《Immutable》Lay your Weary Head to Rest

June watched the ensuing battle from above, grunting as she held up the last of the bombs. The enemy bombers had stopped their attack runs on the city now that their own soldiers were near the city gates.
"Let it go!" Nathan yelled over the wind. June released her power and watched as the bombs exploded above the dome, only a small amount of force crashing into them. Alex's cat jumped in front for the final time and used its shield to keep them all safe.
With no more threats from above June could finally focus on the battle below. What she saw wasn't good. The enemy army had pushed up to the North gate of Three Cities and was currently charging into the broken line of militia.
"We need to get down there," She said.
"Let's go Jim-Jam! Rocket!" Alex called. The group jumped on the two cats and held tight as they hopped down the dome.
They wouldn't make it in time. June could see that. The enemy would crash into the militia and she was too far away to use her power. She watched the red light engulf the charging soldiers, an ominous light of death. She forced herself to watch, turning away would do no one any good. She needed to be ready to counterattack, find the most effective area for it.
And then the light broke. No, it was more like it was never there. The soldiers were once again a normal formation charging forward into the irregular militia. Without their light, the soldiers were no longer a unit. The fight was now a brawl, all discipline thrown away. June caught a glimpse of Caleb before they landed, in front of the whole thing and surrounded by soldiers.
"The son of a bitch broke their line." She heard Alex mutter.

"We need to get in there, push them back!" June cried.
Nodding, Alex jumped off Rocket and onto Jim-Jam. "Catapult!" She cried as her feline companion jumped to her hand. The cat shot out, carving a line through the enemy soldiers. Jim-Jam followed in Rocket's wake.
Soon, June and the others had reached Caleb. He was standing in a tattered shirt and pants, utterly unharmed and taunting the soldiers trying to kill him.
"C'mon! My mother hits harder than that!" June heard him yell.
Focusing, June activated her power on a line of soldiers. All of them stopped, looking as if they were relaxing at a sauna and not in a pitched battle. Jim-Jam swiped at the line and sent them flying. None of the soldiers bothered to control their fall, they could always do it in a bit.
June released her power at the last second, too late for the soldiers to recover. Limbs bent at wrong angles and only the protection covering the army saved them from broken bones. "Caleb we need to get rid of the rest of the tanks!" She called.
"Yeah alright!" He answered. He jogged over the Jim-Jam, who grabbed him with his mouth and swung him up onto his back. Nathan and June caught him so he wouldn't fall.
"Go!" Alex commanded. The cat leaped over the line towards one of the tanks. Unable to fire into the militia now that their own soldiers joined, the armor had turned to fire at the dome. Half-cylinders of light would shoot periodically in the dome only to be blocked by the barrier powers from those in Three Cities.
There were only four left, but each one was staggering fire so the barrier took constant hits. Reaching the first one, June threw her power out at the cannon on top. Alex whispered to Butterwhiskers and the cat wisped off into the machine. Nathan and Caleb kept the soldiers around the tank at bay while the cat went to work. Once it popped out June released her power.

The cannon fired, but in a stroke of bad luck, the containment mechanism inside the tank broke and released the disintegrating beam inside. Light burst out of the tank, but June and rest were already on Jim-Jam charging to the next. Soldiers called out, trying to block their way. June worked with Nathan to keep their path clear and they reached the second tank with ease.
They performed the same tactic on the second, and then the third tank. By this time June was feeling the effects of straining her power. She felt like she ran a marathon while competing in a taxing quiz show. She looked over and saw Nathan straining as well. "Nathan and I can't clear a path and stop the tank, we're running out of energy." She informed.
"Okay, give us a path and I'll take care of it," Alex said. Nodding, June focused on keeping the area clear as they reached the final tank. It hadn't fired since the second tank had been destroyed. Now she saw why. The tank was charging up its next attack, the light almost blinding her as they moved forward.
June watched Alex pull Chonkers and Sir Purrsalot out of her bag. Alex whispered, "Catalyst." On Sir Purrsalot and made to throw Chonkers. "Catapult!" She yelled and the nanocat shot off. For a second June thought they had made it, the cat impacted through the side of the vehicle. The tank shook as the heavyweight cat punched through metal and electronics. But then the tank fired and light like the sun fired towards the dome.
"No!" June yelled.
She strained again, putting all her will into stopping the shot. She didn't know how much more the barriers could take. Her vision tunneled, all focus on stopping the beam. Sound disappeared but she heard a distant cry from Nathan. "Caleb, get in front of it!"
She stopped feeling her limbs and the edges of her vision blackened. She strained harder, the darkness seeping closer. The beam had slowed, but it was light. Light wasn't known to be lazy. She pushed harder, every inch of her body forcing the beam to slow. At some point, she had fallen to her knees, but she still pushed. The beam crawled, then stuttered forward, and then finally stopped completely. She breathed in relief. And then the darkness took her.

Shadowrun: Blake Island School of Magic
It's a high tech, low life. It's the Seattle Metroplex in 2074. It rises like a steel and concrete cancer out of the earth. Poverty is rampant, corruption is everywhere, crime is out of control, corporations basically control everything, the old United States is fractured, magic has come back and now it turns out that humanity has been joined by elves, dwarves, orks and trolls. The old world ended but the rent is still due. Life goes on. You'd be surprised what people can adapt to, especially if they don't have a choice. One of the places where life goes on is just west of Seattle. Surrounded by the waters of the Puget Sound is an island. On that island is the Blake Island School of Magic. A decade ago it was known for producing some of the most talented awakened in the world. That reputation was hijacked by the wealthy corporate elite who now park their teenage children there. And since it's a boarding school, their parents mostly forget about them. Three young people, who are certainly not wealthy or elite, are chosen this year to attend this school of magic in hopes of revitalizing their reputation for talent. One from the ash drifts of the Puyallup Barrens, one from the most densely populated slum hive in the world and one from prison. This is their story. -- This story is set in the Shadowrun universe. If you're not familiar with Shadowrun, it mostly tells the stories of deniable mercenaries called shadowrunners in a cyberpunk dystopia. Instead of telling another story solely about shadowrunners, this story will tell the tale of young people navigating a world that is indifferent to them at best and actively hostile at worst. Shadowrunners will be in the story and we'll see them operate, but they won't be its main focus. This story originally began in 2017 as a passion project and continues to this day on the Somethingawful.com forums. The unedited version is over a million words strong. There are currently seven books in this series and I am currently in the process of editing them. If you read this story then you won't lack for content. -- The Topps Company, Inc. has sole ownership of the names, logo, artwork, marks, photographs, sounds, audio, video and/or any proprietary material used in connection with the game Shadowrun.
