Prologue: My former life
Kyoto Metropolitan Hospital, 26th May 2083
A woman with her legs on stirrups was in labor. Her beautiful face was contorted with pain, her cerulean eyes were gleaming with determination. Strands of her long straight raven hair were to her forehead with sweat.
She was a rare sight to this time and age, as none of the women nowadays chose the natural way to give birth to a child. These days most of them would have chosen either the in vitro or the cesarean, yet this strong willed woman willingly chose this.
On her left side holding her hand, was her husband his face pale. If it was due to the sight of his wife giving birth or of the herculean strength demonstrated by her during this time squeezing his hand almost to the point of breaking his fingers, no one could ever know, yet only worlds of encouragement came from his lips.
“You are almost there my love, just push one more time!”
“Just a little more Mrs Kurosawa!” the white head that appeared rising between her legs said.
It was the doctor, but to be specific, not just any doctor, he was actually a professor to the medic school in Tokyo, a 75 year old man and currently the only one in Japan that still was capable of assisting in situations like these.
The lights of the hospital were constantly flickering. The giant storm outside was a sight to be hold. Lightning in the sky caused the electrical power to go wild and it was at that time exactly that from this beautiful woman’s lips came a determined wild yell, one might say that it was a cry of defiance against the heavens, but in truth it was the voice of a mother filled with determination to bring the beloved child in her womb out in the world and into her loving embrace.
“Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!” , she screamed both in pain but in delight as well, as her offspring finally came out, but her screams was mostly muffled by the booming sound of thunder.
At this time all lights went black in Kyoto, including the hospital that the child was born in. The doctor who was still between the woman’s legs had the experience and calmness of mind that even in the dark he did his job and got a hold of the baby.

Yet, as soon as the lights came back on the reserve power generator kicked in and the doctor looked at the newborn in his arms, even him, the calm one, lost all color to his face.
“Akuma” he muttered upon laying eyes on the baby, that moments after birth opened its eyes to look at him.
Twenty years later….
Hitoshi Kurosawa was a twenty year old Japanese high school student. He was born and raised in the city of Kyoto Japan.
He would like to say that he was loved and respected by all, but unfortunately that was not the case. See, from the moment he was born, he was blessed (or truly unblessed according to him) with a serious case of a terrifying face.
Dark brown and unruly hair, squinty hazel eyes casting what seemed an eternal glaring stare that could only belong to a villain and a sharp jaw was his more prominent characteristics.
Still, his parents loved him as he was their first born and only child after years and years of trying to have a child and named him Hitoshi which meant even tempered, leveled.
And that’s what he was trying to be, while he was living with his loving parents, an even tempered and level headed child.
They were his only safe haven after receiving all kind of crap from the rest of the world due to his face. But even that, the cruel fate had to take it away from him.
Twelve years ago, when he was only 8 his parents died in an accident, after that it was the orphanage that took him in, but as all of us can guess, there was no one who would take in such an evil looking kid.
In reality, he was a kind person, his parents had after all taught him not to harm anyone and “turn the other cheek”, but after their death no matter how much he tried to, he couldn’t avoid trouble.
His face, that of a villain, was like a magnet for all the scum of the earth to come. In his face they saw the top dog, the arch demon that all those wannabees heroes had to defeat, while others seeked to join his gang and take advantage of the fear he was able to cause to rule the area by his side.

