《The life of a Soldier》Chapter 10: Moving through the sewers

Dorian moved forward slowly and ever so steadily. Making sure that he made no sounds that could give him away to the people around the bend. The magic of the knife and whatever the young woman had cast on him made him nothing more than a shadow in the dark.
In other words he was as good as invisible, so if he was carefull not to make a sound then the guards up ahead would have no idea wat hit them. Dorian moved around the corner looking at the guards ahead. They had a couple of braziers mounted on the wall, but they had not lit the fires. The only fire that was lit was a small campfire in the middle. The fire itself was blue and for some reason there was no sign of smoke coming from the flames.
Magic fire was indeed the better option in underground complexions. The gasses fire usually emitted would be toxic if they grew to unmanageable levels. The guards were all standing around the fire cooking some kind of meat above it. Terrible guards to be honest they wouldn't see anyone coming up behind them in this dark. He could stand a meter behind one of them and they would never notice.
Grimacing in the distaste of the poor professionalism these thugs showed Dorian moved slowly forward. After a while he decided to speed up a bit. They were talking so loudly they wouldn't hear him coming even if he ran. Soon enough he was right behind the guards. No more than a couple of meters away. He could hear the breathing of the guard now.
Could smell the food cooking over the fire, hear the bubbling of the fat. Dorian calmed his breathing and tried to calm his heartbeat. To be honest he was rather excited, this would be the first time he would kill a man. He thought that he might hesitate, or have doubts about doing it when the opportunity arrived. He had heard that people never forgot their first kill, that the shock of taking someone elses life would haunt them deeply. That people would hesitate to the last minute before doing wat needed to be done.

People are so fragile. Dorian thought to himself as he stepped forward grabbing the first man around the mouth and quickly slitting his throat. The other guards stared at Dorian who had just slit the throat of their friend. Shocked at the sudden appearance they did not even react. Not that Dorian gave them any chance to. After slitting the first guys throat he quickly stepped forward stabbing between the ribs of another one piercing his heart cleanly. He used the forward momentum to smoothly transit into a kick landing the back of his heel in the throat of the last guard.
The guard grabbed at his throat trying his hardest to breath. But he could not his throat had been crushed. The man stared at Dorian with panicked eyes, glistening irises pleading him wordlessly for mercy. Dorian didn't even hesitate, seeing the state they had left Arin in made him swiftly end the man's life. Wiping his blade clean on one of the guards tunics he sheathed his blade and continued further in the sewers. Not feeling the least bit distraught at the lives he had just been taken. The only thing he did feel was a sense of purpose.
He moved forward following the flickering lights and the sound of other thugs that were in the sewer. It was quite easy to guess the way the group that had taken Ístril would take and he just followed his instincts and made his way through the thugs in his path.
The other so-called guards that inhabited the sewer were no more of a challenge than the first 3, none of them did their jobs properly. None of them lived for more than a second after meeting Dorians blade. Leaving corpses in his wake he made his way through the sewer. Slowly but surely the density of the guards suggested that they were finally getting close to their base of operations.
The rest of the group just followed Dorian at a distance. Letting him take care of things untill there were too many to take out quietly.
After stepping past the first campfire the rest of the group looked at Dorians handiwork. “Remind me to never mess with your friend.” The priest said looking at the 3 dead guards on the floor. “Their life force disappeared so quickly i doubt they even realised what had happened.”

“Yes he does do rather quick clean work does he not.” The young woman stated. Looking at the inflicted wounds slightly impressed. “One move for one enemy, quite the scary efficiency, although i suppose this one counts as two moves.” She said glancing at the one that had his throat crushed.
The rest just followed the path of dead bodies that Dorian was leaving them, the priest seeming a bit disconcerted with the amount of people loosing their lives. The rest of the group however did not seem bothered in the least. Blaitz and Gladiel only grimaced in satisfaction every time they saw a new grouping of bodies. Vor didn't pay the least bit of attention to the dead and just made his way further along the sewers.
At long last Dorian reached a door that was for once properly guarded. There were lit braziers above the guards watching the door and they had their backs turned to it. This way they could see anyone approaching the door before they could do anything. These guards were visibly better armed and armored than the ones he had run into before.
They were a great deal more professional than the untrained thugs he had run into before. Dorian made his way back to the rest of the group to let them know that this was as far as stealth would take them. None of them had brought any long-range weapons and the only weapons being used were close ranged. It seemed it was time for them to make an entrance.
“There seem to finally be a few proper guards up ahead.” Dorian said looking at the rest of the group.
Gladiel smiled at him. “Finally we get to do something, i was getting rather bored.”
“How many?” Vor asked
“6 of them.” Dorian answered. “Which means there is one for each of us. I suggest we swiftly kill these and then burst through the door. There will probably be a larger group of them ahead but this way we will have the element of surprise.”
“I agree with your plan, now lets stop standing around and get this over with.” The Innkeeper said.
The rest of the group nodded and they took their places just around the bend. Dorian told them that each would take one and after assigning their victims they burst out of cover and rushed the 6 Guards. The guards blinked in surprise but quickly reacted, unsheathing weapons and getting into stance. Dorian smoothly dodged the spear of his opponent and buried his blade between the ribs of the guard before he even knew wat hit him.
The rest of the group had no difficulty with their opponents aswell, Blaitz smoothly dodged passed his opponents sword and buried his knife in the guards gut. immediately removing the blade again before expertly applying it to the opponents jugular.
Dorian didn't even see how Gladiels opponent died, Gladiel was already removing a dagger from his opponent's head. Vor just smashed his opponent with one of his huge firsts, crushing his skull with a single swing. As for wat the guard had done, he swung his blade at Vor but the blade barely managed to penetrate an inch into the Entmans skin.
The priest used the head of his quarterstaff in a swift swing and broke the opponents footing before twirling to use the sharp end of the bladestaff like weapon and burying it in his opponents hand. The innkeeper had brought a huge axe with him and sliced his opponent cleanly into. The young womans opponent was the one that had died as first. Some black shadow had leapt from the young womans hand and had stuffed itself down the throat of her victim.
It all took about 2 second before all the guards were dead. They quickly busted through the door. Only to find themselves in what seemed to be the enemies cantina. There were at least 3 dozen thugs eating their food as they looked up when Dorian and his group burst in.
Muahhaha, next chapter will be uploaded tonight. This part looked better to me in 2 shorter chapted than in 1 long one.
