《The Best General's Escape Plan》Chapter 18 - Rollercoaster of emotion

"This is not what we have talked about, White!"
Drey shouted towards outside their wagon directly in the direction of White.
Being forced to take cover because of the showering of arrows. Drey wasn't able to help himself but blame White for what's happening.
"I don't know!"
White shouted in response.
Hearing White's reply. Drey was fuming in anger because for him, White should have been able to deal with this since this is his job. Though half of that anger was causes because, he himself doesn't know what to do even though he is the main leader of the caravan.
Although he was the person entrusted by the Duchess of her daughter. He isn't exactly the type of person that could defend her and protect her physically.
He is only a merchant that has a connection with their family. His connection with people, his leading and speaking skills is what he exerts at, but in terms of fighting... He has simply no confidence.
The only thing he could do in their current situation is to entrust his life to the guy that is supposed to be part of the best army in the Kingdom and currently, that guy apparently doesn't know what to do.
'Why did I hire you then?'
He could just say that on his mind.
He wanted to really say it out loud, even in front of White if possible but he didn't as he is afraid that White might just turn to the enemy's side if he has done so.
"My lady, please don't venture out your head in the window. It's dangerous."
Drey warned. Looking at a young girl who is dressed in an expensive-looking dress as she tries to move the curtain away that is blocking the window to see what's happening outside.
When she heard Drey, she immediately stopped what she is doing and just smiled at Drey without seeming to not even have a bit of worry on her face.
With the smile being shown to him by the lady. Drey was only able to sigh and touch his head with his palm in helplessness.
'What am I going to do?'
...
Before everything turned sour for the caravan. Drey was indeed informed by White about a possible attack.
He was wary at first that White might have already known the secret behind the caravan, but with the explanation that White gave. He dismissed it pretty easily.
White said to him that with the current situation they are forced to be in, the possibility of getting attacked is high.
Them being in the open itself poses a big threat to the caravan as the enemy could just attack them anytime from the distance and they wouldn't really be able to do anything but continue.
"Look, we are all in the open. It's like we wanted to be attacked!"
Because of the road being sloped downwards, not just they couldn't retaliate against their enemy, they also wouldn't be able to retreat.

They will have no choice but to continue to move forward and hope that the bandits didn't set a trap towards the one road that the bandits know they would travel to.
Hearing White, saying about the bad things that could happen to them. Drey was becoming paler and paler.
Contrary to his reaction, he is not new to being attacked on the road.
Even though he is still quite young. He has a lot of experience traveling across the Kingdom.
Him traveling since when he was a kid made him one, if not the most experienced person on the caravan.
So hearing some news about getting attacked isn't new to him.
In cases where they weren't able to fight their enemy, they would just bribe them to let them pass.
After all, even bandits are humans too. They obviously don't want to shed unnecessary blood also.
But the case that he is in now is quite different. He's not just simply leading a caravan.
He was also in charge of the safety of a noble's daughter. And not just from a normal noble house but from one of the most influential family in the Kingdom.
'Why did I even choose this road! I just lead us all to our demise!'
He thought on his mind.
He could have chosen the safer route to go to their destination.
He continued.
In reality though. Even he knows that no matter what path he chose is going to be a gamble.
The task given to him by the Duchess is to hide the princess and get her to the easternmost part of the kingdom.
Him, knowing that the Duke himself has a lot of allies thought of this task as an easy feat at first. But all that's hope was blown into pieces when he hears the next words from the Duchess.
'At all cost, her daughter shouldn't be seen even by their allies.'
Unlike before, He now really wanted to refuse the offer of the Duchess at all cost.
But though he wanted that, he knows that refusing her task will really cost him all.
Them going undercover means that they can't even let the daughter go outside.
Just thinking about that makes Drey feel helpless. She was still a little kid after all. She would obviously want to go out.
But even if he was able to fulfill that, the security of the Kingdom which is at its highest still doesn't make his task easy at all.
If he indeed chose to go the safer way, the chances of him being discovered are high.
With the battle still leaving no official winner. Heaven can only wonder how long would the high security last.
The only even reason why they still weren't discovered is due to his connections that enabled him to dodge almost every danger.
So with all the scary things that White is telling him which could happen to them, right as they were speaking. Drey just wasn't able to help himself but be scared and felt despair about the situation he is in.

