《The life of a Soldier》Chapter 12: Rescue

The woman stared at Dorian, Signs of resentment visible in her eyes. Although tortured this women had not yet been broken. Dorian didn't hesitate for a second. As enraged as he already was he stepped forward with the rage burning in his eyes. The battered woman braced herself for more of the torture she had already been shown. He could see the muscles on her damaged and malnourished body attempting to brace itself for whatever pain she expected to come.
The pain she was expecting however would never come. Instead the loud clang of breaking metal could be heard as Dorian smashed open the heavy metal cuffs holding her arms and legs in place. With the amount of heat magic that Dorian could use breaking open the metal cuffs became a great deal easier.
The woman not expecting to be freed from her shackles was caught by surprise and fell forward. As battered as her body was there was not much expectation for the woman to be able to catch herself before hitting the ground. There really was no doubt that she would not have the physical strength to move by herself. She wouldn't hit the ground however because Dorian had been ready for her to fall and moved to catch her as gently as he could.
The woman just stared into Dorians eyes for a moment, many unexplained emotions flashing through her eyes before her eyelids drifted shut and she fell into a long needed sleep. Dorian could feel the magic in the shackles and in the cell itself. Magic purposefully constructed to keep prisoners from their sleep. Yet another torture method that would damage the psychological senses of any human being.
The cruel methods of torture and both mental and physical abuse only stacked ontop of the ire Dorian already felt for the kidnappers of Ístril. He vowed to himself then and there that whatever group was responsible for this kind of treatment to human beings he would bring down. His cleanse would be bloody and fast if he had any say in it. That would have to wait however for now there were more pressing matters to attend to.
"The magic used in this cell and on these shackles is beyond any normal form of cruelty." The pries said with a pensive expression. "The people who created and used these symbols loved bringing pain to other living beings. It makes me sick to my soul to even see these ugly runes."
The air around the priest started bristling with energy as his staff started to emit more of the white light. Dorian shielded the child and the woman in his arms from the light and stepped back out of the cell. The priest looked at the marks and passed is staff over the runes, searing them from existence. The priest seemed so insulted by these very marks that it seemed he could not even stand their very existence.
Dorian turned his back on the working priest and looked at the rest of the group. "Lets get these poor people out of here." Vor moved to the nearest cell with uncontrolled emotions in his eyes and placed his hands around the bars of the cell door. In this particular cell there was a young beastmen family, they looked to be of lion heritage. The family looked at the huge treeman the fear apparent in their eyes. Vor didn't bother making any consoling words, at the moment he was nowhere near the temperament to console the poor family. With a surge of strength and a ripple of muscles he ripped the door of its hinges and slung it to a corner of the dungeon.

With a loud exhale he looked at the family and then simply moved to the next cell repeating the move and ripping of another cell door. The family looked at Dorian with fear in their eyes. Then they noticed the tattered child clinging to his legs and the woman in his arms. Confusion coloured their faces. Dorian stepped forward to the family and smiled as calmly and reasurringly as he could.
"Do not worry, we are here to get you out of this place, we will not harm you any further."
The family looked at him with disbelief for a few seconds before one of the children walked forward out of grasp of his parents. His father made a quick grasp for the child to drag him back. The child was gone to quickly however, the young boy ran to Dorian and stood in front of him. His father stood behind the boy and seemed ready to move should Dorian dare to lay a harming hand on his son.
"Can we really go?" The boy said with hope in his voice, dirty face staring up to him with the glimmer in his eyes.
"Yea" Was all Dorian said looking at the kid. The family still hesitated for a moment and then the boy started crying in relief. The tension snapped as his family started shedding tears aswell. Dorian looked at the family and did his best to keep his emotions from his face. Wat this needed now was not a look of pity but a reassured individual to lead them out of this hell they had been put in.
The priest seemed to be done with his removal of the marks, he walked towards the family that had just been freed from their cells and moved to heal their wounds. At first the family backed of from the unknown person, instincts kicking in to stay away from anyone they did not know. Not strange after the trauma they had been through.
"Do not fret, i merely wish to heal your injuries." The priest said calmly looking at the family with a saint like smile. Putting the family at ease in a single smile. A priest was much more effective at offering comfort than a warrior, Dorian thought to himself.
As the priest moved to heal all the people in the dungeon Vor had finally finished ripping the cell doors of their hinges. The people around the cells started coming out looking at the other captives with a now growing sense of hope in their eyes. Then they saw the priest going around healing the injuries of other captives. Before long people started realising that they would really be free from the hand of the thugs. Tears of joy started to stream down the battered, dirt-stained faces. Some people started to thank Dorian and his group but before it could get out of hand Dorian spoke up.
"Do not give us your thanks yet, we have to make sure you people get out of here and back to you homes in one piece. We will do our best to keep you safe but lets stay on our toes none the less!" His words made the captives a bit more tense as they started to focus on making it out of here.
"We should take them to my inn. These people have well deserved a proper meal and a good nights rest after all they have been through. My inn has more than enough space to host this group of people." The inkeeper said to Dorian stepping forward next to him.

