《Demonify》Prologue - Discovery

“Finally!!! I finally found it!”
Both excitement and tiredness could be heard in the voice that ran through the usually quiet library room, nearly startling me to death. The loud sound caused me to jump, which in turn resulted in me falling off the bookshelf I was comfortably reading on.
In fact I had been so shocked I couldn’t even shout in surprise.
So after a few seconds of seeing naught but stars from my fall as well as overcoming the dizziness that had come from hitting my head on the floor I simply grumbled some curses no gentleman should ever utter and sorted my feathers back into place.
My master in her excitement hadn’t even noticed my predicament and was merrily continuing her rant, excitedly scribbling down on a piece of parchment placed on the table next to her.
“This is it!”, she exclaimed again, all tiredness from the long research gone from her voice.
I sighed to myself and attempted to calm my still wildly beating heart while flapping my wings steadily to fly onto the desk she was working on.
“Master”, I addressed her respectfully. I was after all one of her trusty familiars and very proud of the position. Never in my wildest dreams would I dare to disrespect my master by cursing at her for nearly shocking me to death…
“Kra, there you are!”, she smiled as she looked up from her piece of parchment, an excited glint in her red eyes. The glow in those reptilian-like eyes made me shiver despite myself. The rest of her appearance also did naught to support my knowledge of her innocence and purity of heart. Her long slightly wavy black hair dropped down past her waist, shrouding her figure in darkness. Her bangs were just long enough to hide her eyes should she not face directly in front or up. Only on the side were they parted by two black horns growing out of her temples and curving backwards, drawing nearly a full round across her pointed rigged ears that were peeking out of her hair.

Yes, you have read correctly, my friend. Horns.
For my master is of the proud Devil race. The rest of her devilish appearance was currently hidden by her clothing. Two mightly dragonlike black wings which she usually kept in their smallest form when not in use as well as a long devil’s tail that was covered by her robes. In fact her wings could reach a stage so small one could mistake them for fashion accessories as long as she did not move them.
“What seems to be the matter, master?”, I finally inquired.
“Kra, look at this! I finally found a clue to his whereabouts!”
Kra was the nickname my master had bestowed upon me, the great crow Krabitius Windigus III of the Sky Spirit Empire. It was a name I wear with pride.
Having understood the reason of my masters excitement I quickly hopped over to her side to take a glance at the passage she had pointed out with a conviction unlike of her.
And surely enough, there it was.
After years of research in this hidden library that had led to nothing but frustration we had found the hiding place of the greatest calamity the races of NeoPangea were facing at the moment. The Great Cyclops.
The location wasn’t disclosed precisely but with this much information it would prove easy enough to find.
Then my master could finally execute her vengeance upon her oldest and strongest foe… it wouldn’t be an easy fight. I don’t doubt she hasn’t been the only one growing stronger over the years.
I cast a worried glance upon her.
She noticed my gaze upon her and put me at ease with just a few words.
“Don’t worry, Kra. After all I have you guys with me now!”
Shocked I looked up at her.

“Master…!” I was touched. She would put so much trust into us… even though we were demons mortals frowned upon and cursed with all their heart. Even then our master did not hesitate to trust us. Truthfully it was something we didn’t deserve at all.
But this was exactly the reason why I and my companions would readily give our everything for this small devil.
Without fail, we will definitely protect this small light granted to us in those hours of darkness and despair.

[A/N]: First of all welcome back to the rewritten version of my previous story. I hope you'll enjoy it and stay with me until the end of our journey.
I will be aiming for at least 2000 words per chapter just for the practice. I will also try going for weekly releases, but this might not always be possible since I m a student. In these cases please bear with me.
Other than that I’m looking forward to any comments and criticism you may and hopefully will throw at me! I’m looking for holes in the story, grammatical errors and even just something that bugs you while reading.
Tell me if you’re curious or confused about something and what goes through your head while reading.
Thanks a bunch!~

On the Road to Elspar (Book 1)
The year is 1329. The Huntress' War has entered its tenth year, inflaming competing nationalisms and pitting the Confederacy of Caldrein against one of the continent's superpowers, the Tenereian Union. Desperately outnumbered, the Confederacy has relied on the prowess of its famed Caldran mercenaries, with highly-trained and experienced warbands returning from foreign conflicts to the defense of their homeland, and it is on their backs that Caldrein has successfully mounted a valiant defense for a decade. But they are losing, and day by day, with all the grace of a sledgehammer, the vast Tenereian armies take one more bit of Caldran territory, one footstep at a time. Sixteen-year-old Neianne from the village of Caelon has submitted herself to Faulkren Academy, one of the centuries-old institutions established to train the next generation of Caldrein's elite soldiers of fortune, to learn the ways of wars for three years before embarking upon the defense of her country. Her dryad family once hailed from reclusive woodland communes isolated from Caldrein's complicated mainstream society, and her upbringing leaves the shy village girl unprepared to suddenly train alongside other apprentices from backgrounds as low as the dirty slums of Caldrein's cities and as high as the halls of aristocratic power. Yet the war is eroding the norms and traditions that the Caldran people have long considered part of their national mythos, and the tensions within the confederacy that have long simmered under the surface - race, class, community, identity - are slowly but surely dividing its people, and Neianne must grow and discover who she really is, even as the war that she is steadfastly training for comes to its inexorable end... On the Road to Elspar is a fantasy quest - a work of interactive fiction wherein readers get to vote on what happens next at critical junctures - that is the first entry in a story that follows Neianne of Caelon, which first began on July 20, 2016. Originally a three-part in medias res prologue to a larger story titled On the Elsparian Road, it was eventually decided that this section - which covers Neianne's three years at Faulkren Academy - become its own independent story due to length, structural, and accessibility reasons. Despite this being a reader interactive work of fiction, due to logistical and verification concerns, voting will only be counted on its thread on the forum Sufficient Velocity, where this story originally began. As such, the content here on Royal Road serves as a story-only archive. You are, of course, entirely welcome to enjoy On the Road to Elspar as a conventional work of fiction, just as you are welcome to comment, discuss, and provide critique. But if you would like to participate in the voting, then I would be honored to welcome you on Sufficient Velocity. To facilitate accessibility and to ensure the best reading experience, this story-only version of On the Road to Elspar will be updated at a periodic pace, even though further content exists, so as to not overwhelm new readers on Royal Road. If you enjoy this story, wish to binge it, and/or want to participate in voting immediately, you may of course read all additional content via the link provided above. This paragraph will be removed once the content on Royal Road catches up with what has already been posted in its original thread. Cover artwork by DreamSyndd.