Even though he never did anything to provoke anyone, they still came at him, fists, kicks and all.
Even though he didn’t have a gang for them to join, as he was a solo guy (with people always targeting him, he didn’t want to put anyone at risk) they still seeked him out to join him, only to be rejected by him and be beaten afterwards due to not taking no for an answer.
So what was he supposed to do? Bend over and beg for the mercy of the ones provoking and attacking him? Hell no! He had done nothing wrong after all.
So, from kindergarten to high school he fought, not to dominate (although he did) but just to survive.
Thus the legend, circulating in all the high schools of Kyoto, as well in some other areas in Japan was created, that of the Bloody Dragon.
Rumors were that he faced a gang of 50 students from Kyoto High on his own and at the end of the fight he was the only one standing, drenched in the blood of his enemies.
Well, indeed something like that happened, but why the hell are those people exaggerating? It was not 50 people but 10 that he beat, but I guess from ear to ear what was once reality soon becomes an exaggeration and thus a legend is born.
Today would be his 20th birthday, the day when he would finally graduate from high school , since he had to repeat two years due to unfortunate events such as expulsions caused by beating one of the teachers that was harassing female students, beating the football, basketball, baseball-hell any team that tried to recruit him using violence, etc- and the day, when he would finally leave the orphanage as he was already an adult and he could no longer stay there.
He was walking the road from the orphanage to his high school, Kyoto’s 12th Public High School, as he always thought that walking was a great exercise and he could enjoy the great scenery while doing so, that is, all those pretty schoolgirls with their tightly fitting school uniforms, their short skirts blowing in the wind….
Ah! The spring had come! The sakura trees were in full blossom with their rose petals and the sweet aroma that they were transmitting in the air, only made him feel happier and happier.
Today judging from the weather alone would be a fine day. He was going to graduate. After that, according to his plans he was going to find a job (the orphanage’s management was kind enough to provide him with some job offers), get his own apartment and finally, finally, finally, possibly get a girlfriend!
Due to his nickname “Bloody Dragon” and the reputation proceeding him, not only none of his female classmates, but really none of all the female high schoolgirls and it wouldn’t be an exaggeration to say none of the female population in Kyoto was willing to approach him. So, at the age of 20 he was still without a girlfriend and woefully inexperienced in the art of making love.
It’s not that he hadn’t tried to approach the female population at all. After all, which healthy young boy could ever say that he hadn’t tried to get a girlfriend? Alas, so far all of his advances were rejected.
He had approached many of his pretty female schoolmates saying “Please go out with me!”, only to have the said girls running away screaming “The Bloody Dragon asked me to duel with him!” and the rest of their friends whispering “Wow, the Bloody Dragon’s thirst for blood knows no limits, he’s even after the girls!”…..
“But all of that is going to change after today” he told himself, pumping his fist in the air and thus causing the two females that were walking silently behind him, to cross the road running while whispering amongst themselves about getting away from the creepy guy.
But boy, was he ever wrong on that!

The Oresteia (Modernized)
All three of the great Greek Tragedians have written plays about the bloody chain of murder and revenge within the royal family of Argos. Yet theirs is in fact not a story of tragedy, but rather one of redemption. As they move from darkness to light, from rage to self-governance, from primitive ritual to civilized institution, their spirit of struggle and regeneration becomes an everlasting song of celebration to be heard throughout the ages. Forming a discourse set against the emergence of Athenian democracy out of a period of chaos and destruction, the Orestian plays are compelling stories of the tensions between our obligations to our families and the laws that bind us together as a society. In the beginning, we witness how a king’s decision to sacrifice his daughter and turn the tide of war inflicts lasting damage on his family, culminating in a terrible act of retribution. In the aftermath of regicide, we behold how a son must set out to avenge his father’s death by committing a most egregious sin. In the end, the sinner is tormented by supernatural powers that can never be appeased, but ultimately finds redemption and ends the curse on his house once and for all. Woven through all of this is the story of a friendship so close that it elevates itself to brotherhood - Where the blood of the covenant is shown to be indeed thicker than the water of the womb. In this very brief twelve-chapter modern rendition of the Orestian plays, I have chosen to place my focus mainly on the lives of the characters Orestes and his best friend Pylades. The chapters, each around 2000-2500 words, are split up evenly between them in first-person narrative. I hope that you will come to enjoy reading this heartwarming story, but more importantly, that you see how the conflicts portrayed in the story, whether human or institutional, are still much very relevant to our societies today. Note on Sources: The details of this story is very loosely based on The Oresteia by Aeschylus. And I mean very loosely. Other sources that I referenced for detail and inspiration are Mythology by Edith Hamilton, Electra by Sophocles, and Iphigenia in Tauris by Euripides. You may also find that I have quoted some of these works, and others (such as Shelley's Ozymondaeus), without citations (average of 1-2 such quotes per chapter). I did this because I do not have the ability to describe certain scenes nearly as well as some of those writers. If you read a particularly beautiful piece of prose here, chances are it's probably stolen lol. Also, I wrote this during the summer between my high school senior year and my college freshmen year. It was the summer of 2020, and being quarantined apparently gets my creative side out lol.
