《Immutable》Introduction - Nathan

Nathan vividly remembered the day the world ended. He remembered how the wind blew at his face. He remembered the smell of the dirt and how the wind carried it to him. He was walking outside when it all happened.

He didn't know the world ended at the time. "Ay yo wattup my guy. Listen I don't know if ya heard but your world's joined the Allworld and I want to give you a blessing."

Nathan paused. The voice talking to him was smooth, like butter. Yet Nathan got the feeling that the speaker was rushing things. "What?"

"I'm a god, the god of impulses. I'm going to give you a blessing." The voice said.

"I don't think I understand," Nathan said again.

He heard a sigh. "All you have to do is say yes."

At that point, Nathan felt an urge to say yes and see what this whole thing was about. What would this so-called god do? Before he could think about it, the words came out of his mouth. "Yes?"

"Alright! You won't regret this my dude!" the voice exclaimed.

At that point, Nathan felt the world open up. Every twitch of his body was noticeable and every nerve pulsed. Nathan knew his body but this was a whole different feeling. It was like he was submerged in water and only now did he come up for air. "What is this?" He said.

"Your blessing!" The voice explained. "As the god of impulses my blessing gives you the ability to control those impulses. Right now you can only affect your body and things you touch. But grow my power and you'll gain more in return! Super cool yeah?"

"Why me?" Nathan said. "If you hadn't noticed, I'm a bit handicapped." He gestured to the cane he used to get around.

"Call it an impulse." The god said.

"So it was on a whim?" Nathan said.

"Do I look like the god of whims?" He replied. "I said impulse and I meant impulse. A sudden call to action. An urge to incite something."

An urge? "Wait a minute! You made me want to say yes!" Nathan complained.

"What are you upset about? It's not like you got a bad deal. Plus you'll be able to survive now." The god said.

"Survive?" Nathan had no clue what this god meant. He got by just fine without this before. Of course, he'd never met a god before either.

As if to answer his question, a cackle reached his ears. It was high and screeching, and it sent shivers down Nathan's spine. This wasn't a normal sound. He had heard dogs, birds, even the occasional cat on his walks outside. This wasn't anywhere close to that.

"Duck." He heard the god say.

It was like his body moved before he could think. Nathan fell to the ground. A whooshing sound passed over his head, like when someone swings a bat through the air. The screeching sounded again, over to the left. Nathan scrambled to his feet and sprinted as fast as he could away from whatever was attacking him.

Nathan ran until he no longer heard screeching. He collapsed to the ground, lungs heaving. What was going on? Gods appearing to grant blessings, something attacking him. What was next, would the planet start talking to him?

"Wow, you can really run." Nathan heard the god say as he caught his breath. "I think those are called Agropelters, it shouldn't chase you but be careful of trees from now on. They live up in them."

"Why is this happening?" Nathan gasped out.

"No clue buddy. I remember the day when my universe joined this whole thing. All sorts of crazy monsters appeared. A lot of my followers were taken by other gods too. Not like I could discourage them either since they joined on impulse." The god rambled.

"Can you just stick to right now?" Nathan pleaded.

"Oh, well this is happening now because the Allworld needed more materials and your universe was the closest. Now you and others gotta relearn everything. But don't worry, I'm here to help! By the way, I'm Pellere." The god said.

"I don't understand," Nathan repeated. His mind couldn't grasp the situation. Just yesterday he was worrying about what cane to buy, and if maybe he should be getting a dog. Now he had to deal with this?

"Look, just focus on surviving for now," Pellere said. "Things are going to be pretty bad for a while."

Nathan took a breath. The god was right. It wouldn't do any good to shut down. He needed to get back home. He stopped to listen, trying to hear where he was.

The grass rustled and Nathan heard animals. But there was also the faintest sound of water running. He was near the park stream then. He could walk over to the bridge and then find his way back.

With a new purpose, Nathan stood and placed his cane in front. He made his way to the stream, making sure to listen for any dangers. Through a stroke of luck, Nathan was able to make it all the way to the bridge without anything attacking him. But that was where his luck ended.

"Heads up, somethings on the bridge," Pellere said.

Nathan heard it too. Something was grinding metal on the stone walls. "What is it?" He asked.

"Dunno. It's green though. Has a small bow. The face is a bit squashed too."

It sounded like a goblin. Nathan had listened to them one night during a wiki binge. He wondered if it would be like the weak mob character in most stories or the greedy magical creatures in legend. Either way, he had to get past the bridge to get home.

Steeling himself, Nathan prepared to run. He wasn't a fighter, and knew nothing about it. It would be better to dash as fast as possible and hope the goblin didn't chase. He measured the road, taking note of where he was, then stowed his cane and took off before he could overthink.

The goblin heard Nathan's heavy footfalls and whirled bow at the ready. But Nathan was faster than the goblin expected and was already too close. The goblin dropped the bow in panic and created a small fireball, only to be surprised again as Nathan barreled past. Gibbering, the monster reacted by reaching out a hand to grab at Nathan's leg. The goblins hand gripped Nathan's thigh, slowing Nathan.

Nathan hadn't slowed because the goblin tripped him up. No, Nathan was surprised as Pellere's blessing took effect. Instantly, Nathan knew everything about how the goblin moved. Every twitch and pulse of nerves was visible. The new knowledge had shocked him out of the sprint. He felt something run through the goblin, impulses of something rushed to its hand.

Nathan wasn't sure what it was, but it couldn't be good. On instinct, he willed himself to break away from the goblin. He grabbed the arm, desperate for it to release him. At that moment, Peller's blessing flowed out of Nathan and into the goblin. The impulses gathering in the arm released early. Nathan felt heat and something wet as a small pop resounded.

The goblin's arm had been severed, its fire magic going off early at the creature's forearm. It howled in pain, clutching the burned stump. Nathan sprinted away, relieved that he would escape.