"That would help out a lot, my thanks." Dorian said to the Innkeeper.
"Do not thank me boy, these people are as much my responsibility as yours. There is no need for you to shoulder those burdens alone."
Dorian looked at the innkeeper in surprise. To be honest he hadn't even noticed that he felt like he should take responsibility for these people. He had just done the things he done mostly out of instinct. Having a trustworthy man telling him he would help out however. Lifted a weight from his shoulders he hadn't even noticed was there before.
Dorian started organizing the people to get them out of the underground maze of sewers. Soon enough the lot of them were moving back through the hallway untill they reached the room where Dorian and his party had pretty much slaughtered the thugs. Seeing the corpses of their tormenters finally let the people realise they were truly free. The now ex-prisoners looked at the corpses of the thugs around them. One woman spotted a larger than average thug on the corpse and started to get tears in here eyes. With the wetness falling down her cheeks she started to kick the corpse of the thug on the ground. Letting out sobs of pain and joy at the same time.
The other ex-prisoners soon followed suit and started venting their long pent-up anger at the corpses of the thugs sprawled around the room. Dorian thought it would be best to leave the people who needed to vent to their venting. At the very least they had deserved to kick the bodies of their tormenters a bit. The girl clutching Dorians pants looked up at him but did not move to join the other people in their venting. Instead she gave him a smile that sent warmth running through Dorians body. So much of his emotions were soothed with the honest and happy smile of the young girl.
It was terrible what had happened to Arin, and that Ístril had been taken. But he would be lieng if he said that helping these people was not a balm to his heart. After the people were done venting their anger Dorian led them through the sewer passages untill they finally reached the hatch that led up to the black market store they had entered through.
Opening the latch and stepping into the store Dorian took a deep breath of fresh air before looking around again. The shopkeeper was still in his store and when he looked at the girl at Dorians feet and the one he was carrying in his arms the mans face turned a pasty white. Dorian stared at the man in a passionate rage but did not act on it. He had a small child attached to him after all. Dorian walked out through the door. Stepping out into the fresh air outside he rolled his shoulders and looked around the blessedly empty street.
Dorian looked back at the group and saw Gladiel tenderly helping an older man out of the sewerways. Gladiel met Dorians gaze, Dorian motioned with his head for Gladiel to join him. Gladiel joined him and looked at him questiongly.
"What is it?"
"That shopkeeper, take care of him." Dorian said looking at Gladiel.
Gladiel looked at him and said. "If i were to be honest it would be my genuine pleasure." For once there was no jovial smile in the playboys face. The grim face he was showing now would scare the breath out of any average person. Dorian on the other hand wasn't afraid of Gladiel in the least. He knew the young man was a bit, odd, but he had a surprisingly strong sense of justice. Blaitz and Vor might have had trouble killing an unharmed shopkeeper. But both Dorian and Gladiel had no such reserves, they knew that this whole operation would not have been possible without a corrupt merchant like that shopkeeper in the midst of it.
Looking back at the rest of the group Dorian led them to The Waddling Boar.
Once they reached the door the innkeeper stepped forward and unlocked it for them. Mori and Tolu heard the door unlock and rushed down the stairs worried looks on their faces. The girls saw the crowd behind the inkeeper and halted for a moment shocked. Having a bunch of tattered and dirty people arrive at your inn past midnight was not something most people were used to.
"Dont dawdle girls! We have a lot of food to prepare!" The innkeeper said walking to the kitchen grabbing an apron and throwing it on. "You people take a seat anywhere, it's about time you got some decent food." The crowd behind him entered the inn and started chattering amongst each other excitedly. They all took their seats at the benches and tables spread around the Boar's living room.
Dorian headed upstairs to put the woman in his arms in his bed. He made sure to gently tuck her in beneath the sheets, he looked at her and clicked his tongue in annoyance. Is this wat a city is like? He wondered, how could the guards that work to protect these people allow this to happen. The whole concept that this could be done to people for any reason what so ever was completely lost on Dorian. He would never understand the need to treat innocent civilians like this. The abuse and torture had no use, it served no real purpose and was only done for the enjoyment of deranged people.
The child tugged at Dorians leg looking up at him worried. Dorian smiled at the girl, here she was having been abused and tormented who knew in wat kind of manner, her mother had been taken from her by the scum of mankind and she was still worried about him rather than herself. There was beauty to be found in man kind, the young child was proof of it. Patting her head Dorian smiled reassuringly at her and headed back to the inn's living room. He joined the rest of his group at their own table, the little girl tried climbing on the bench but couldn't quite reach. Dorian smiled softly and picked the girl up and placed her on the bench next to her.
The girl was so small she could still not look over the edge of the table and see the people sitting on the other side. Dorian picked her up and put her on his lap. The girl then got a proper view around the table and sent the group a gloriously happy beaming smile that eased the hearts of those gathered here. The mood had been grim since they left the sewers. The goal for which they had gone after all had not been accomplished. They had not found Ístril, not even a trace of her was found in the underground sewers.
Even a magic search by the priest and young woman had amounted to nothing. The smile of the young girl however put their hearts a bit at ease. Even if they had not accomplished their goal they had still done a great deed here. Especially for the people who had been imprisoned.
The innkeeper started to pass out food to the people they had rescued as they were digging in to their meals with a passion there was a knock on the inndoor.
"OPEN UP!" someone yelled outside. "This is the city guard!"

Whether there is any truth to this ancient tale is unknown, but it is a certainty that in each generation perhaps a handful of those children will, in fact, obtain a legendary class.
