《A Man and His Greatsword》Chapter 9: First Quest

When we arrived at the inn, the first thing we noticed was its liveliness. It was a two-story inn, with food and drink being served downstairs while lodgings were upstairs. Many adventurers were sitting at tables having drinks, eating, or bantering. There was a very friendly atmosphere overall. On the left side was the reception counter while the bar was straight ahead from the entrance. I walked over to the counter and saw the innkeeper who was actually quite a beautiful young lady. I expected a middle-aged woman, but this was fine too.
"How much is a room for two?" I asked in a polite tone.
"That'll be a silver per month." It was a cheap price considering the amount of money adventurers could make. Getting off her seat, the innkeeper lady led us to the room while introducing herself.
"I'm Alice by the way. The man who cooks is my husband, James. I'm sure you'll be staying here for a while." She turned around and handed me the key to the room. "Welcome to the Boisterous Inn."
She flashed a smile then quickly left. I stared at her as she left which caused Jane to jealously poke me in between the gap of my chest armor.
"Ow, that actually hurt. A lot." I winced a little at the pain.
When we entered the room, there were two beds on separate sides of the room, along with a large wardrobe and glowing crystals lighting the room. A window with wooden shutters gave a nice view of the street, where you could observe people passing by. A side door led to a bathroom that had a bathtub.
When I opened the window shutters, I felt a cool breeze fly in. It was starting to get colder outside. I hadn't noticed, but it was already the start of autumn. When I arrived in this world, it was already a month into spring. Now that it was autumn, I realized just how much time I spent in this world. I heard Jane's voice behind me.
"Who's taking a bath first?" I turned around and responded.
"You can go first. I'll wait here." Jane nodded and entered the bathroom. I continued observing the people passing by until Jane was done. She came out dressed in casual wear. I stored my weathered armor before entering the bathroom. Storing the clothes I had on, I pulled a shirt and trousers out of my inventory and placed them in a basket by the entrance. I sat down in the bathtub and relaxed in the warm water.
After soaking for around 15 minutes, I got out and wore my shirt and trousers. I exited the bathroom and saw the room's two beds placed side by side. Jane had moved the beds next to each other while I was in the bath. I'll be honest here, I really don't mind. Jane was a beautiful woman and sleeping next to her would've been a pipe dream for me back on Earth. I laid down on the beds and Jane followed suit. She snuggled next to me and we both fell asleep.
I woke up at dawn and saw Jane's head on my chest, her arm and leg hugging me as if I was a body pillow. I sat up, which made Jane wake up too. We got up off the bed and dressed in our armor before locking the room and heading downstairs. Jane and I sat down at a table where we ordered breakfast.
The inn had quick waiters and a good cook. We were eating just as quick. People gave weird gazes as Jane and I practically inhaled the food that was served. Lazing around for a bit longer, Jane and I left for the Adventurer's Guild.

When we arrived, we headed to the quest board to pick one up. The quests were separated by rank. There were 10 bulletin boards with the rank placed above them on a sign. I looked for any interesting requests on the D rank board, but there was nothing that caught my eye. I assumed we could take quests one rank higher and walked over to the C-rank board.
There, I found a request that I wanted to do. It was a request to take out a group of ogres near a village since they could come down anytime to pillage it. I took the request off the board and headed to the receptionist lady from yesterday. She filed the request and told us that the village was around 4 kilometers southwest.
She told us to collect their tusks as proof for the request. I nodded and thanked her. Jane and I left to get prepared for the trip, as it would probably take a few hours to get there, even at our fastest speed. I asked a nearby adventurer for a store that sold general necessities. He gave some directions to a store that was nearby. I thanked him before heading off, Jane clinging to my arm of course.
When we entered, there was a boy who couldn't have been more than seventeen and his three harem members. He had an above average face. Check. A loli harem member that uses magic. Check. A busty harem member that dual wields and wears revealing outfits. Check. Finally, the generic bubbly childhood friend that plays the healer role. Check.
When the boy turned around, he saw us and immediately saw the contrast between me and Jane. Jane was the more cheerful type of person when not in combat. She always seemed to have a smile on. On the other hand, I had an emotionless face. It was a habit I formed back on Earth. Maybe it seemed more intimidating to him? Anyways, he clearly kept his gaze on Jane. Jane put on a wicked grin realizing this.
"What's the matter, boy?" Jane teased as she leaned over to show her cleavage. She clearly knew he was susceptible to these things. Now that I took a closer look, I realized he was Asian. He had black hair and black eyes, with an average build. Seeing Jane's cleavage caused him to blush madly and he could only stutter one word.
"H-hello..." He mumbled the rest and looked down at his feet to hide his embarrassment. His harem members then stood in front of him with menacing glares. The loli spoke for them.
"What do you want?"
"I was only teasing him a little. Anyways, he's probably like you, Michael." She looked at me and I nodded back at her.
"We most likely came from the same world." I looked at the boy, who raised his head to look at me.
"Were you summoned here from Earth?" He nodded.
"Did you meet a god named Eden?" He nodded again.
"I'd wondered why there was something like a festival happening. Were you summoned as heroes or something?"
"Yeah, we were summoned along with the rest of my class." Something that cliched happened? I scratched my head and introduced myself.
"Well, I'm Michael Adkins, and like you, I came from Earth. Except I was summoned by myself. Eden dropped me in a place that was about 500-something kilometers away from here." I explained. Jane followed up with her own introduction.
"I'm Jane Crimson, I've been traveling with this man here ever since he arrived about five and a half months ago." She clung to my arm with that sentence.

