《Building An Army In Another World With My Smartphone》Chapter 9

Currently, I am in the central command room, where Ayumi and the logistics units are working. Several screens showed the camera attached to the combat units, and every time someone wanted to stay, a picture of them would be taken along with other details.

I wanted to make a registry and give each person an identification card. Each card would open certain areas where the more trusted people are allowed more access.

I also plan to have most doors fitted with a security card swipe machine to prevent unauthorised people from entering. I consulted with Ayumi about this, and she shared the same opinion as me.

We decided on a system with four ranks that determined which areas you have access to.

Level 1 - Normal open areas

Level 2 - Special Area

Level 3 - Restricted Area.

Level 0 - Top Secret (Only Me and the Units.)

I plan to create an underground area for level 0 type stuff that no one can know about, like those Government secret underground bases.

Next was what I should create; we decided to have twenty units with the Type 99 rifle Arisaka(Sniper Rifle), twenty units with the M240 machine gun, and twenty standard units with the FAL.

I also created M1911 pistols (Colt 1911) for every unit to use, including some of the non-combatants. I also made one for me and a couple of extra to go in the armoury. Of course, I didn't know how to use it.

I headed out to a place on the far side of the base with Ayumi and built an open shooting range. The first couple of rounds all missed, but my accuracy became better as I fired more and more.

Next was Ayumi's turn; she hit every single round with headshots on the target. Well, of course, she did; she was my top assistant. I spent a couple of hours practising until I could hit at least five shots out of ten.

There was going to be a need for me to protect myself in the future.

I then went to the mansion and had a chat with the slave girls, who had all decided to stay. The conversation was very awkward because none of them was wearing clothes, and I had no idea where to look.

After that, we returned to the command centre. All of the hostages have decided what they want to do. Only three people wanted to leave. They all were men, and they reasoned that they had families waiting for them.

So we planned a time for them to be outside the forest. They were definitely going to be spreading the word about our place inside the forest. And if Gilot was telling the truth, this forest belonged to a nation called Cerenth Empire. How they perceived us could determine if there was going to be war.

We needed to gather information about the empire. Unfortunately, we had no surveillance capabilities, like satellites or drones. We would have to rely on spies. But all of the units except Ayumi have no faces.

"Ayumi, about-"

"Yes, we do need to gather information about this empire."

Woah, she just read my mind.

"Good, we're on the same page. About the units, why are you the only one with a human appearance?"

"That is so that I can communicate with the Supreme Commander better. But all of the units are capable of changing to human appearances."

"Wait, they can!?"

The next day the chinooks took off with the three people on board. They were given several packs of MRE filled with only meat and containers of water. The chinooks dropped them several miles away from the nearest town not to attract any attention, and after the hostages were out of sight, we let our spies out.

I had forty units made with espionage skills, armed with only pistols hidden inside their clothes. They appeared as normal looking males and females. Their sole objective was to spread themselves all around the country.

Unfortunately, we encountered two problems. One was the communication devices, and the video feed system's range was only around 15km; over that, it was completely silent. Instead of building radio towers, we decided to station a unit every 10km and act as a message relay system. Radio towers could be very ineffective as we would have station guards, and they could be spotted by enemies or wild monsters. But I did build one inside the base.

The second problem was the units needed to be recharged every two weeks, and if not, they would just stop working. In that case, I could just retrieve them since they are counted as deactivated.

But it would be a problem if they needed to be on long term missions. Currently, we have the workshop working on replaceable batteries that can be stored and transported or a portable recharging device. All this reminded me that my phone has not needed to be charged once since coming here.

I asked the people who have decided to settle down here for some information regarding the empire. But only a couple had any decent information. The most common fact was that the Cerenth Empire was all about expanding. It was going to be very unlikely that we would be able to negotiate with them.

Now we just had to wait. In the meantime, I looked at what each of the rescued people- or I should call them civilians now that they are part of our little community. We had a decent range of skills, with farmers and hunters being the most common.

For now, I gave the farmers each a small plot of land within the walls; since we didn't have any seeds to grow, I ordered the spy units to purchase some. Once they buy some, I can retrieve them since they would belong to me.

I plan to build a greenhouse for farming in the near future. However, we needed to expand a bit more and increase our base defence for now.

The hunters would go with the combat units into the forest in groups and hunt. Some of them have knowledge of the types of prey and the different plants inside the forest. Also, all the fur and materials are processed by people who have crafting skills. So that we could use or sell them.

There were many children within our group, so several people volunteered to look after them. Most of them were mothers themselves.

The rest of the people would help around the base: helping out in the factories or warehouse. They were all managed by the units working in those locations.

Two or three people were unhappy with the system, and with a bit of digging, it showed that they owned small businesses and had people work for them. But with their businesses destroyed, their best bet was here, so they had no choice but to work.
