"They see me coooooookinnnnnng, they hatin'"
"Patrooooollinnnnng! Trying to make me wash the dishes!"
If anyone had looked into the kitchen at this moment they would be quite confused to see two eight year old girls singing random songs that where changed to fit their dubious work.
"I told you, we're old enough. We got this."
"Yeeeees we got thiiiis!" my own quite immature answer would teach anyone else otherwise.
We where once again cooking... this time under the supervision of my mother though. My father was in his new room working on some data he had to put out.
"Now, what did I tell you? No messing around in the kitchen. Don't want you to fall down again. Though I have to admit you two are fast learners."
My mother smiles at the both of us and helps us knead the dough. We were currently trying to make bread. Putting stress on trying.
She thought us mostly the basics about everything until now, meaning how NOT to use everything.
Don't touch the stove to check if it's warm.
Don't touch anything that came out of the oven without mitts.
And so on. We understood that stupid things could happen if we didn't behave in the kitchen and we also knew that my mother would probably ground me for a month if we did something like last time.
As for recipes, she thought us a lot of different basic things, meaning how to make noodles and rice for example. And of course how to properly roast meat, I especially loved that part.
Today my mom wanted to show us how to make the dough for bread and how to bake it. We were quite hyped about the whole thing.
"See? That's how you have to knead it." My mother smiled again as she showed us the proper way to handle it.
And of course me and Zoe where fooling around. We where children after all.
"Can we try some?" was my only question.
"Nooo, Alex, honey come on you wanted me to teach you this right? So how about at least trying to follow my instructions? And don't eat the dough, it's bad for you if it's not baked ok?"
"OOookkk" me and Zoe start copying her.
At this moment we can hear my dad curse dreadfully in his work room.
"For fucks sake WORK you piece of shit yo-"
Since we where only small children we barely understood half of what he was saying but his shouts where quickly followed by the sound of something being hit repeatedly afterwards.
"GODDAAMMMITT!"
I look at my mother with a confused face. And what I saw in her face wasn't the nice mother I was used to. This was somebody that just got very very mad.
"MARCUS!"
after shouting her husband's name once she looks at me with a gaze that could kill.
"Honey, Zoe please do not touch anything while I have a talk with Marcus ok?"
We simply nod and stop with whatever we're doing.
Shortly after my mom rushed out of the kitchen we can hear her voice resounding through the house.
"Marcuus?! Honey what did I tell you about swearing where the kids can hear it? I don't want Zoe to tell her parents where she learned some quite questionable words. And what did you do with the pc? We still need that you know?!"

My mother could get quite mad at some things. While we surely where not poor in any kind of way my mother did not think that we should throw money out of the window too. I once broke a lot of my toys because of a small accident and she was quite mad at it.
"Sophie, I'm sorry."
My dad once again instantly gave in.
"I need to get these files out by tomorrow and about 70 percent just got deleted while trying to convert them. And now I can't even recover them for some reason."
"That's no excuse to swear around. Just tell your boss that you'll need a little bit of extra time and it'll be alright. Show me some of it, maybe I can help you."
Both voices calm down considerably and soon we can't understand them anymore.
"Aleex? Your mom said not to eat the dough."
Telling me to not eat something that smells nice is like telling a gaming addict to stop playing. Not going to happen.
While my mother was talking to my dad I had been secretly sneaking more and more dough into my mouth.
It wasn't the best but still very tasty.
"But it tastes good."
"But Sophie sai-"
"Mom's not here. She's fighting dad again an-"
Zoe looks at me accusingly.
"SOPHIIEEEEEEEE?! Alex is eating doughhh!!"
"GAH traitooor! I'm NOT!"
Damn I'm busted. Still licking my fingers I wait for my mother to come back into the kitchen.
But she didn't seem to have noticed.
"Sophie?" Zoe asks into the house.
That's awkward, normally she would come running the moment I did something I wasn't supposed to do.
"Wanna go look?" I asked Zoe.
She shortly looks at me then nods. Both of us slowly walk out of the kitchen and through the living room.
"MooOom?" both of us walk towards the door of my dad's work room.
I slowly open the door and look inside.
"What's with these numbers, that can't be. This is simply impossible, absolutely impossible."
Both my mother and my father are sitting in front of a pc looking through some charts.
"Mom? We want to bake bread... I'm hungry."
While she turns around towards me I quickly notice that she looks quite stressed.
"Sweetie come on. Please don't bother daddy and me right now. I'll come in a bit ok?"
with a painful look on her face she motions me and Zoe to back off a bit."
I didn't know what the charts where all about. As a matter of fact I only knew that my dad worked in the logistics department.
He mostly organized different transports of literary anything. Thought... I was too young to really care.
"Did we do something wrong?"
Because of the face my mother made when looking at me I instantly had misunderstood it and thought that she was mad at me or Zoe.
"I'm sorry"
My dad turns towards me.
"Alex, darling please don't bother us right now, we can play with you later."
I started crying. I don't know why but I felt like I did something absolutely wrong.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
Something broke inside me, it felt like something unlocked inside of my brain. Something I didn't want.
"Alex, come on let's not annoy Sophie ok?"
I barely hear the voice of my best friend behind me as my view turns dark.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
"SOPHIE, something is wrong!"
I hear somebody step towards me and hug me.

"Alex, everything is fine, you did nothing wrong, everything will be ok, do not worry about it. Pleeaaaha?!"
The hands that had held me disappear and I hit the floor dumbfounded.
Without seeing anything I can hear something falling on the ground with a sickening sound. Instantly a disgusting smell surrounds me and takes away another one of my senses.
