《Briox the Magus》3. Leaving Rifthollow

Briox stepped out of the Silly Pirate and checked the moon, he'd been in there for a while but not too long. With the proper bribes the current gate guards would let him through the side door no problem. The next shift however had a true believer in Holy Hyser and couldn't be bribed. He quickly began to stride for the gates, while Tommy prepared the materials and ingredients he'd asked for he had other matters to attend to. Raiding an inquisitors convoy was suicide for most people. The fact that Tommy would even consider it already made him a braver man than most. That his men didn't turn him in for saying it was probably more of a matter of the lawlessness of Rifthollow than them being wiling to attack an Inquisitor.
Inquisitors of even the lowest level were elites in Hyser. All of them trained in resisting magical persuasion, torture, and brainwashed into being the perfect warriors for Holy Hyser. An Inqusitor didn't care if they died as long as it was for the glory of the Divine Emperor. Many of them were Magi and all of them had the best equipment and combat training the Hyser Church could provide. It was said that even the recruits were a match for twenty men. Briox barely noticed when he passed through the gate, passing a prepared pouch of silver to the guards before he headed back out into the wilderness. Inquisitors were bad news, one of the biggest dangers to him in this new Islandyer and here he was preparing to throw himself in the way of one. Briox sighed and used a quick search spell after he was out of sight of the town, the familiar symbols forming in his mind and then manifesting around him, spreading outwards in a circle of light. After a moment he was sure that there was nothing within the nearby area.

Briox cassually raised his hand and traced a few symbols in the air. Each one acting as a focus drawing power from the surrounding and then channeling it into the spell he formed within his mind. In a moment his body felt light, energy poured into him and he took a moment to enjoy the rush of mana flooding him. Before it built too far and went out of control he released it, magic formed glowing lights and shifting patterns. Reality warped and bent to his will, shaping to the instructions Briox enforced. Then it all settled down, the feeling of power vanishing instantly as reality settled into a new form. This one with a large creature standing before Briox, it was a quadraped, built with incredible muscles, as if someone had crossed a cat with a bear and left it furless with grey stonelike skin.
Briox smiled and petted the creatures head as it purred for him. It was a Greycat, a creature with incredible endurance, strength and speed. Its ability to climb and manuever making it an incredible mount in the rugged terrain around Rifthollow. Normally Briox wouldn't use one to get to town for the same reasons he didn't place a teleport marker near it. Doing so would increase his risk of discovery but if he was going to fight an Inquisitor he would definetly be discovered, that or die. Besides he wasn't heading into town but leaving it.
In a single fluid action he mounted his Greycat and they charged into the mountains. Tommy had said the Inqusitor was in town for a few days gathering supplies, and would remain in the region for no more than a week or two. Every day counted and they were fortunate that he wanted to show off for his superiors and bring those he captured alive to a Inqusitor Interrogator. Otherwise Tommy would likely already be an only child. Briox needed to reach his sanctuary, even without the supplies from Tommy yet he would need to prepare what he could.

The Last Marshal
Weird West Fantasy Noir Once the Republic Marshals brought order to the chaotic lands along the Frontier, facing dangers both human and supernatural with ancient wisdom and a six-gun —but that was a long time ago. Destroyed by conspiracy and betrayal, all that remains of that secretive order is one nameless man on a trek though the West seeking revenge on the woman he blames for the Marshals' fall and his disgrace. When a visitor from our world joins him on his journey, they together must confront the horrors of a strange land, the mysteries of the past and the real meaning of their quest for justice. The world of Tellus is what 19th Century Earth would have looked like if the stories of Poe, Ambrose Bierce, Lovecraft and William Hope Hodgeson were real. History in this world moves slower. The old faiths persist and civilization never conquered the dark corners of the map, at least not without being inextricably changed. Technology and culture takes a little longer to evolve in this land, as people here tend to spend more time pursuing their elaborate revenge plots or trying to avoid being the next sacrifice to the Outer Gods rather than advancing science or statecraft. Imagine Cormac McCarthy by way of Edgar Rice Burroughs, though a little less testosterone-drenched than that description would imply. Three caveats: First, there are deep mysteries here, including how such a world came to be and who controls it. Second, this world is not wholly unconnected from our own. There is a historical point of divergence, but in the distant past. To paraphrase Twain: history in this world is not a repeat of our own, but it does often rhyme. And finally, this is not a setting that lends itself to happy endings.
