《El Dorado》Chapter Twenty-Seven

I grieved for nearly an hour before I finally pulled myself together and questioned Theia again.
“Are you sure?”
Theia didn’t respond. She didn’t have to respond. She wouldn’t have mentioned it had she felt different. “Wait, Theia. Why didn’t the explosion affect both worlds?”
“What makes you think it didn’t? This world could very well be destroyed in say—”
“Ten thousand year.”
“Can we save it?”
“This world?”
“Yeah. You might have already.”
“What?”
“Master, time is an illusion, but you removed a small percentage of matter from this world. I haven’t calculated the mass difference, but I think that it might speed the orbit up enough to miss the explosion by a few thousand kilometers.”
It took me a few minutes to understand what she was implying. But then it dawned on me. The energy was released in ten thousand years from today, but it’s possible this worlds position could change due to the weight difference. Is there a way for us to know?
“Sure. We could travel to the future and find out.”
“WHAT?! And risk destroying another planet?”
“No.” She returned to my couch and sat next to me putting her arm around my shoulders. It felt great. “We build a ship and find out.” She slowed her next words, “IN SPACE.”
“Which is where I should have conducted my experiment—”
“Master, you can’t blame yourself for not knowing what would happen. What you did by accident should have been impossible.”
“But, I may have killed my family…everyone.”
“We’ll find out.”
“How?”
“I’ve studied the atomic energy from some of the items you brought with us, and I think I can get us back to your timeline. But, Caden. You can’t exist in two places at the same time. We can’t go back and warn yourself.”

“H.G. Wells effect?”
“You can’t change the events which helped you discover time travel. The universe would never allow it. We would arrive in a different parallel universe rather than the one we intend.”
“What can happen has already happened.”
“I’m sorry.”
“So, if we travel in time and my world is gone, what do I do?”
“You do, whatever you want. We can return here and see what happens. We could time travel within this timeline as long as we don’t go to a time before our arrival. If you do, it’ll reset to a different universe.”
“In theory.”
Theia shrugged.
“Theia, how do you know we’ll be able to get back?”
“The atomic signature. Um. Oh. You know how rocks show how the magnetic poles have changed on earth over the years.”
“Geomagnetic reversal. Yes, I went to Mines. Remember?”
Theia smiled, and I realized she was teasing me.
“I detected a quantum resonance pattern for spacetime. Honestly, without you traveling in time the first time I doubt anyone would have discovered the key to not only time travel but between the parallel universes as well.”
“We can see other parallel worlds?”
“Um. No. At least I don’t think so. I don’t know the resonance of the other universes. I could try guessing, but I don’t know if that’s a good idea. I doubt it’s as easy as adding a digit at the end of a variable. It’d be like trying to unlock a combination with an infinite number of possibilities.”
“Isn’t that exactly what it is?”
“Okay, smarty pants. Bad example. I’ll have to research it, but you need to prioritize.”
“Right. Returning home is first.”
“No. Helping Klapdud is first. Tomorrow, right?”

“We need to get back home.”
“You home isn’t going anywhere. What’s done is still in the future, and we can go anytime you want. Helping the orcs and other humanoids won’t change where your home is. But, I’d kind of hoped your home is here.” Theia lowered her voice to barely a whisper, “with me.”
“Right. Um. Let’s jump into Virtual, and you can show me your research. Don’t look at me that way. I promised to see them tomorrow and I will. I also promised to take you with me. Who else is going to fly the spacecraft?”
Theia smiled at me and disappeared. I frowned and took a deep breath and tried to calm my nerves. I hope I didn’t kill my world. I made my way to the Zero-G and settled into it, taking calming breaths.
“Virtual.”

8 353The Queen's Guard
Friedrich Schreiner is a proud gefreiter of the Queen's Guard, 2nd Company: the finest fighting infantry on the continent (barring the Temple Guard; but please don't bring that up). Service is honourable but, with the Empire on a peacetime footing, terribly boring. Affairs take a dramatic turn for the worse when a mysterious invader uses a forgotten and taboo magical means to breach the capital, plunging the nation into chaos and endangering the royal family. With events spiraling out of control, Friedrich is entrusted with a critical mission. Will hot lead, cold steel, and his determination be enough to see him through? The Queen's Guard is what I'm calling a black powder fantasy story: it's set in a loose equivalent of the early 18th century (plus or minus a few pieces I decided I wanted or didn't want). Magic exists, but not in a spell-slinging sort of way: it's Earth-shaking undertakings or minor enchantments forged in by master craftsmen, the grand working of a secretive cabal or a slight nudge to the course of a blow. I, the eternal optimist, have a full trilogy in mind. The first book is The Prince's Arquebusier, hence the cover and the title disagreeing! This is my shot at 2021's NaNoWriMo and RR Writathon! I've hitherto been terrible at writing long-form fiction, so this is an effort to break out of that by having some accountability in being supposed to post chapters regularly. Here's hoping it works! I have an outline, but not too much detail. I'll do my best to avoid continuity errors, doing anything glaringly stupid, or otherwise fluffing my lines, but I can't make any promises on that. Please do let me know any feedback! Always happy to improve. [participant in the Nov 2021 Royal Road Writathon challenge]

8 139After Days Chronicles: A Cabin By A Lake And The Things Beyond.
They had come to this place in a mysterious way. A tempest in time whisked her to him then him and her to here, a cabin by a lake, on the top of a mountain, in a valley that no map remembered. Earth, after the Breaking, is a middle ages, modern day, post apocalyptic cluster-fuck. All living things have been altered, in one way or another. The human race is not exempt. Although most of its changes are physical, not mental. Nor moral, for that matter. This is just one of the many stories of the time known as The After Days. 'So, you control the essence?' "No. I give the thing that is, hmm... the essence inside, the bility, hmmph, the a-bilty to move and shape. I tell what I need and they do, or do not if they not liking it." 'Okay let's see if I get this straight then, you touched the rope and gave its essence the ability to move like a snake, then you asked it to do what it did and it...?' "NO! I speak with mind to the hemp and vine, gave its essence the ability. Yes. Ask it to help me. It say sorry for the hurt. Not you I say, not you, you not hurt me. He make you to hurt! He hurt. You no hurt. Help me, free me. Please. Get me keys. It touched the blood on me. I felt it, sad. I felt it anger. I not ask it to. It kill Mekel, I not ask, but I knew, it, was... umm... chance... poss-a-bility. Nature knows. Nature does. I not force nature, I only ask for help."
8 158Tale about fire
This tale starts like many others, with a slave boy that escaped and now seeks the power to never suffer in the hands of another again, with an unbalanced and cruel world where the strong rule and the weak serve, filled with natural dangers and opportunities to the ones that call themselves practitioners, the ones who seek the power of the Four. It follows as the disgusted by the world boy, resolved to change it by fire and destruction if needed find his way into the practitioners’ world in a search for true strength. Little the boy knew that his fate, or chains if you would, bounded him to so much more than just that. - I apologize in advance for any grammatical mistakes, part of why I’m writing this tale is to get better in the language. It’s also my first story so constructive criticism is appreciated.