"Mom?" scared witless I ask into the void.
"Alexis, whatever happens. We love you." A weak coughing voice answers me.
"Mom, I can't feel my arms." something embraces me again. But it doesn't feel like a person.
Then I open my eyes and my vision returns to me.
"NOooOoooooOOOoo!!!" I look around.
In one corner Zoe looks around covered in black slime. Scared out of her senses she babbles incomprehensible sounds.
I am too covered in the same slime but it feels familiar. As if it was a living thing. Then I notice my arms. Large holes in my flesh show me what my bones look like.
I don't feel it.
I turn my face towards Zoe and she starts shivering uncontrollably.
"Zoe? What's happening?"
Turning her face away from me my best friend pulls out a small mirror and shows me my reflection.
I start screaming. What looks back at me doesn't seem alive anymore. Wounds with black borders cover the entire left side of my face and once more my bones show through. The most disturbing thing though is the small part of brain that can be seen through my head.
I don't feel it.
The black goo around me starts moving towards me.
"I don't want to, I don't want to, I don't want to."
Throwing the mirror away from me I collapse on the ground once more and the goo envelopes me.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I'm sorry."
The destroyed parts that get touched by the goo start burning terribly and small screams escape my throat again.
Then it reaches my brain.
"What did you do to her!!!?!?! You idiot!!"
Inside of the bedroom a young woman screams uncontrollably while the different pieces of furniture of the room get smashed instantly.
For the people trying to contain her it was pure hell.
A few minutes ago Captain Ithild had received a message telling her that the new recruit was having spasms while destroying her surroundings. She quickly had called for Liam and two more squad members.
After opening the door they had known that there was more going on than some simple spasms.
While two of her trusted members restrained her limbs their medic had taken a look at her eyes and deduced that she was in a state of absolute panic.
Then "it" came out. Her body started giving of a terrible smell and emitted a thick black slime. This slime dissolved everything it came in touch with, safe the woman's body.
Because of the danger everyone had backed off and without being able to even get close to her due to lack of equipment there was nothing they could do until their full equipment arrived.
At the moment Liam was shouted at by his captain.
"You fuck! If you don't fix this in the moment we get our equipment I will personally rip every single limb off that damned body! UNDERSTOOD!?"
Visibly scared the soldier simply nodded and answered.
"I can explain the spasms but I don't know anything about that substance I swear this by my life. I already contacted the brain but her thoughts are in shambles right now but I will calm her down."
"Why can I remember this?"
I view my surroundings.
Except for small patches the goo is entirely gone.
Zoe is still in the corner.
Where are my parents?
I don't feel anything.
With empty eyes I look towards my best friend. Parts of her skin are destroyed letting me see the different layers of meat and fat inside.
She's crying.
Why is she crying?
"Zoe? What exactly happened just then? And where are my parents? Did they have to leave for something?"
With fear in her eyes Zoe motions towards my father's chair.
"They turned into liquid. They turned into goo."
"What? What do you mean they turned into goo?"
Suddenly the left over black slime moves towards Zoe and wrapped itself around Zoe's hurt wrist.
"AAAAaaaH!" she screams once as I observe the slime apparently merging with her arm removing the wound entirely.
What's happening?
Different memories hit me. My first steps. Younger versions of my mother smile at me. Then the scene changes and I see my fourth birthday. Happiness overcomes me, somebody is talking with me.
"She looks so happy"
I start puking on the floor, it has the color of dark crimson.
Pictures I never knew, pictures I never wanted to see, everything hit me like a truck.
"I'm sorry."
"Where is everyone?"
"I'm sorry."
"Please don't leave me."
"Mom? Please don't leave me."
"I'm sorry."
"Please come back."
I collapse onto my own puke and start crying again.
Then somebody lifts me up and hugs me from behind.
"Calm down Alex. Please."
"I'm sorry Zoe. I don-"
A sharp pain runs through head and I open my eyes.
Around me five people clad in full metal look at me. I am strapped onto a bed and can't move.
My entire body is enveloped in a thick black slime.
It's cells that had broken away from my body and where now nurturing the new ones.
"She's back. At last you did something useful Liam."
A woman's voice talks out loud. I look around and quickly notice one of the visors sliding up and revealing a female face I've seen before.
I slowly start to realize what had happened. Everything had been a dream.
To say I was furious was an understatement.
With a croaking voice I turn towards Ithild.
"What happened?"
One of the other soldiers around me steps forward and his visor reveals the face of the soldier that had accompanied Ithild on her way to pick me up.
"I'm really sorry for what I have caused. I tried to give you happiness and failed terribl-"
I interrupted him.
"You thought this would make me happy!?!!?"
The shackles that bound me to my bed broke as I threw myself forward.
Extending one hand I jump in range of the cause of all of this.
"You DARED to mess with my brain?!"
Nobody steps in between us as I crash into him and push him against the wall. Black slime still covering most of my face.
Somebody puts his hand on my shoulder.
"Calm down Alexis please, I know he fucked up massively and I will punish him for what he has done. But most importantly right now you need to calm down and rest. I do not know what you saw. But please forgive him for now."
Ithild looked at me pleadingly. I knew she probably would grant me my wish if I wanted to hit him. But I gave up on the thought and backed off of him.
"Come with me Alex, I guess I got a lot of explaining to do. And you Liam, come with us if you would. Everyone else... You guys saw nothing got it?"
Everyone nods and turns away from the whole situation.
Confused and hurt I follow Ithild and a scared Liam as we walk through the different hallways and into a what seems to be a briefing room.
Sitting down in front of a table I turn towards the two full armored people.
"I want an explanation and I want it now!"
