocking me?) This polite gesture of putting out his hand, he is from the mythic continent, meaning he is my enemy. But since when was someone from the magic continent able to read the shine language? What type of magic does he use? Those from the mythic continent generally get tired after casting a single spell, yet he plans to enter this school? I will not forgive anyone from that continent. I slap away his hand. “Roaming Thunder.” I mutter to myself.
“Begin!” I wait patiently to see what type of magic he will use. For a few minutes nothing, then I witness something unimaginable. It is the basic ice lance spell, but there are thirteen of them. (What the fuck? How is that possible? Is he really from the Mythic continent?) I dodge them of course, but somehow my heart starts beating in a strange rhythm. I wanted him to be my class mate, him a man from the mythic continent. Why?
While he was bewildered by my dodging skills I prepared my spell. As my spell grew stronger I noticed that his knees were starting to give out. (Why? Is this a trick?) I released my spell.
Sylphire
After my body suddenly stopped moving, her spell was heading directly towards me. I recognized the spell immediately. (Lightning blast!) It was the one spell that gave me a strange feeling when I cast it. The moment it hit me a pain other than an electric current washed over me. I screamed out in agony. This pain was very familiar. The numb blizzard sensation!

Shadow Falls
If you wanted to protect someone you loved, how far would you go, and what would you be willing to sacrifice? This question is at the core of this emotional rollercoaster of the book, Shadow Falls: the Rise and Fall of Erida VanIsle. This book emerged from four years of collaborative storytelling centering on the main character, Erida VanIsle, written by author Myra VanIsle. In this book, VanIsle goes beyond the events that led to Erida's sacrifice and explores forty-five years of the cost she paid to protect the sister she loved more than life itself. Shadow Falls explores the family tragedy which led to the separation of two sisters on completely different paths polar opposite of each other. While Erida set upon a path of darkness and power, Myra set out to be a beacon of light and hope bringing justice and peace to others. Be warned, the story VanIsle tells is dark and not easy, because you can't have the light without the dark.