Unlike in the case with the ogres. They wouldn't be able to go back at all.
"Hmm..? You look serious. I was obviously joking!"
Then all of his fear suddenly goes into oblivion with just two sentences from White.
"What do you mean joke?"
He asked with slight anger. He almost shouted at White but was able to contain himself at the last second.
As it turns out, White was just scaring him.
What he has told him is just one of the worst-case scenarios that could happen to them.
In the first place, it seems that White didn't believe that such an event can happen.
Believing that, an even such as that could only be when two powerful groups are at war with each other.
In that case, people from both sides will have to think of everything just to be able to one-up each other.
But because of how White worded out everything. Drey really thought that White is already expecting such a thing to happen.
'He looks so serious after all!'
Drey was so convinced that even as White tried to explain why it's almost impossible to happen. He just wasn't able to believe him.
But as White explained further, Drey finally understood what White is talking about and was able to calm down.
The route that they took is a route that no one takes. Because of that, the chances of bandits attacking would be low.
Trying to wait on a place that no one takes is just a bad idea.
Even for Drey, the idea is something that he could relate to his line of work.
For him It's like, setting up a business with products that no one wants.
Only dumb people will do that as even at the least. A businessman would look for prospects first before setting a business up.
To make things short, there's gotta be at least people who will become their customers.
"Not just that. Even if there are indeed those dumb bandits that would be here. The chances of our weakness being known by those types of people would be even lower."
Unlike when two countries are at war with each other. Bandits should only be able to think of the usual strategy, which is to gang up on the caravan the old way.
And if that is the case, they are already armed enough to repel them.
The best scenario for the bandits is if they could kidnap one of their members which would be unfortunate for them.
But at the least. Taking out the caravan itself should be almost impossible.
"Our weakness such as being low on numbers, having to be in the open, cannot retreat, easier to ambush and much more weakness that is something unique to our circumstances can only be seen if our enemies are not ordinary ones."
At first, making logic of the explanation of White. Drey thought that his problem was already solved.
But apparently, the problem is not over as White still continued to speak.
Drey is already thinking that it might have been the intention of White. He was putting him in a rollercoaster of emotion that he can only wonder if White is not just messing with him.
And before White could even finish, Drey already wanted to shut him up and toss him in some river.
"If it's just bandits. The high presence of guards should already deter them from attacking. Let alone ambushing us..."
Drey didn't even care about much of his explanation but just the ones where he said that if their enemies aren't ordinary people.
Cause as they were traveling. He has heard of the news from his connections in some small towns that they have encountered on their journey that a number of unknown groups gathering in different places are seen.
It's like, they are waiting for something.
Drey, even though unsure is already thinking of such thing as their enemy that somehow was able to discover them.
For all things that can happen. Even if he isn't sure. He still has to care. So even though he doesn't want to. Drey now has no choice but to ask White further.
"White. If we are indeed attacked by those types of people you are describing. Do we stand a chance?"
With the sudden question. White was actually surprised and looked at Drey's face to see how serious he is.
"Ehh?... Ohhh!"
White makes a face that looks like he discovered something. Drey suddenly became tense again thinking that White might again know their secrets.
"You hit some big shots don't you!"
'Shit!'
"I get it! You're a businessman after all!"
Lucky for Drey, it was about something different.
"Yeah, hahaha"
"I know, I know. It happens all the time so don't worry about it. But yeah. Back to your question."
"So, do we?..."
"Don't worry about it. Even if you're enemy is noble or something. It shouldn't be something that we can't handle."
'It's not like they would expect us to head this way after all.
Even if they did, they shouldn't be able to put much effort into setting up a trap here since they still can't bring that many troops which also means that they can't raise that much movement as this is still a wildland.'
After that, a lot of conversation happened between the two before White got back with Black and Isa.