The boy introduced himself as Kudo Taisuke. The healer girl was named Miya Takane. The loli's name was Mary Cadwell, and the busty one was named Fukasawa Ino. When they sized me up, they were shocked to find out I was missing an arm. Fukasawa asked a question about it.
"How do you wield that greatsword with one hand?" She looked at the space where my left arm would've been.
"Some things happened. It doesn't really matter that much." Remembering my original purpose in being here, I walked over to the shopkeeper and bought the general necessities of travel to store in my inventory.
"I'll see you some other time, Kudo." Jane and I left to go do a few things before we set off to go kill the ogres.
-Kudo's POV-
Michael Adkins, a person summoned just like me. I was surprised by his lack of an arm. Just how did he survive until now like that?
"That man is strong. To have lost an arm and lived, he must have fought a strong monster and won. We have to get strong like him if we want to become famous." Fukasawa said with determination.
"I have to get stronger to keep that vixen away from Kudo!" Mary said with a fierce rivalry in her eyes.
"Maybe we should go see how they fight. We might be able to learn something from watching them." Miya's suggestion actually wasn't half bad. We all agreed and started off in the direction those two went.
-Michael's POV-
I felt a few people following us, but I shrugged it off. It was probably Kudo and his harem since I didn't feel any hostility coming from them. I headed to a leatherworking shop as I needed something.
"Hello? Anyone there?" I peeked around inside the shop.
"Yes? I'm here." A man came out wiping his hands.
"I'd like to order a duster. Make it gray with one sleeve. If possible, like for it to be resistant to blunt impacts and cuts."
"Interesting, the price will be one gold." I promptly haggled it down to about seventy silvers which I was satisfied with.
"I'll have to take your measurements for the coat. Come with me." We headed into a changing room where I stripped into my boxers. He used some measuring tape and took the measurements. I equipped my armor again once he was done.
"Come back in a few hours. I'll have the coat done by then." I left with Jane to explore the city. Come to think of it, I haven't used my throwing knives in some time. I pulled out a knife from my bandolier and inspected it before putting it back. Jane and I explored the city for a while before coming back to the leatherworker. I picked up the coat and inspected it.
Grey Leather Duster Defense: 25 Durability: 72/72 A duster made of leather. Special modifications have been made for use by a one-armed person. Extra Effects: +10% blunt resistance, +10% slashing resistance
It was a splendid coat. I wore it over my chest armor and underneath my shoulder pad and gauntlet. It matched with my cloak, which I was happy about. With this, we were done and I decided it was time to head out to kill some ogres.
We headed out from the west gate and followed a road going southwest. I decided to head out on foot instead of riding horses since it would save a little bit of money. The coat actually ate a large amount of my savings. Jane and I sped off as quickly as we could. At our current level, we were able to run for an entire day without stopping. I wasn't sure if Kudo could keep up, but I didn't care that much.
Once night fell, Jane and I had already arrived at the village. We stayed at the village's inn. The owner kindly let us stay free of charge once he knew we were going to take care of the ogre problem. We stayed the night in relative comfort.
When the next day arrived, we asked for directions to where the ogres were sighted and the innkeeper told us they were in the plains a little south of the village. Jane and I set out to the location. When we arrived, we looked around for the ogres and found them sitting around 30 meters away. The group consisted of seven ogres.
They were about 3 meters tall and held clubs in their hands. They only wore a loincloth and lazed around in the morning sun. Jane nocked an arrow and shot it into one of the ogre's eyes. That same ogre was then pierced by an ice spear which went straight through its heart. One down. I charged towards the group while pulling the greatsword off my back.
I left a grey silhouette as I ran and used the momentum of the charge to leap up and stab an ogre in the throat. Kicking off the ogre, I activated my Wind Enchant and lodged my blade into another one's throat. Three of the ogres were down without them realizing it. This fact enraged them and an ogre next to me swung its massive club down at me. I quickly deflected the blow while moving to the side.
Using this opportunity, I cut it's leg off and beheaded it once it fell. The three remaining had just arrived and I dodged a blow aimed at me. Another club entered my vision as I dodged and slammed into my side. I grunted in pain. The coat mitigated a little bit of the impact and the defense value of my armor allowed me to shrug off the hit. It still hurt quite a bit though.
I promptly cut off the closest ogre's hand and Jane followed up with an arrow and ice spear through its vitals. The last two ogres were already dead due to a hail of arrows and ice magic. I wiped the blood off my sword using the surrounding grass. The ogres' blood got all over my armor and I would have to clean it up when we got back to the village.
I pulled out a shortsword and sawed off a tusk each from the corpses and turned around to Jane. I gestured for her to come over so she could collect her arrows. With this, we could go back to the guild and turn these in.
-Kudo's POV-
"Are those two monsters?" Fukasawa exclaimed in shock. Everyone was surprised, the man and woman took out a group of seven ogres by themselves. Our group currently had trouble with only one.
Fukasawa and I were envious of Michael's strength while Miya and Mary were envious of Jane's magic power. Michael took a hit from an ogre like it was nothing and Jane easily took care of an ogre using a few arrows and spells.
Michael even had a spell to increase his attack speed! How crazy was that? On top of that, they had amazing coordination. Jane would keep other enemies off Michael while he fought. It would keep him from taking unnecessary damage. Their offense went smoothly and swiftly. I'd like to learn from them, and so did the others.
-Michael's POV-
I placed the tusks in a bag and stored the bag in my inventory. We returned to the village where I cleaned off the blood on me and we set off to head back to the capital. It was about three hours past noon when we arrived at the gates to the capital. Jane and I showed our status cards to the guards and we were let in.
We headed straight to the Adventurer's Guild where I waited in line at the reception booths. Once it was my turn I withdrew the bag of tusks from my inventory and handed it to the lady. She inspected them and gave us our reward.
The reward for the ogres was 40 silvers for each ogre and we earned a total of 2 gold and 80 silver. I split the money with Jane and we left. This marked the completion of our first quest for the guild.
